How to check for it before buying a used car
- If the X7 has a third row, check with the VIN at a BMW dealer that the backrest campaign has been carried out, and fold down and raise each backrest, checking that it clicks into place and locks.[1]
How to prevent it
- Do not use the third row if the backrest does not clearly click into place when raised; book an appointment with an official dealer.

Other faults of the BMW X7 G07
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalBrakesLoss of brake assistance due to integrated braking system (IBS) faultBMW has recalled cars built since June 2022, the X7 among them, because the integrated braking system can unexpectedly lose its hydraulic assistance: you have to press the pedal harder, stopping distances get longer and the ABS and stability control may fail. In 2021 there was another campaign over the hydraulic unit of that system.
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalBrakesFaulty weld on the hollow shaft of the brake boosterIn January 2025 the Safety Gate published a BMW recall over the brake booster: its hollow shaft is not properly welded and the weld may give way under high brake pressure. It affects cars built between July 2022 and November 2024 (X5, X6 and X7 included), lengthens stopping distances and leaves the ABS and DSC without assistance.
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalElectrical systemOverheating of the starter motor and its relay, with a risk of fireSince 2024 BMW has launched several campaigns that include the X7 over the starter motor: insufficient software protection, electrical contacts that overheat, a relay that corrodes through water ingress and a relay with deposits from contact wear. In the worst case there can be a short circuit and a fire, while driving or shortly after parking.
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalAirbags and safetyKnee airbag gas generator incorrectly inserted in the cushionIn September 2023 the Safety Gate published a BMW campaign because the gas generator of the knee airbag modules is not properly inserted in the cushion: in a crash the airbag may not deploy as it should. It affects some 2,184 X5, X6, X7 and XM cars built between April and June 2023.
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalAirbags and safetyDriver and passenger head airbags badly installedIn July 2019 the Safety Gate published a BMW campaign because the X7's head airbags may be badly installed: if they deploy in a crash, they may not inflate fully. It affects cars built between November 2018 and April 2019.
The faults of its engines are on the BMW X7 G07 page.

- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalAbarth 500Unsuitable front right seat guides: the seat may not lock in place and could come loose (2016 campaign)Safety Gate/RAPEX issued a recall in September 2016 for the Fiat 500 and Abarth 500 built between December 2015 and January 2016: the front right seat guides are unsuitable and the seat might not engage properly and could even come loose. It is corrected at an official workshop using the chassis number (VIN).
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalHonda Civic XIDriver's seat frame breakage in Civics built in 2022Yes: Honda recalled the Civic and Civic Type R built between 21 July and 21 October 2022 (campaign 6YC) because the driver's seat frame can break under sustained stress and, in a crash, the driver's restraint system might not work. The sources consulted do not describe the repair.
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalNissan Juke IIRecall over the rear seat backrest latchYes: Nissan recalled about 56,000 Jukes across Europe (about 9,000 in France) built between 18 September 2019 and 28 August 2020, because the rear seat backrest might not lock properly after being folded down.Repair: €0
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalRenault Master IIDefective welds on the front seat mountingYes: Master IIs built between early 2008 and May 2009 were recalled because some welds on the mounting of the single front seat did not conform and, in extreme braking or a crash, the seat could come away from the floor. The mounting was reinforced with extra welding.
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalTesla Model YRecall for incomplete welds in the seat structure (built 2022-2024)Tesla recalled Model Y cars built between June 2022 and March 2024 (bulletin SB-24-13-003) because the structure of some seats could have incomplete welds, which reduces their strength in an accident.
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalToyota Urban CruiserBreakage of the front seat rail locking springThe spring that locks the fore-and-aft adjustment rail of the driver's and passenger's seat can break after repeated use and leave the seat unsecured. Toyota fixed it with a campaign (Safety Gate alert A12/0616/14) that replaces the spring on Urban Cruisers built between 2008 and 2010.
