Frequently asked questions about engines

Which engines give the most trouble?

According to our risk index (0 to 100), which weighs the severity and frequency of documented faults, the engines with the most problems are the 1.2 PureTech (96), the OM651 (89), the 2.0 Ingenium diésel (87), the BMW N47 (87) and the BMW N57 (87).

Least reliable engines

Which is more reliable, a diesel or a petrol engine?

Both fuels have reliable engines and problematic ones. On our risk index (0 to 100), of the 67 diesel engines analysed the lowest is the 2.2 MultiJet / BlueHDi (Stellantis) (14) and the highest the OM651 (89); of the 91 petrol engines, the 1.0 and 1.4 Boosterjet (6) and the 1.2 PureTech (96).

What does the engine warning light mean?

The engine warning light, the yellow or orange outline of an engine, comes on when the control unit detects a mechanical or electronic fault in the engine or the emissions system, but it does not say which one by itself. If it stays steady and the car drives normally, you can carry on with caution to a garage to have the codes read; if it flashes, turns red or the car loses power, the sensible thing is to stop. With it on, the car will also fail the ITV (the Spanish roadworthiness inspection, equivalent to the MOT).

Which cars share the same engine?

Many engines are fitted to cars from several brands, and their faults repeat across all of them: the 1.2 PureTech is fitted to Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Opel, Fiat, Jeep, Alfa Romeo, Lancia and Toyota cars; the 1.5 dCi is fitted to Renault, Dacia, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz, Infiniti and Suzuki cars; the 1.3 Multijet is fitted to Fiat, Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Opel, Suzuki and Ford cars. Each engine's page lists the models that use it.

How do I know which engine my car has?

Search for your car by make, model and year: we show you the engines fitted to each version and the faults of each one. If you already know the engine code (for example BKD, K9K or EB2), you can search for it directly.
