Steering rack and steering column

The rack converts the turning of the steering wheel into movement of the wheels, and the column connects the steering wheel to it. Play, tight spots, noises, or bolts and parts outside specification are the most common documented faults; several have been corrected with recalls.

What to do

Play in the steering wheel, dull clunks when turning at a standstill or imprecise steering deserve an early check: these are safety parts. Use the VIN to check whether your car has an outstanding steering campaign.
