Nissan Note I (2006–2012)Airbags and safetyAirbags

Risk of airbag rupture or abnormal deployment in the Nissan Note I

Two campaigns (2016 and 2017) cover Note I units in which the driver's airbag could rupture on deployment or the passenger airbag deploy abnormally; between them, the production batches covered span practically the whole production of this generation.[1]

Why this rating?

Critical severity: It can destroy the engine or gearbox, or affects safety.

Frequency occasional: Between them, the two campaigns cover almost the whole production window of the Note I (August 2005 to December 2011, and August 2005 to July 2013), which might suggest a systemic problem; but they are preventive campaigns on different airbags, the driver's and the passenger's, not the same part in a second campaign, and we have found no testimonies or statistics of real in-service failures, so we treat them as occasional and not as very frequent, following this guide's principle of not equating the size of a campaign with the real frequency of the fault.[1]

Symptoms

Why it happens

According to the notifications consulted, the driver's airbag of one production batch could rupture on deployment, and the passenger airbag, in another batch, could deploy abnormally; the campaign database does not detail the exact component (inflator, gas generator, etc.) responsible for each defect.[1]

If it is not repaired: An airbag that ruptures on deployment can throw fragments towards the occupant instead of protecting them; an abnormal deployment may not provide the intended protection in a crash.[1]

Affected years and cars

The driver's airbag campaign covers vehicles built between 30 August 2005 and 31 December 2011; the passenger airbag one, between 3 August 2005 and 19 July 2013. We limit the range to the Note I production years recorded in content/cars.json (2006-2012); we have not been able to independently confirm the 2005 (pre-production) and 2013 (possible overlap with the Note II/E12) production extremes.[1]

Includes: Replacement of the affected airbag module (driver's or passenger's) at the official network, within the campaign.[1]

As these are safety campaigns, the check is free at the official network for vehicles in the affected batches; there is no published market rate for this replacement outside a campaign.

Prices in Spain, including VAT. A workshop hour costs on average €38–66 at independent garages and €77–134 at dealerships in Spain, depending on the region and the brand. How we calculate costs

How to check for it before buying a used car

  • Check with the VIN at an official Nissan workshop whether the car falls under either of the two airbag campaigns and whether the corresponding module has already been replaced.[1]

How to prevent it

  • It is not a fault the owner can prevent; if your car falls in either of the two batches, book an appointment with the official service for the airbag replacement.

Frequently asked questions

Which Nissan Notes are affected by the airbag campaigns?

Practically the whole Note I production: the driver's airbag campaign covers cars built between August 2005 and December 2011, and the passenger one between August 2005 and July 2013.[1]

Is it the same problem as the Takata campaigns that affected other manufacturers?

We have not been able to confirm it: the campaign database consulted does not identify the airbag manufacturer, so we do not claim that it is the same component as other campaigns known by that name.[1]

How do I know whether my Note already has the airbag checked?

By checking the VIN at an official Nissan workshop, which can confirm whether the car fell under either of the two campaigns and whether the module has already been replaced.[1]

What can you do now?

We will put you in touch with a partner only if you authorise it in the form.
