Volkswagen ID.4 (2021–today)Electronics and infotainmentScreen and infotainment system
Immature software: the screen freezes, restarts or loses the phone in the Volkswagen ID.4
It is a known problem, above all in the first deliveries: the Volkswagen ID.4's infotainment system can be slow, restart on its own, lose its connection with the phone or leave functions (navigation, climate control, charging) briefly inaccessible. The manufacturer has been correcting it through successive software updates.[1][2]
Why this rating?
Low severity: A nuisance or wear. It does not immobilise the car or damage other parts.
Frequency common: It is a known and widespread problem on units with the first software versions, independently documented in press tests and in workshops. The same type of software fault, with equivalent causes and fixes, is also documented on the ID.3, with which the ID.4 shares its platform and infotainment system.[1][2]
Symptoms
- The central screen is slow, goes black, restarts on its own or loses the connection with the phone (Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay or Android Auto).[1][2]Screen failure: other faults that cause it · Monitor
- Warnings may appear, or functions that depend on the screen, such as climate control or charging status, may become temporarily inaccessible.[1][2]Electronic warnings: other faults that cause it · Monitor
Why it happens
According to the sources consulted, the infotainment system software was not fully mature at the model's launch, which causes freezes, restarts and occasional loss of connection.[1][2]
If it is not repaired: It is not a mechanical fault and does not prevent you from driving the car, but it is a recurring nuisance: it forces you to restart the system and can leave you without navigation, without a reversing camera or without climate control for a few seconds.[1][2]
Affected years and cars
Better documented on units with the first software versions (around the launch); the manufacturer has released successive updates that correct a good part of these faults, although the sources do not give an exact cut-off year.[1][2]
