Ford Mondeo IV (2007–2014)Climate controlAir conditioningWater leaks
Water leaking in through the air conditioning drain in the Ford Mondeo IV
Why this rating?
Low severity: A nuisance or wear. It does not immobilise the car or damage other parts.
Frequency occasional: fiches-auto.fr records 6 climate control cases out of 286 owner reports, and gebrauchtwagenberater.de independently confirms that water can get into the cabin on older models through blocked condensate drains. With two sources agreeing but low figures, we classify it as occasional.[1][2]
Symptoms
- Water gets into the cabin, especially around the footwell, and the carpets or upholstery end up damp.[1][2]Water leak: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
Why it happens
The condensate drain from the air conditioning evaporator becomes blocked with dirt; the water that should drain outside then flows back into the cabin and soaks the trim.[1][2]
If it is not repaired: Persistent damp can eventually cause electrical faults from poor contacts, bad smells and localised corrosion if it is not dealt with.[1]
Affected years and cars
gebrauchtwagenberater.de places it mainly on "older models" within the generation, without specifying exact years.[2]

How much it costs to repair
Includes: Cleaning or unblocking the air conditioning condensate drain pipe.[1]
We have not found a published quote in Spain for this repair, which is usually simple and cheap compared with others in this file.
Prices in Spain, including VAT. A workshop hour costs on average €38–66 at independent garages and €77–134 at dealerships in Spain, depending on the region and the brand. How we calculate costs
How to check for it before buying a used car
- Lift the front floor mats and check that the carpet is dry, with no damp patches and no musty smell.[1]
How to prevent it
- Ask for the air conditioning condensate drain to be checked and cleaned at every service, especially if the car is a few years old.
Recalls, campaigns and claims
As of 27 September 2026, we have no record of recalls, campaigns or extended manufacturer warranties for this fault. Check with an official dealer using the chassis (VIN) number: they will tell you whether the car has any outstanding campaign.

Frequently asked questions
Why does water get into the cabin of the Mondeo IV?
Because the pipe that drains the condensed water from the air conditioning becomes blocked with dirt and the water flows back into the cabin instead of draining outside.[1][2]
Is it a serious fault?
Not in itself, but if the damp is neglected it can end up damaging electrical connectors under the floor mats.[1]
Is it expensive to fix?
It usually is not: normally it is enough to clean or unblock the drain pipe, although no source publishes a specific price for Spain.[1]

- Medium severityFrequency: CommonGearbox and clutchDual-mass flywheel and clutch wear (TDCi diesel)According to fiches-auto.fr, the dual-mass flywheel and clutch are "a major weak point" of TDCi versions of the Mondeo IV: with use they lose precision, cause vibrations and rattling, and wear out the clutch disc sooner than normal.
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalSteeringPower steering faults (pump, rack and hoses)The Mondeo IV's power steering can fail because of the pump, the rack, the hoses or the reservoir: according to fiches-auto.fr, a pump working with metal filings from a worn rack ends up making noise and losing effectiveness; the German TÜV inspection report also lists the steering among the problem areas.
- High severityFrequency: RareBrakesRecall over the brake servo (valve that sticks in the cold)According to the KBA, on Mondeo IV cars built between 1 November 2008 and 12 March 2009, the non-return valve in the vacuum pump can stick at low outside temperatures, leaving the brake servo with less vacuum than it needs and reducing braking assistance.
- Medium severityFrequency: RareHeadlights and lightsSoftware recall over headlights and indicators (2010 cars)According to the KBA, a software error in one of the vehicle's modules can cause a variety of faults in the on-board electronics of Mondeo IV cars built in 2010: the headlights or indicators can switch on for no reason, or the headlights can switch themselves off.
The faults of its engines are on the Ford Mondeo IV page.

- Critical severityFrequency: CommonPeugeot RifterAir conditioning compressor stator wiring faultTwo successive recalls, in 2023 and 2024, cover Rifters built between 2021 and 2024 in which the air conditioning compressor stator wiring can develop a current fault and even switch the engine off while driving; owner reports also document genuine compressor failures.
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalKia Sorento IIIOverheating of the climate control's auxiliary electric heater (PTC) connector on diesel SorentosYes: Kia recalled diesel Sorentos built between May 2014 and February 2020 (campaign 221026) because the connector of the auxiliary electric heater (PTC) can become damaged and overheat, with a risk of fire. The connector is inspected and, if damaged, the heater is replaced along with its wiring.
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalPorsche Panamera IShort circuit in the air conditioning fan control unitYes: the 2019 recall AKA7 covers Panamera cars built between July 2009 and September 2016 because the air conditioning fan control unit can short circuit, with a risk of fire. It is inspected and, if necessary, replaced; in the UK it affected 4,506 cars.
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalPorsche Panamera IMoisture in the air conditioning auxiliary pump control unitYes: the 2023 recall APA1 covers Panamera cars built between July 2015 and November 2021 (the last units of the 970 series and the following generation) because moisture can damage the air conditioning auxiliary pump control unit and cause a short circuit with a risk of fire. The pump is replaced with a better-sealed one.
