Renault Modus (2004–2012)Electrical systemWindow regulators and central locking
Electric window failure in the Renault Modus
On the Renault Modus, the motor, cables or guides of the electric windows can fail and leave the glass slow, stuck or dropping on its own; it is the most-cited non-engine fault in owner reports for this car.[1]
Why this rating?
Low severity: A nuisance or wear. It does not immobilise the car or damage other parts.
Frequency common: fiches-auto.fr records 81 opinions on the windows among 342 total reports on the Modus (around 24%), the highest proportion of all the faults recorded for this car, which makes it a known and widespread problem rather than an isolated case.[1]
Symptoms
- A door window goes up or down very slowly, gets stuck halfway or drops on its own all the way down.[1]Window/lock failure: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
Why it happens
According to fiches-auto.fr, the electric motors and the window guides are undersized for daily use; the wiring and the switches also tire with the years, which makes the glass move slowly, stick or lose its position.[1]
If it is not repaired: A window that stays down exposes the interior to rain and lets in water and damp, as well as the risk of theft if it does not close properly.[1]
Affected years and cars
fiches-auto.fr describes the fault for the Modus production as a whole (2004-2012), without narrowing it to a specific production batch.[1]

How much it costs to repair
Includes: Diagnosis of the window regulator and replacement of the electric motor, the cable or the whole mechanism assembly, depending on the point of failure.[1]
We have not found a published market price in Spain for this repair on the Modus.
Prices in Spain, including VAT. A workshop hour costs on average €38–66 at independent garages and €77–134 at dealerships in Spain, depending on the region and the brand. How we calculate costs
How to check for it before buying a used car
- Raise and lower all four windows several times in a row, also with the engine running, and check that none stops halfway or makes a different noise from the rest.

How to prevent it
- Avoid forcing the switch if you notice the window running slower than usual: the sooner the mechanism is checked, the less risk there is of it jamming completely.

Other faults of the Renault Modus
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalSteeringNoise, play or loss of assistance in the steeringThe rack and column of the Modus's electric power steering can produce noise or play, and in some cases lose assistance; Renault also recalled a batch of cars in 2005 over a problem in the steering column assembly.
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalGearbox and clutchPremature clutch wear and noise in the manual gearboxOn the Modus, especially on diesel versions used in town, the clutch can slip, judder or wear out sooner than expected; the manual gearbox can also become noisier or find it hard to engage a gear as the mileage builds up.
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalSuspensionUneven tyre wear caused by the rear axle geometryOn the Modus, the tyres - especially the rear ones - can wear quickly or unevenly; fiches-auto.fr links this to the rear axle geometry and to wear of the bushes and shock absorbers.
- Medium severityFrequency: RareBodywork and interiorThe rear seat may jam (2008-2009 production)A 2010 campaign covers Modus cars built between January 2008 and October 2009 in which the folding rear bench may jam and not lock back correctly into position.

The same problem in other cars
- High severityFrequency: CommonRenault Laguna IIMultiplex electrical system and hands-free card faultsThe Laguna II had a reputation problem because of faults in its multiplexed electrical network: the hands-free card, the card reader and the ABS, ESP and handbrake warning lights came on erratically, especially in the early years of production (2001-2003).
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalHonda CR-V IIMaster window switch with fire risk from liquid ingressYes: Honda has recalled CR-Vs built between November 2001 and October 2006 twice (in 2012 and 2020-2021) because the master window switch can collect liquid, overheat and, in the worst case, cause a fire.
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalToyota Corolla XOverheating of the front electric window switch (fire risk)Toyota has carried out two recalls over the Corolla's window switch: in 2012, for a poor lubricant that left carbon deposits and could cause a fire (4,032 Corollas in Spain, built between September 2006 and December 2008), and in 2015, for a possible short circuit in the driver's master switch (2005-2010 range).
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalToyota Urban CruiserOverheating of the driver's master window switchToyota recalled Urban Cruisers in the 2005-2010 production range because the driver's master window switch can short-circuit and overheat, with a risk of fire. It is a preventive campaign: the switch is inspected, given a coating and replaced if it shows signs of malfunction.
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonBMW Serie 3 E46Central locking and immobiliser failure due to worn relaysThe central locking can become intermittent or stop responding to the remote, and the immobiliser can fail sporadically when starting; gebrauchtwagenberater.de attributes both faults to wear in the relays of the control modules, and fiches-auto.fr records numerous testimonies of unreliable locking.
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonRenault Clio IIFailures of the electric windows and central lockingOn the Clio II the cables, guides and motors of the electric windows wear out and damp corrodes the connectors, which can also affect the central locking and the rear lights through faulty earths.
