Electric windows or central locking not responding: causes and the faults that trigger it

A window that won't go up or down is usually down to a fuse, the switch or its wiring, or the window motor; central locking that doesn't respond, to the fob battery, a fuse, a door motor, the wiring or the control unit. The sources recommend starting with the cheapest things: battery, fuses and switch contacts.^[1][2]

What it means

The electric windows stop going up or down, or the central locking does not lock or unlock the doors when you use the key, the remote or the interior button. It is usually caused by a fault in the body control module (BCM) or its wiring.

Most common causes

From most to least likely according to the sources. Under each cause, the part and the related OBD codes.

1. Flat key fob battery
Common cause
RACE points to a dead battery as the simplest reason the locking doesn't respond to the fob: no sound is heard or the fob's indicator light doesn't come on. If the key works when put in the lock, the problem is the fob.^[2][3]

2. Blown fuse
Common cause
Mapfre makes the blown fuse the first check in both cases, windows and locking, and reminds readers to replace it with one of the same amperage.^[1][4]

3. Dirty or faulty window switch
Common cause
Autofácil maintains that in most cases the culprit is not the motor but the control switch, whose micro-contacts tend to be dirty and can be cleaned; at an official dealer they will probably replace the whole part. Mapfre also asks for the switch voltage and its wires to be checked.^[1][5]

4. Broken window motor or mechanism
Possible cause
Mapfre, citing Motor Mundial, says the most common cause is that the motor isn't working or a part has broken, and asks you to check the voltage it receives, the gears and that nothing is blocking the glass.^[1]

5. Door locking motor or its wiring
Possible cause
RACE explains that if all the doors open except one, the motor that moves the latch may have failed, with a repair of up to €200 in Spain, or its electrical wiring may be damaged. Mapfre adds that a damaged cable prevents the locking from acting on all the doors equally.^[2][4]

6. Receiver, jammers or decoded key
Possible cause
According to RACE, the fault may lie in the signal receiver or the fob, in frequency jammers in nearby buildings or in a spare key that has been decoded and must be reprogrammed at an official garage.^[2][3]

7. Lack of lubrication in winter
Uncommon
RACE says the lubricant in the mechanism can thicken in the cold to the point of stopping the locking working properly, and that it may work again in summer.^[2]

RACE includes a problem with the comfort locking control unit among the causes, which is resolved with a diagnosis at a garage.^[3]

Depending on what you notice

The window won't go up or down

Mapfre suggests checking the fuses first with the help of the manual; if they are fine, checking the voltage at the switch and its wires and, lastly, the motor, gears and possible obstructions. Autofácil reminds readers to clean the switch contacts.^[1][5]

The locking fails on just one door

RACE attributes it to the motor that moves that door's latch or to its electrical wiring, with a repair that can cost up to €200 in Spain.^[2]

The key fob won't unlock or lock the car

RACE suggests ruling out the battery, trying the key in the lock, bearing in mind nearby frequency jammers and, in keyless cars, using the contact recognition zone.^[2]

It only fails when it is cold

RACE explains that the lubricant can become thick in the cold and that the locking can stop working in winter and work again in summer.^[2]

When locking, you hear a click and another door or the boot stays open

Mapfre links this to a damaged cable or fuse after a recent repair, or to flat fob batteries.^[4]

The locking doesn't work from the inside

RACE explains that the interior comfort locking, with a button or automatic above a certain speed, can also fail, and that in an accident the locking must unlock itself when the airbags deploy.^[2]

What to check first

Change the fob battery and try the key in the lock to separate a fob fault from a door fault.^[2][3]
Find the window and central locking fuses in the manual and replace any blown ones with others of the same rating.^[1][4]
Try each door's button and the manual lock separately to find out whether a single component is failing or the whole system.^[2]
With the door panel removed, check the voltage at the switch and motor, or clean the switch contacts if you know how; otherwise, leave it to the garage.^[1][5]
As a last resort, RACE and Mapfre mention resetting the locking: according to RACE, by disconnecting the battery for 15 to 20 minutes, although in some cars you will need to reconfigure settings. Check the manual first.^[3][4]

Can I keep driving?

None of the sources treats the fault as something that stops you driving, but they do treat it as a matter of security and convenience: a window that won't close leaves the car open and locking that doesn't lock can leave it unprotected. Mapfre does not advise the user to take the door apart unless the problem is a fuse, because the electrical system is sensitive. If the locking fails from the inside, RACE reminds readers that it unlocks itself if the airbags deploy.^[1][2]

Why won't my car window go up?

Mapfre cites a blown fuse, the wiring or the switch and, as the most common cause, the motor or one of its parts. Autofácil adds that it is often the switch, with dirty contacts.^[1][5]

How much does it cost to fix central locking?

RACE puts the repair of a door motor at up to €200 in Spain. We have not found a reliable open figure for the complete window mechanism or for the control unit.^[2]

How do you reset central locking?

RACE presents it as a last resort, after ruling out the battery, jammers, fuses and wiring: disconnecting the battery for 15 to 20 minutes. Mapfre says each model has its own method and refers to the manual.^[3][4]

Could there be frequency jammers nearby?

Yes. RACE explains that official buildings can have radio frequency jammers that block the fob in certain areas, in which case you have to use the physical key.^[2]

Does insurance cover a central locking fault?

Mapfre points out that mechanical warranties usually cover the engine, transmission and differential, and often exclude items such as central locking, so it is worth reading the contract.^[4]
