Which Hyundai-Kia E-GMP (Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, EV6) versions should you buy?
Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.
- With caution
Ioniq 5 and EV6 58 kWh, rear-wheel drive, 170 hp (2021-2024)
2021–2024 · 170 hp
No own faults documented, but it falls within the ICCU campaigns (production from 2021 to early 2024): check that they have been carried out.[1][7]
- With caution
Ioniq 5 and EV6 72.6 kWh and 77.4 kWh, rear-wheel drive, 218-229 hp (2021-2024)
2021–2024 · 218–229 hp
It is the version with the most ICCU and AC charging testimonies in the listings; the ICCU campaign covers production up to February 2024, so check it by chassis number.[1][3][8]
- With caution
Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6 and EV6 77.4 kWh, all-wheel drive, 306-325 hp (2021-2024)
2021–2024 · 235–325 hp
Same ICCU and same campaigns as the rear-wheel-drive versions; the testimonies are few but repeat the electrical alert warnings.[1][9]
- With caution
Ioniq 6 53 kWh, rear-wheel drive, 151 hp (2023-present)
since 2023 · 151 hp
No own data on this version; it shares the platform's ICCU, which has a campaign until April 2024 on the Ioniq 6.[1][6]
- Buy
Ioniq 5 and EV6 with 84 kWh battery, facelift (2024-present)
since 2024 · 228–325 hp
The ICCU campaigns close with production from February to April 2024, and no documented faults have been found in these units, although they are few and recent.[1][10]
Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.
Known faults of the Hyundai-Kia E-GMP (Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, EV6)
Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).
- 1High severityFrequency: CommonPower electronicsFaulty ICCU: 12 V battery drains, charging fails and power is lostThe ICCU, which combines the on-board charger and the converter that powers the 12 V system, can fail on the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6 and EV6: it cuts AC charging, drains the 12 V battery and, in the worst case, the car loses power and stops. Hyundai and Kia have recalled units built from 2021 to 2024.Repair: €2,000–€5,000
- 2High severityFrequency: RareTraction batteryFaulty traction battery module or cellsOn some Ioniq 5 and EV6 the battery management system detects a faulty module or cell block, limits power or immobilises the car, and the repair requires replacing the module. These are isolated testimonies from one listing, with no campaign or study behind them.
- 3High severityFrequency: RareElectric motor and reduction gearWhine from the reduction gear or electric motor and bearing wearSome Ioniq 5 and EV6 owners describe a whine or whistle from the reduction gear that increases with speed and, in one EV6 case, replacement of the motor or reduction gear at 19,000 km. It is a rare problem, based only on listing testimonies.
- 4Medium severityFrequency: RareChargingIoniq 6 charging port cover and panel: opens by itself or may come offOn the Ioniq 6 the charging port cover can open by itself with the car parked, or close badly, and a 2026 recall covers the risk of the outer panel coming off while driving. The evidence is a single listing with few testimonies.

What the Hyundai-Kia E-GMP (Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, EV6) is
E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform) is the Hyundai-Kia group's electric platform. It debuted with the Ioniq 5 (2021) and Kia EV6 (2021), followed by the Ioniq 6 (2022). It uses a permanent-magnet synchronous motor on the rear axle and, on all-wheel-drive versions, another at the front.[4][5][6]
Traction batteries range from 53 kWh (Ioniq 6) to 84 kWh (2024 facelift of the Ioniq 5 and EV6). Outputs range from 170 hp in rear-wheel drive to 325 hp in all-wheel drive, and the EV6 GT reaches 585 hp.[4][5][6]
A central component is the ICCU, which combines the AC on-board charger and the converter that replaces the alternator. It is where the platform's recalls in Europe are concentrated.[1][7]
