Volkswagen 1.4 16v and 1.6 MPI/FSI (EA111)Engine sensorsLambda sensor
Faulty lambda sensors on the 1.6 FSI on the 1.4 16v and 1.6 MPI/FSI
Why this rating?
Low severity: A nuisance or wear. It does not immobilise the car or damage other parts.
Frequency occasional: Gebrauchtwagenberater.de notes that the 1.6 FSI 'can have problems' with faulty sensors, and Fiches-auto.fr repeats this for the Golf V and Touran with the same engine. These are two independent publications, but they give no figures for affected units: occasional.[1][2][3]
Symptoms
- Engine warning light on; the source links the sensor to this warning together with the catalytic converter.[3]Engine warning light: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
- Rough idle when the sensor sends an inconsistent signal, according to Fiches-auto.fr.[2]
Why it happens
Fiches-auto.fr describes how an inconsistent lambda sensor prevents proper control of the mixture richness and upsets the idle.[2]
On the Touran, the same source links the faulty sensor, or a dirty catalytic converter, to the engine warning light and poorer acceleration.[3]
If it is not repaired: Fiches-auto.fr associates it with rough idle, the engine warning light and poorer acceleration; it does not document any mechanical damage to the engine.[2][3]
Affected cars and years
Only the 1.6 FSI direct-injection version; the sources cite it on the Golf V (2003-2008) and the Touran I (2003-2010).[1][2][3]

How much it costs to repair
Includes: Lambda sensor (oxygen sensor) and replacement labour.[1]
No prices are published in the sources consulted.
Prices in Spain, including VAT. A workshop hour costs on average €38–66 at independent garages and €77–134 at dealerships in Spain, depending on the region and the brand. How we calculate costs
How to check for it before buying a used car
- Ask for the invoice for the last sensor replacement and check that there are no sensor codes in the fault memory.

How to prevent it
- Have the engine warning light diagnosed as soon as it appears, to tell the sensor, coils and catalytic converter apart.[3]
Recalls, campaigns and claims
As of 30 October 2026, we have no record of recalls, campaigns or extended manufacturer warranties for this fault. Check with an official dealer using the chassis (VIN) number: they will tell you whether the car has any outstanding campaign.
What owners say
Frequently asked questions
Which Golf V engines have the most lambda sensor faults?
Gebrauchtwagenberater.de points to the 1.6 FSI within the Golf V petrol range, and Fiches-auto.fr cites the sensor on the 1.6 FSI in the Golf V and Touran. Other versions are not flagged in those sources.[1][2][3]
Is it a serious fault?
The sources do not link it to mechanical damage: it shows up as the engine warning light, rough idle and poorer acceleration, and it is resolved by diagnosing and replacing the sensor.[3]

Other 1.4 16v and 1.6 MPI/FSI faults
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalTimingTiming belt and water pumpThe 1.4 16v and the 1.6 MPI (BSE/BSF) drive the valvetrain with a toothed timing belt, and in many of these engines the water pump is driven by that same belt. If the pump seizes, it can drag the belt until it jumps a tooth or snaps, with the risk of the valves hitting the pistons.Repair (garage): €400–€700
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonIgnitionIgnition coil failureIgnition coils are the fault that recurs most in owner reports for this engine, across all its versions. A weak coil causes misfires, jerking and the engine warning light; replacing it is a minor repair compared with the engine's other faults.
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonIntakeCarbon build-up on the intake valves (1.6 FSI only)The 1.6 FSI injects petrol directly into the combustion chamber, so it no longer washes the intake valves as indirect injection does. Over the miles, carbon builds up on them, causing loss of power and a rough idle; it does not affect the 1.4 16v or the 1.6 MPI.
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalLubricationOil consumption, especially on the older 1.4 16vSome of the older 1.4 16v engines (pre-2008) use more oil between changes than you would expect. Volkswagen acknowledged a crankcase ventilation fault that froze up in cold weather and launched a service action in January 2003; we have not found the same pattern in the later BUD/CGGA codes.
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalCoolingNeglected thermostat and cooling systemA failing thermostat or water pump can make the engine slow to warm up or, worse, overheat. Fiches-auto.fr documents a case of a replaced water pump on this engine and warns that a neglected cooling system can end up damaging the head gasket.
More faults with the engine sensors on other engines and cars
- High severityFrequency: Occasional2.0 DTI and 2.2 DTIVP44 injection pump and air mass meter failureGerman Wikipedia documents recurring failures of the Bosch VP44 injection pump and the air mass meter in the early years of this engine. An owner testimony for this engine describes the pump being replaced at 192,500 km, at a cost the owner calls «prohibitive».
- Medium severityFrequency: Common2.0 TDIClogged particulate filter or faulty pressure sensorThe 2.0 TDI's particulate filter clogs if the car mostly makes short journeys, because it never gets to regenerate; sometimes the fault is just the differential pressure sensor. Cleaning it costs around €200 and replacing it, €800 to €3,000.Repair (garage): €800–€3,000
- Medium severityFrequency: Common1.4 and 1.6 8vCrankshaft position sensor failure (TDC sensor)The crankshaft position sensor (capteur PMH, or TDC sensor) appears repeatedly in the reliability sources for the Clio II, the Kangoo I and the Dacia Logan I with this engine, with hard cold starting or stalling as the main symptoms. It is a cheap part, but the failure can leave you stranded.
- Medium severityFrequency: Common1.4 and 1.6 16vCrankshaft position sensor failureThe crankshaft position sensor (capteur PMH) appears repeatedly in the reliability sources for almost every generation with this engine, with hard cold starting, stalling or the car cutting out unexpectedly. It is a cheap part, but the failure can leave you stranded.
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalBMW B57AdBlue/SCR system fault (NOx sensors, heater and pump)A specialist garage considers the B57's AdBlue/SCR system the fault that most often leaves cars immobilised: a NOx sensor, the quality sensor, the heater or the pump usually fails, and topping up the tank rarely stops the countdown of remaining starts.
- Medium severityFrequency: Occasional1.2 8v FireSensor failures: lambda sensor and crankshaft position sensor (TDC)The 1.2 8v Fire can suffer sensor faults: the lambda sensor (warning light, rough running) and, in the Fiat Punto, the crankshaft position sensor (TDC sensor), linked to misfires. These are minority issues, but they recur across several models with this engine.
