BMW Serie 3 E90 problems (2005–2012)

All 7 engines and 1 gearbox of the BMW Serie 3 E90 that we have documented have high or critical severity faults: the BMW N47, the BMW N57, the BMW M47, the BMW M57, the BMW N43/N46, the BMW N52 / N53, the BMW N54/N55 and the ZF 6HP gearbox. None has a «Buy» verdict; the safest option is the ZF 6HP gearbox, with a «With caution» verdict.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

Outside the engine: Outside the engine, the 3 Series E90 is included in BMW's successive campaigns over the Takata driver's airbag gas generators and over the heater fan connector (fire risk). The press and owner reports also document frequent failures of the steering rack and power steering pump, and wear of the shock absorbers and bushes with mileage.[7][8][9]

Faults that affect the Serie 3 E90

  1. Critical severityFrequency: Very frequentTimingRear timing chain stretch and breakageYes: the N47 has its timing chain at the rear of the engine, next to the gearbox, and on a very high proportion of units, especially those built between 2007 and 2009, it stretches or breaks prematurely because of an inadequate tensioner, with a risk of destroying the engine.Repair (garage): €1,590–€3,000Appears at around 50,000 km
  2. Critical severityFrequency: CommonIntakeBroken intake manifold swirl flapsYes: the N47's intake manifold has plastic swirl flaps that, with diesel soot and the passing years, can crack, come loose and be sucked into the cylinder, with a risk of seriously damaging the piston, cylinder head and valves.
  3. High severityFrequency: CommonTurboTurbo and wastegate valve failureThe N47's turbo does not usually fail from general wear, but because of failure of the wastegate valve, which regulates boost and can seize or lose adjustment, sending fuel consumption soaring; oil leaks from the turbo itself are also common.Repair (garage): €900–€1,800
  4. Medium severityFrequency: CommonEmissions controlClogged or seized EGR valveYes, as on most diesels of its generation: the N47's EGR valve seizes or clogs with carbon, especially on cars used in town, causing an unstable idle, jerking and loss of power; it is not usually a serious fault if it is cleaned or replaced in time.Repair (garage): €400–€1,500
  5. Medium severityFrequency: CommonClutchDual-mass flywheel wear (manual gearbox versions)Yes: on manual-gearbox BMW N47s, the dual-mass flywheel can wear, especially after a lot of town mileage or driving in high gears at low revs; the typical symptoms are vibrations, a metallic rattle at idle and jerking when pulling away.Appears at around 150,000 km

Faults that affect the Serie 3 E90

Only those that affect the versions and years that this car used. The BMW N57 has 4 documented faults in total.

  1. Critical severityFrequency: Very frequentEmissions controlEGR cooler leaks with risk of engine fireYes: like the N47 and B47, the N57 is covered by BMW's service campaign for EGR cooler leaks, which can mix coolant with soot and oil to combustion temperatures. BMW checks free of charge the 6-cylinder engines built between July 2012 and June 2015 because of the fire risk.
  2. Critical severityFrequency: CommonTimingRear timing chain wearThe N57 inherits from the N47 the timing chain at the rear of the block, next to the gearbox, which complicates any repair. Unlike the N47, there is no documented campaign or wave of mass claims, and cases of serious wear appear mainly above 200,000 km.
  3. Medium severityFrequency: CommonOtherCrankshaft pulley vibration damper wearThe N57's crankshaft vibration damper (pulley) wears with use and, according to a technical guide to the engine, usually needs replacing between 80,000 and 120,000 km, giving warning with abnormal noises before failing completely.Appears at around 80,000 km

    With caution

It carries the same swirl flap risk as the previous revision until BMW strengthened the design in 2006; check whether the manifold has already been inspected or reinforced.[18]

Faults that affect the Serie 3 E90

  1. Critical severityFrequency: Very frequentIntakeIntake swirl flap breakage (swirl flaps)Yes: the common rail versions of the M47 (built since 2001) have flaps in the intake manifold that, with diesel soot and heat cycles, can break and be sucked into the cylinder, with a risk of serious damage to the piston, cylinder head and valves.
  2. High severityFrequency: CommonTurboLoss of power and turbo faultsThe M47's turbo does not usually fail suddenly, but it loses power gradually as carbon builds up in the variable geometry; the 150 hp variant built between September 2001 and November 2003 also accounts for turbo faults documented by specialist workshops.
  3. Medium severityFrequency: CommonInjectionBlocked and seized injectorsOver the miles, carbon builds up around the M47's injector seats and can seize them; a German used-car guide adds that the high-pressure pump on the first common rail units (before the first facelift) is relatively prone to failure.
  4. Medium severityFrequency: CommonClutchDual-mass flywheel wear (manual gearbox versions)On BMWs with the M47 engine and a manual gearbox, the dual-mass flywheel can wear with mileage, especially with a lot of urban use or long spells in high gears at low revs; typical symptoms are vibrations, a metallic rattle at idle and jerking when pulling away.Appears at around 150,000 km
  5. Critical severityFrequency: RareOtherOil leak from the brake vacuum pumpA BMW specialist workshop documents that the seals of the M47's vacuum pump, which generates the vacuum needed for brake assistance because a diesel does not produce it naturally, can wear and let oil through, which can end up stiffening the brake pedal.
  6. Low severityFrequency: OccasionalIntakeFaulty air flow meter on the BMW M47 (loss of power)On the 2.0 M47 diesel the air flow meter appears among parts that can fail with age and cause loss of power or judder. It is fixed by replacing the sensor; other causes must be ruled out first.Repair (garage): €100–€300

Faults that affect the Serie 3 E90

Only those that affect the versions and years that this car used. The BMW M57 has 5 documented faults in total.

  1. Critical severityFrequency: CommonIntakeBroken intake swirl flapsYes: most automatic M57 and M57TU engines (330d, 530d, 535d, 730d, X3 3.0d and so on) have six metal flaps in the intake manifold that can seize, come loose and wreck a cylinder. The E53 X5 3.0d and the manual gearboxes of the first 330d/530d are free of them, according to a specialist workshop.
  2. High severityFrequency: CommonLubricationCrankcase ventilation (PCV) valve failureThe valve that separates oil from the crankcase gases (PCV) degrades over time, especially after 120,000-150,000 km, and can cause oil consumption, bluish smoke and a rough idle and, if ignored, foul the turbo, the EGR or the particulate filter.Appears at around 120,000 km
  3. Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalCylinder head and blockCracked exhaust manifoldThe M57 exhaust manifold can crack, causing loss of power, an unstable idle and a smell of exhaust fumes in the cabin; the recommended repair is to replace it with a cast one.
  4. Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalOtherCrankshaft pulley vibration damper failureThe M57 crankshaft vibration damper (pulley) can fail with use, warning with abnormal noises and knocking at the front of the engine before it breaks completely.

    With caution

Like the rest of the family, it can suffer wear of the timing chain guides and tensioner and of the Valvetronic or VANOS; as it has no direct injection, it is not affected by the injector and NOx sensor failures documented on the N43.[21][22]

  • N43B16 121 hp, 1.6 litres (2007-2011)2007–2011 · 121 hp · N43B16

    With caution

It shares the risk of timing chain wear and, because of its direct injection, the documented failures of the injectors, coils and NOx sensor; as it has no Valvetronic according to English-language Wikipedia, that particular wear does not affect it, although VANOS valve wear does.[21][23]

  • N43B20 121-168 hp, 2.0 litres (2007-2013)2007–2013 · 121–168 hp · N43B20

    With caution

It accumulates all the documented risks of the family: wear of the timing chain, of the Valvetronic and of the VANOS and, because of its direct injection, failures of the injectors, ignition coils and NOx sensor.[21][23]

Faults that affect the Serie 3 E90

  1. Critical severityFrequency: CommonTimingWear and breakage of the timing chain guidesYes: both the N43 and the N46 can stretch the timing chain and wear its plastic guides and tensioner. On the N43, English-language Wikipedia documents that a broken guide can release fragments that block the oil strainer and cause serious damage through lack of lubrication.
  2. Medium severityFrequency: CommonInjectionInjector, ignition coil and NOx sensor failures (N43)On the direct-injection BMW N43, failures of the injectors, ignition coils (mainly in 2007-2008 units, now rare after a BMW service action) and the NOx sensor of its lean-burn combustion have been documented. The indirect-injection N46 does not have that sensor and does not suffer these failures.
  3. Medium severityFrequency: CommonIntakeWear of the Valvetronic and the VANOS solenoid valvesOver the years, the eccentric shaft or the actuator motor of the Valvetronic can wear and cause heavy idle fluctuations; the VANOS solenoid valves also fail over time, with similar symptoms and a loss of power. According to English-language Wikipedia, the 1.6-litre N43B16 does not have Valvetronic.
  4. Medium severityFrequency: CommonLubricationOil leaks and consumption (rocker cover, vacuum pump and valve stem seals)Over the years, the rocker cover gasket and the brake servo vacuum pump gasket start to seep oil on the N43 and N46; on the N46 there are also the valve stem seals, which can cause more noticeable oil consumption than on the N43.

  • N53B30 3.0 (2007-2013)2007–2013 · 215–268 hp · N53B30

    With caution

The piezoelectric injectors and the high-pressure pump are the weak points identified by several sources; only recommended if their condition is verified.[28][29][30]

Faults that affect the Serie 3 E90

  1. High severityFrequency: CommonInjectionN53 piezoelectric injector failureThe N53's piezoelectric direct injectors fail frequently and cause misfires, rough idle and limp mode; replacing them is expensive and they must be coded.
  2. Medium severityFrequency: CommonCoolingElectric water pump and thermostat failureThe N52's plastic electric water pump cracks or fails sooner than a mechanical one, and the thermostat usually goes with it; it is recommended to replace it as a precaution at around 80,000-100,000 km.Repair (garage): €350–€600Appears at around 80,000 km
  3. Medium severityFrequency: CommonLubricationOil leak from the oil filter housing gasketThe oil filter housing gasket hardens over time and leaks oil on all N52 engines; the leak can soil the engine and damage nearby parts.
  4. Low severityFrequency: CommonLubricationValve cover and crankcase ventilation valveThe N52's plastic valve cover cracks with heat cycles and the crankcase ventilation system fails, causing whistling, leaks and oil consumption.Repair (garage): €200–€350
  5. Low severityFrequency: OccasionalLubricationN52 hydraulic lifter noiseN52 engines from before December 2008 can have hydraulic lifters that make a tapping noise when cold because of a lubrication problem.
  6. Low severityFrequency: OccasionalIgnitionN53 ignition coils from 2007-2008 (BMW service action)BMW replaced the coils of 2007-2008 N53 and N43 engines free of charge, because they could fail early through temperature and insulation problems and cause misfires. Autobild describes it as an issue not related to safety.

    With caution

Simpler than the N54 (one turbo and solenoid injectors), but it keeps the oil leaks from the filter housing and the electric water pump; check both.[32][36][37]

Faults that affect the Serie 3 E90

  1. High severityFrequency: CommonFuelHigh-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failureThe N54's high-pressure pump is one of its best-documented failures: most units will have had it replaced at some point. It warns of itself with long cranking and loss of power; the 2010 campaign was US-only.
  2. Medium severityFrequency: CommonInjectionN54 piezoelectric injector failureThe N54's piezoelectric injectors can clog or leak and cause intermittent misfires. The N55 has solenoid injectors, so it does not share this weak point.
  3. Medium severityFrequency: CommonTurboTurbo wastegate noise and failureOn the N54 the wastegate rods work loose and produce a metallic rattle; over time they reduce boost pressure. On the N55 it is the electric actuator that fails.
  4. Medium severityFrequency: CommonCoolingElectric water pump and thermostat failureThe electric water pump on the N54 and N55 fails without warning, at around 100,000-150,000 km, and is usually replaced together with the thermostat. If not dealt with, the engine overheats.
  5. Medium severityFrequency: CommonLubricationOil leak from the oil filter housing gasketThe oil filter housing gasket on the N54 and N55 leaks oil as it ages; the oil can drip onto the auxiliary drive belt, and there are also leaks from the valve cover.
  6. Medium severityFrequency: CommonIgnitionOil in the spark plug wells from the rocker cover gasketOn the N54 and N55 the rocker cover gasket hardens with age and lets oil seep into the spark plug wells. Guides treat it as a known fault: it smells of burnt oil and can damage spark plugs and coils.

    With caution

Cars with this first generation are now around 20-26 years old in 2026 and often accumulate the same weak points as the whole 6HP family (jerking, valve body or mechatronic faults), documented on BMW, Audi and Land Rover; check the gearbox oil change history before buying.[1][2][3]

  • 2nd generation (6HP21/28/32, 2007-2014)2007–2014 · 6HP21, 6HP28, 6HP28X, 6HP32, 6HP32A

    With caution

The 2007 revision did not eliminate the family's weak points: jerking and mechatronic faults are still documented on cars with this version, and Jaguar ended up replacing the 6HP with the ZF 8HP on the XF as early as 2012. It is still worth checking the gearbox service history before buying.[4][5][6]

Faults that affect the Serie 3 E90

  1. High severityFrequency: CommonElectronicsValve body and mechatronic failure: erratic shifts or a locked-up gearboxYes, and it can be serious: there are documented failures of the ZF 6HP valve body or mechatronic unit on BMW, Audi and Land Rover models from around 90,000-100,000 km, with cases that go as far as preventing a gear from engaging (including reverse) and dealer quotes of €6,000 to €10,000.Repair: €6,000–€10,000Appears at around 90,000 km
  2. Medium severityFrequency: CommonTransmissionJerking and harsh shifts from converter wear and ageing oilYes: on BMW, Audi and Land Rover models with the ZF 6HP there are reports of jerking, hesitation and harsh shifts from 80,000-150,000 km, especially if the gearbox oil has never been changed. The converter locks up in all six gears to save fuel, which speeds up its wear over the years.Repair (garage): €150–€400Appears at around 80,000 km
  3. Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalLubricationOil leaks from the sump or the gearbox sealsYes, although in a minority of cases: there are reports of ZF 6HP gearbox oil leaks on the BMW X5 (at 180,000 km) and the Audi A6 (between 204,000 and 208,000 km). If not repaired, the loss of pressure can speed up internal wear and lead to valve body or mechatronic failure.Repair (garage): €300–€600Appears at around 180,000 km

Frequently asked questions

Is the BMW Serie 3 E90 reliable?

All 7 engines and 1 gearbox of the BMW Serie 3 E90 that we have documented have high or critical severity faults: the BMW N47, the BMW N57, the BMW M47, the BMW M57, the BMW N43/N46, the BMW N52 / N53, the BMW N54/N55 and the ZF 6HP gearbox. None has a «Buy» verdict; the safest option is the ZF 6HP gearbox, with a «With caution» verdict. Outside the engine, the 3 Series E90 is included in BMW's successive campaigns over the Takata driver's airbag gas generators and over the heater fan connector (fire risk). The press and owner reports also document frequent failures of the steering rack and power steering pump, and wear of the shock absorbers and bushes with mileage.

Which BMW Serie 3 E90 engine is the most reliable?

Among the 7 engines and 1 gearbox we have documented, none has a «Buy» verdict; the safest option is the ZF 6HP gearbox, with a «With caution» verdict. Cars with this first generation are now around 20-26 years old in 2026 and often accumulate the same weak points as the whole 6HP family (jerking, valve body or mechatronic faults), documented on BMW, Audi and Land Rover; check the gearbox oil change history before buying.[1][2][3]

What problems does the BMW Serie 3 E90 have apart from the engine?

Outside the engine, the 3 Series E90 is included in BMW's successive campaigns over the Takata driver's airbag gas generators and over the heater fan connector (fire risk). The press and owner reports also document frequent failures of the steering rack and power steering pump, and wear of the shock absorbers and bushes with mileage. The most important documented faults are: steering rack and power steering pump failure (steering, high severity), campaigns over the Takata driver's airbag gas generators (airbags and safety, critical severity), campaign over fire risk from the heater fan connector (climate control, high severity) and battery positive cable connector failure (electrical system, high severity).[7][8][9]

What faults does the BMW Serie 3 E90 have?

The most important by severity and frequency, on the engines we have documented, are: rear timing chain stretch and breakage (BMW N47, critical severity), EGR cooler leaks with risk of engine fire (BMW N57, critical severity), intake swirl flap breakage (swirl flaps) (BMW M47, critical severity), broken intake manifold swirl flaps (BMW N47, critical severity) and rear timing chain wear (BMW N57, critical severity).

What is the best year to buy a BMW Serie 3 E90?

According to our rating by year, the best is 2011 (4.9/10); the worst rated is 2012 (4.2/10). Each year's rating counts only the engines sold that year and the faults that affect those units: open each year to see what changes.

Does the BMW Serie 3 E90 have recalls?

Yes: we have documented 4 campaigns for the BMW Serie 3 E90, such as may 2026 campaign over the Takata driver's airbag gas generators (2026). Check with your VIN at the official service centre whether yours has been done.[7]
