Faults that affect the Serie 5 E60

  1. Critical severityFrequency: Very frequentTimingRear timing chain stretch and breakageYes: the N47 has its timing chain at the rear of the engine, next to the gearbox, and on a very high proportion of units, especially those built between 2007 and 2009, it stretches or breaks prematurely because of an inadequate tensioner, with a risk of destroying the engine.Repair (garage): €1,590–€3,000Appears at around 50,000 km
  2. Critical severityFrequency: CommonIntakeBroken intake manifold swirl flapsYes: the N47's intake manifold has plastic swirl flaps that, with diesel soot and the passing years, can crack, come loose and be sucked into the cylinder, with a risk of seriously damaging the piston, cylinder head and valves.
  3. High severityFrequency: CommonTurboTurbo and wastegate valve failureThe N47's turbo does not usually fail from general wear, but because of failure of the wastegate valve, which regulates boost and can seize or lose adjustment, sending fuel consumption soaring; oil leaks from the turbo itself are also common.Repair (garage): €900–€1,800
  4. Medium severityFrequency: CommonEmissions controlClogged or seized EGR valveYes, as on most diesels of its generation: the N47's EGR valve seizes or clogs with carbon, especially on cars used in town, causing an unstable idle, jerking and loss of power; it is not usually a serious fault if it is cleaned or replaced in time.Repair (garage): €400–€1,500
  5. Medium severityFrequency: CommonClutchDual-mass flywheel wear (manual gearbox versions)Yes: on manual-gearbox BMW N47s, the dual-mass flywheel can wear, especially after a lot of town mileage or driving in high gears at low revs; the typical symptoms are vibrations, a metallic rattle at idle and jerking when pulling away.Appears at around 150,000 km

    With caution

It already has the swirl flaps, with a risk of serious damage if they break, and the 150 hp variant built between September 2001 and November 2003 also accounts for documented turbo faults.[10][11][12]

  • M47D20TU2 122-163 hp (2004-2007)2004–2007 · 122–163 hp · M47D20TU2, M47TU2D20

    With caution

It carries the same swirl flap risk as the previous revision until BMW strengthened the design in 2006; check whether the manifold has already been inspected or reinforced.[10]

Faults that affect the Serie 5 E60

  1. Critical severityFrequency: Very frequentIntakeIntake swirl flap breakage (swirl flaps)Yes: the common rail versions of the M47 (built since 2001) have flaps in the intake manifold that, with diesel soot and heat cycles, can break and be sucked into the cylinder, with a risk of serious damage to the piston, cylinder head and valves.
  2. High severityFrequency: CommonTurboLoss of power and turbo faultsThe M47's turbo does not usually fail suddenly, but it loses power gradually as carbon builds up in the variable geometry; the 150 hp variant built between September 2001 and November 2003 also accounts for turbo faults documented by specialist workshops.
  3. Medium severityFrequency: CommonInjectionBlocked and seized injectorsOver the miles, carbon builds up around the M47's injector seats and can seize them; a German used-car guide adds that the high-pressure pump on the first common rail units (before the first facelift) is relatively prone to failure.
  4. Medium severityFrequency: CommonClutchDual-mass flywheel wear (manual gearbox versions)On BMWs with the M47 engine and a manual gearbox, the dual-mass flywheel can wear with mileage, especially with a lot of urban use or long spells in high gears at low revs; typical symptoms are vibrations, a metallic rattle at idle and jerking when pulling away.Appears at around 150,000 km
  5. Critical severityFrequency: RareOtherOil leak from the brake vacuum pumpA BMW specialist workshop documents that the seals of the M47's vacuum pump, which generates the vacuum needed for brake assistance because a diesel does not produce it naturally, can wear and let oil through, which can end up stiffening the brake pedal.
  6. Low severityFrequency: OccasionalIntakeFaulty air flow meter on the BMW M47 (loss of power)On the 2.0 M47 diesel the air flow meter appears among parts that can fail with age and cause loss of power or judder. It is fixed by replacing the sensor; other causes must be ruled out first.Repair (garage): €100–€300

Faults that affect the Serie 5 E60

  1. Critical severityFrequency: CommonIntakeBroken intake swirl flapsYes: most automatic M57 and M57TU engines (330d, 530d, 535d, 730d, X3 3.0d and so on) have six metal flaps in the intake manifold that can seize, come loose and wreck a cylinder. The E53 X5 3.0d and the manual gearboxes of the first 330d/530d are free of them, according to a specialist workshop.
  2. High severityFrequency: CommonLubricationCrankcase ventilation (PCV) valve failureThe valve that separates oil from the crankcase gases (PCV) degrades over time, especially after 120,000-150,000 km, and can cause oil consumption, bluish smoke and a rough idle and, if ignored, foul the turbo, the EGR or the particulate filter.Appears at around 120,000 km
  3. Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalCylinder head and blockCracked exhaust manifoldThe M57 exhaust manifold can crack, causing loss of power, an unstable idle and a smell of exhaust fumes in the cabin; the recommended repair is to replace it with a cast one.
  4. Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalOtherCrankshaft pulley vibration damper failureThe M57 crankshaft vibration damper (pulley) can fail with use, warning with abnormal noises and knocking at the front of the engine before it breaks completely.
  5. Low severityFrequency: OccasionalIntakeFaulty air flow meter on the BMW M57 (loss of power)The air flow meter is a known fault on six-cylinder M57 diesels: over time it loses accuracy and the car pulls less. It is a cheap repair compared with the turbo or injection.Repair (garage): €100–€300

    With caution

It shares the risk of chain, Valvetronic and VANOS wear with the rest of the family; as it keeps indirect injection, it does not show the injector and NOx sensor failures specific to the N43.[16][17][18]

Faults that affect the Serie 5 E60

Only those that affect the versions and years that this car used. The BMW N43/N46 has 4 documented faults in total.

  1. Critical severityFrequency: CommonTimingWear and breakage of the timing chain guidesYes: both the N43 and the N46 can stretch the timing chain and wear its plastic guides and tensioner. On the N43, English-language Wikipedia documents that a broken guide can release fragments that block the oil strainer and cause serious damage through lack of lubrication.
  2. Medium severityFrequency: CommonIntakeWear of the Valvetronic and the VANOS solenoid valvesOver the years, the eccentric shaft or the actuator motor of the Valvetronic can wear and cause heavy idle fluctuations; the VANOS solenoid valves also fail over time, with similar symptoms and a loss of power. According to English-language Wikipedia, the 1.6-litre N43B16 does not have Valvetronic.
  3. Medium severityFrequency: CommonLubricationOil leaks and consumption (rocker cover, vacuum pump and valve stem seals)Over the years, the rocker cover gasket and the brake servo vacuum pump gasket start to seep oil on the N43 and N46; on the N46 there are also the valve stem seals, which can cause more noticeable oil consumption than on the N43.

Faults that affect the Serie 5 E60

  1. High severityFrequency: CommonCoolingThermostat and water pump failureThe M54's thermostat, housing and water pump contain plastics that become brittle and fail. If left unattended, overheating can warp the aluminium cylinder head. It is advisable to replace them together.Appears at around 129,000 km
  2. High severityFrequency: CommonCoolingCracked expansion tank and coolant leakThe plastic expansion tank degrades over the years and eventually cracks. It is cheap compared with the cost of overheating an M52/M54, and age matters more than mileage.
  3. Medium severityFrequency: CommonLubricationCracked crankcase ventilation valve (CCV) and oil consumptionThe M54's CCV valve (oil separator) is made of plastic and cracks with age: oil then gets into the intake, consumption rises and a rough idle and smoke appear. It is the engine's most frequently cited weak point.Appears at around 96,000 km
  4. Medium severityFrequency: CommonLubricationOil leak from the valve cover gasketThe M54's valve cover is made of plastic and, over the years, warps and stops sealing: oil leaks, a burning smell, oily spark plugs and misfires appear. It is replaced together with the gasket.
  5. Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalOtherWorn VANOS O-ringsThe seals in the VANOS (variable valve timing) system harden with heat and synthetic oil: the engine loses power below 3,000 rpm and the idle becomes rough. It is fixed with a seal kit.Appears at around 129,000 km

    With caution

The piezoelectric injectors and the high-pressure pump are the weak points identified by several sources; only recommended if their condition is verified.[27][28][29]

Faults that affect the Serie 5 E60

  1. High severityFrequency: CommonInjectionN53 piezoelectric injector failureThe N53's piezoelectric direct injectors fail frequently and cause misfires, rough idle and limp mode; replacing them is expensive and they must be coded.
  2. Medium severityFrequency: CommonCoolingElectric water pump and thermostat failureThe N52's plastic electric water pump cracks or fails sooner than a mechanical one, and the thermostat usually goes with it; it is recommended to replace it as a precaution at around 80,000-100,000 km.Repair (garage): €350–€600Appears at around 80,000 km
  3. Medium severityFrequency: CommonLubricationOil leak from the oil filter housing gasketThe oil filter housing gasket hardens over time and leaks oil on all N52 engines; the leak can soil the engine and damage nearby parts.
  4. Low severityFrequency: CommonLubricationValve cover and crankcase ventilation valveThe N52's plastic valve cover cracks with heat cycles and the crankcase ventilation system fails, causing whistling, leaks and oil consumption.Repair (garage): €200–€350
  5. Low severityFrequency: OccasionalLubricationN52 hydraulic lifter noiseN52 engines from before December 2008 can have hydraulic lifters that make a tapping noise when cold because of a lubrication problem.
  6. Low severityFrequency: OccasionalIgnitionN53 ignition coils from 2007-2008 (BMW service action)BMW replaced the coils of 2007-2008 N53 and N43 engines free of charge, because they could fail early through temperature and insulation problems and cause misfires. Autobild describes it as an issue not related to safety.

    With caution

It is the engine with the most documented faults in the family: high-pressure pump, injectors and wastegates; check which parts have already been replaced.[31][32][33]

Faults that affect the Serie 5 E60

  1. High severityFrequency: CommonFuelHigh-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failureThe N54's high-pressure pump is one of its best-documented failures: most units will have had it replaced at some point. It warns of itself with long cranking and loss of power; the 2010 campaign was US-only.
  2. Medium severityFrequency: CommonInjectionN54 piezoelectric injector failureThe N54's piezoelectric injectors can clog or leak and cause intermittent misfires. The N55 has solenoid injectors, so it does not share this weak point.
  3. Medium severityFrequency: CommonTurboTurbo wastegate noise and failureOn the N54 the wastegate rods work loose and produce a metallic rattle; over time they reduce boost pressure. On the N55 it is the electric actuator that fails.
  4. Medium severityFrequency: CommonCoolingElectric water pump and thermostat failureThe electric water pump on the N54 and N55 fails without warning, at around 100,000-150,000 km, and is usually replaced together with the thermostat. If not dealt with, the engine overheats.
  5. Medium severityFrequency: CommonLubricationOil leak from the oil filter housing gasketThe oil filter housing gasket on the N54 and N55 leaks oil as it ages; the oil can drip onto the auxiliary drive belt, and there are also leaks from the valve cover.
  6. Medium severityFrequency: CommonIgnitionOil in the spark plug wells from the rocker cover gasketOn the N54 and N55 the rocker cover gasket hardens with age and lets oil seep into the spark plug wells. Guides treat it as a known fault: it smells of burnt oil and can damage spark plugs and coils.

    With caution

Cars with this first generation are now around 20-26 years old in 2026 and often accumulate the same weak points as the whole 6HP family (jerking, valve body or mechatronic faults), documented on BMW, Audi and Land Rover; check the gearbox oil change history before buying.[3][35][36]

  • 2nd generation (6HP21/28/32, 2007-2014)2007–2014 · 6HP21, 6HP28, 6HP28X, 6HP32, 6HP32A

    With caution

The 2007 revision did not eliminate the family's weak points: jerking and mechatronic faults are still documented on cars with this version, and Jaguar ended up replacing the 6HP with the ZF 8HP on the XF as early as 2012. It is still worth checking the gearbox service history before buying.[37][38][39]

Faults that affect the Serie 5 E60

  1. High severityFrequency: CommonElectronicsValve body and mechatronic failure: erratic shifts or a locked-up gearboxYes, and it can be serious: there are documented failures of the ZF 6HP valve body or mechatronic unit on BMW, Audi and Land Rover models from around 90,000-100,000 km, with cases that go as far as preventing a gear from engaging (including reverse) and dealer quotes of €6,000 to €10,000.Repair: €6,000–€10,000Appears at around 90,000 km
  2. Medium severityFrequency: CommonTransmissionJerking and harsh shifts from converter wear and ageing oilYes: on BMW, Audi and Land Rover models with the ZF 6HP there are reports of jerking, hesitation and harsh shifts from 80,000-150,000 km, especially if the gearbox oil has never been changed. The converter locks up in all six gears to save fuel, which speeds up its wear over the years.Repair (garage): €150–€400Appears at around 80,000 km
  3. Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalLubricationOil leaks from the sump or the gearbox sealsYes, although in a minority of cases: there are reports of ZF 6HP gearbox oil leaks on the BMW X5 (at 180,000 km) and the Audi A6 (between 204,000 and 208,000 km). If not repaired, the loss of pressure can speed up internal wear and lead to valve body or mechatronic failure.Repair (garage): €300–€600Appears at around 180,000 km

Away from the engine, the 5 Series E60 (2003-2010) is covered by BMW's European campaign over the Takata driver airbag inflator and by two other recalls: the positive battery cable and brake assistance. Fiches-auto.fr and gebrauchtwagenberater.de also document wear of the ZF automatic gearbox, of the clutch and dual-mass flywheel assembly, and water leaks through the sunroof or panoramic roof.

Which BMW Serie 5 E60 engine is the most reliable?

Among the 8 engines and 1 gearbox we have documented, the safest option is the BMW N62 / N63 in its N62B48TU 4.8 naturally aspirated 355-367 hp (550i, 650i, 750i, X5 4.8i; 2005-2010) version, with a «Buy» verdict. The German guides describe the 6 Series N62 as a solid engine and the X5 E70 4.8i's as an engine with few problems; even so, at over 15 years old, the coolant hoses and valve stem seals should be checked.[1][2]

What problems does the BMW Serie 5 E60 have apart from the engine?

Away from the engine, the 5 Series E60 (2003-2010) is covered by BMW's European campaign over the Takata driver airbag inflator and by two other recalls: the positive battery cable and brake assistance. Fiches-auto.fr and gebrauchtwagenberater.de also document wear of the ZF automatic gearbox, of the clutch and dual-mass flywheel assembly, and water leaks through the sunroof or panoramic roof. The most important documented faults are: risk of the driver airbag inflator rupturing (Takata) (airbags and safety, critical severity), positive battery cable badly secured, with risk of overheating and fire (electrical system, high severity), wear of the ZF 6-speed automatic gearbox and of the clutch and dual-mass flywheel assembly (gearbox and clutch, high severity) and soft brake pedal due to a fault in the brake servo vacuum pump or hose (brakes, critical severity).[3][4][5]

What faults does the BMW Serie 5 E60 have?

The most important by severity and frequency, on the engines we have documented, are: rear timing chain stretch and breakage (BMW N47, critical severity), intake swirl flap breakage (swirl flaps) (BMW M47, critical severity), broken intake manifold swirl flaps (BMW N47, critical severity), broken intake swirl flaps (BMW M57, critical severity) and wear and breakage of the timing chain guides (BMW N43/N46, critical severity).

What is the best year to buy a BMW Serie 5 E60?

According to our rating by year, the best are 2006, 2005 and 2004 (5.3/10); the worst rated is 2007 (4.9/10). Each year's rating counts only the engines sold that year and the faults that affect those units: open each year to see what changes.
