Citroën C8 problems (2002–2014)

We have documented 2 engines for the Citroën C8; the 2.2 HDi has high or critical severity faults. The safest option is the 2.0 and 2.2 16v EW10/EW12 in the 2.0 16v 136 hp (EW10J4, RFN/RFR, 1999-2005) and 2.0 16v VVT 140-143 hp (EW10A, RFJ, 2004-2011) versions, with a «Buy» verdict.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

Outside the engine: Outside the engine, the Citroën C8 has no known recalls; owners cite electric side doors, tyre wear, rear electric windows and electronic faults, mainly on the earliest cars.[10][11]

Citroën C8 rating: acceptable reliability

Calculated using only 9 documented faults and their sources: the most serious and frequent faults weigh more. Limited evidence: it is based on few sources or few documented faults, so it is not included in the rankings. Having few documented faults does not mean it is reliable: it may simply be little studied. How it is calculated

The weak points of the Citroën C8

  1. 1High severity: DPF clogging with additive, especially on the 128-138 hp version2.2 HDi engine
  2. 2High severity: Turbo faults, somewhat more frequent on the sequential twin-turbo versions2.2 HDi engine
  3. 3High severity: Piezo injector wear and failure2.2 HDi engine
  4. 4Medium severity: Faulty ignition coils2.0 and 2.2 16v EW10/EW12 engine
  5. 5Medium severity: Electric sliding side door failure on the C8Bodywork and interior

Documented engines, from highest to lowest risk

The first label is the most serious fault affecting that engine in this car; the second, our verdict for the versions it is fitted to. Each engine's risk index is calculated only from the faults that affect this car (how we calculate it). We only show engines we have documented with sources: if yours does not appear, we have not analysed it yet. View all engines

    With caution

Fiches-auto documents a recurring DPF clogging problem in this version (98 cases out of 277 reviews); check the maintenance history of the DPF and the additive system before buying.[14]

  • 2.2 HDi 170-175 twin-turbo (DW12 BTED4, 2005-2010)2005–2010 · 170–175 hp · DW12, DW12BTED4, ZSD-422

    With caution

The two-turbo system adds mechanical complexity; fiches-auto records a significant number of turbo cases in the twin-turbo versions, although, according to the same source, it does not amount to a chronic problem.[14][15]

Faults that affect the C8

  1. High severityFrequency: CommonEmissions controlDPF clogging with additive, especially on the 128-138 hp versionThe particulate filter (DPF) with additive on the 2.2 HDi has a documented recurring problem in the 128-138 hp version (98 cases out of 277 reviews on fiches-auto); the more powerful twin-turbo versions show far fewer cases. The emissions fault warning light comes on and, if ignored, the car loses power.
  2. High severityFrequency: OccasionalTurboTurbo faults, somewhat more frequent on the sequential twin-turbo versionsThe 2.2 HDi comes in single-turbo versions (128-156 hp) and twin-turbo versions with two turbochargers in sequence (170 hp and up). Fiches-auto does not consider it a chronic problem, but it does record a significant number of turbo cases across all power outputs, somewhat higher on the twin-turbos.
  3. High severityFrequency: OccasionalInjectionPiezo injector wear and failureThe 2.2 HDi uses third-generation common-rail injection with piezo injectors at up to 1,800-2,000 bar. Fiches-auto documents injector cases across several power outputs, without it being the most repeated fault, with symptoms of hard starting, jerking or higher fuel consumption.
  4. Medium severityFrequency: RareClutchDual-mass flywheel wear, less frequent than on other HDi enginesThe 2.2 HDi has a dual-mass flywheel but, unlike smaller HDi engines such as the 1.6 HDi, fiches-auto does not document a chronic problem: very few cases in the tables consulted. Even so, it is a wear part: vibration and knocking are the signs to watch for before buying.

Oil consumption is what comes up most in owner reviews of the 2.2 (10 of 56 according to the Fiches-auto.fr table, 5 of them in the 407 2.2, although in the 407 at least one testimony refers to the steering oil rather than the engine). It is a small sample with no independent second source, so it is worth measuring oil consumption and demanding proof of the last timing belt replacement.[4][7][10][17][18]

Owner reviews of the 407, C4 and C5 with this 2.0 mainly mention sensors, catalytic converter, oil and the gearbox, with no repeated internal failures; there are no recorded cases of variable valve timing failure in the pages consulted, although the sample is small.[7][8][9]

Faults that affect the C8

  1. Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalIgnitionFaulty ignition coilsIgnition coils are the fault reported by the press (gebrauchtwagenberater.de, CarsGuide) and by 16 of the 170 owner reviews of the 2.0 EW10; they also appear on the 2.2. A weak coil causes misfires, jerking and the engine warning light coming on.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Citroën C8 reliable?

We have documented 2 engines for the Citroën C8; the 2.2 HDi has high or critical severity faults. The safest option is the 2.0 and 2.2 16v EW10/EW12 in the 2.0 16v 136 hp (EW10J4, RFN/RFR, 1999-2005) and 2.0 16v VVT 140-143 hp (EW10A, RFJ, 2004-2011) versions, with a «Buy» verdict. Outside the engine, the Citroën C8 has no known recalls; owners cite electric side doors, tyre wear, rear electric windows and electronic faults, mainly on the earliest cars.

Which Citroën C8 engine is the most reliable?

Among the 2 engines we have documented, the safest option is the 2.0 and 2.2 16v EW10/EW12 in the 2.0 16v 136 hp (EW10J4, RFN/RFR, 1999-2005) and 2.0 16v VVT 140-143 hp (EW10A, RFJ, 2004-2011) versions, with a «Buy» verdict. What problems does the Citroën C8 have apart from the engine?

Outside the engine, the Citroën C8 has no known recalls; owners cite electric side doors, tyre wear, rear electric windows and electronic faults, mainly on the earliest cars. The most important documented faults are: electric sliding side door failure on the C8 (bodywork and interior, medium severity), repeated electronic faults in the BSI control unit and wiring (electronics and infotainment, medium severity), premature tyre wear caused by the front axle geometry (tyres and wheels, low severity) and failure of the rear electric windows and their switches (electrical system, low severity).[10][11]

What faults does the Citroën C8 have?

The most important by severity and frequency, on the engines we have documented, are: DPF clogging with additive, especially on the 128-138 hp version (2.2 HDi, high severity), turbo faults, somewhat more frequent on the sequential twin-turbo versions (2.2 HDi, high severity), piezo injector wear and failure (2.2 HDi, high severity), faulty ignition coils (2.0 and 2.2 16v EW10/EW12, medium severity) and dual-mass flywheel wear, less frequent than on other HDi engines (2.2 HDi, medium severity).

What is the best year to buy a Citroën C8?

According to our rating by year, the best are 2014, 2013, 2012 and 1 other years with the same rating (7.8/10); the worst rated is 2002 (7.2/10). Each year's rating counts only the engines sold that year and the faults that affect those units: open each year to see what changes.
