Fiat 500e problems (2020–today)

The only engine of the Fiat 500e that we have documented, the Fiat 500e, has high or critical severity faults in the versions it is fitted to. Our verdict for the versions it is fitted to: «With caution».[1]

Outside the engine: The 500e (built in Turin since March 2020) had, besides the campaigns for its traction battery, which we assess under its electric drivetrain, two recalls: a brake module that could override the ABS, and an airbag warning light that could show incorrect information. Owners surveyed in France and Germany add 12 V battery drain and software faults in the UConnect infotainment system.[1][2][3]

Documented engine

The first label is the most serious fault affecting that engine in this car; the second, our verdict for the versions it is fitted to. Each engine's risk index is calculated only from the faults that affect this car (how we calculate it). We only show engines we have documented with sources: if yours does not appear, we have not analysed it yet. View all engines

The battery recalls should be checked by chassis number and AC charging should be tested; there are few owner reviews (seven).[1]

  • 500e 42 kWh, 118 hp (2020-)since 2020 · 118 hp

    With caution

This is the version with the most reviews (16 on Fiches-auto.fr): it includes the case of a traction battery rendered unusable at 20 months and the 2023 and 2024 recalls. Check that the recalls have been carried out.[1]

Faults that affect the 500e

  1. Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalTraction batteryTraction battery fire risk (2023 and 2024 recalls)Fiat has recalled the 500e over traction battery fire risk on two occasions: April 2023 (contaminated materials, built from October 2020 to July 2021) and 2024 (negative terminal clamp not tightened properly). Both are precautionary recalls.
  2. Medium severityFrequency: RareChargingRefusals and interruptions of AC chargingSome 500e owners report AC charging being refused or cut off, along with the warning 'check charging system'; it is often caused by a poorly seated connector, and there are no figures for repairs due to a charger fault.

What problems does the Fiat 500e have apart from the engine?

The 500e (built in Turin since March 2020) had, besides the campaigns for its traction battery, which we assess under its electric drivetrain, two recalls: a brake module that could override the ABS, and an airbag warning light that could show incorrect information. Owners surveyed in France and Germany add 12 V battery drain and software faults in the UConnect infotainment system. The most important documented faults are: 12 V battery drain and AC charging failures (electrical system, medium severity), IBS module fault that can cause loss of ABS (September 2021 campaign) (brakes, high severity), incorrect passenger airbag deactivation warning (April 2021 campaign) (airbags and safety, high severity) and front axle shafts with risk of loss of torque at the wheels (gearbox and clutch, high severity).[1][2][3]

What faults does the Fiat 500e have?

The most important by severity and frequency, on the engines we have documented, are: traction battery fire risk (2023 and 2024 recalls) (Fiat 500e, critical severity) and refusals and interruptions of AC charging (Fiat 500e, medium severity).

What is the best year to buy a Fiat 500e?

According to our rating by year, the best are 2026 and 2025 (8.6/10); the worst rated is 2020 (7.3/10). Each year's rating counts only the engines sold that year and the faults that affect those units: open each year to see what changes.
