2022 Renault Austral problems
The 2022 Renault Austral was sold with 2 engines that we have documented: the E-Tech Híbrido and the 1.3 TCe. All of them have serious faults that affect the cars of that year. The safest option is the 1.3 TCe (verdict “Buy”). Outside the engine, 5 documented faults affect 2022 cars, such as erratic behaviour of the E-Tech hybrid automatic gearbox.

It shares the multi-mode gearbox fault pattern with the other E-Tech versions and adds its own problem of stalling and injection warnings, documented on the Austral and Espace VI.[2][3]
Faults that affect 2022 cars
- High severityFrequency: CommonTransmissionMulti-mode gearbox failure (risk of breakage)On the Clio, Captur, Arkana, Austral, Duster and Jogger with the E-Tech engine, reports describe a risk of the multi-mode gearbox breaking and being replaced. Renault has launched a campaign over a primary shaft seal fault (2020-January 2024, ~150,000 vehicles) that lets oil into the electric motor.
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalInjectionStalling and injection warnings on the 1.2 E-Tech 200 (HR12)On the Austral and Espace VI with the 1.2 E-Tech 200 (HR12) engine, several reports describe "injection to be checked" warnings, turbo faults and one case of the engine stalling completely at motorway speed. We have not found the same pattern on cars with the 1.6 H4M.
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalElectronicsHybrid system electrical fault with "DANGER" warning and car won't startSome Renault E-Techs show an "electrical problem DANGER" warning on the instrument panel and the car may not start or may lose electrical functions. Renault has launched a reprogramming campaign for vehicles built between April 2020 and April 2023 (around 154,000 vehicles).
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalElectronics12 V battery going flat or needing early replacementSeveral Clio, Arkana and Austral owners with the E-Tech engine document premature replacement of the 12 V auxiliary battery, in one case twice in the first year. It is not the most widespread fault of the system, but it appears repeatedly across different models.

The reliability record is clearly better than that of the 1.2 TCe and PSA's 1.2 PureTech, according to L'argus: no oil consumption or chain problems have been documented. The only known outstanding issue is the fuel pump fuse failure on the Captur II and Clio V, with no confirmed factory fix at the date of the latest source consulted.[5]

The Renault Austral 1.3 TCe: all its faults and what to checkFaults outside the engine in the 2022 Renault Austral
- High severityFrequency: CommonGearbox and clutchErratic behaviour of the E-Tech hybrid automatic gearboxOn the 200 hp E-Tech hybrid Austral built from 3 October 2022 to 25 June 2024, the gearbox input shaft seal can wear out early and allow oil to leak towards the electric motor. Renault covers the repair (seal or complete gearbox) in France even after the two-year warranty has expired, but it is not a recall.
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonElectronics and infotainmentOpenR Link infotainment screen freezes and restartsThe openR Link screen in the Austral can go black, white or freeze. Renault fixes it with a remote update (version 3.2.0) for around 135,000 cars of several models built between April and mid-October 2024, and owners describe similar faults on other units.
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalElectrical system12 V battery drain while parkedSeveral Austral owners report that the 12 V battery drains while the car is parked, sometimes accompanied by warnings that driver assistance systems or the parking brake are unavailable; Renault has not publicly acknowledged excessive standby drain, so we treat it as reported by owners and not as a confirmed fault.
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalAirbags and safetyElectric front seat that slides back onto rear passenger (campaign 0E9W)With the Easy Access function activated, the Austral's electric front seat could slide so far back that the backrest hit a rear passenger. Renault recalled those built between 21 April 2022 and 28 November 2023 (27,893 vehicles across the Austral and Espace VI) and is fixing it with a software update.
- High severityFrequency: RareTyres and wheelsWheel bolts not tightened properly on 2022 Austral (OEF1 campaign)Renault recalled a small batch of Australs (and Mégane) built between 17 August and 5 December 2022 because the wheel bolts on one or more wheels might not be properly tightened, and a wheel could come off. Safety Gate puts the number at 393 cars worldwide.
