Saab 9-5 problems (1997–2010)

All 2 engines of the Saab 9-5 that we have documented have high or critical severity faults: the 1.9 JTD/Multijet and 2.4 JTD and the 2.0 DTI and 2.2 DTI. None has a «Buy» verdict; the safest option is the 2.0 DTI and 2.2 DTI, with a «With caution» verdict.[1][2]

Outside the engine: Outside the engine, the first-generation Saab 9-5 has only two official British DVSA recalls documented: the fuel return hose on cars built from 2006 to 2008, and the towing hitch ball joint (2002). The Dutch inspection data point to fluid leaks, leaking exhausts and damaged steering gaiters in model years 1997 to 2005.[3][4][5]

Saab 9-5 rating: acceptable reliability

Calculated using only 11 documented faults and their sources: the most serious and frequent faults weigh more. Limited evidence: we have not yet studied the engines it fitted in 1997–2001, so its engine score does not cover all its versions and is not included in the rankings. How it is calculated

Documented engines, from highest to lowest risk

The first label is the most serious fault affecting that engine in this car; the second, our verdict for the versions it is fitted to. Each engine's risk index is calculated only from the faults that affect this car (how we calculate it). We only show engines we have documented with sources: if yours does not appear, we have not analysed it yet. View all engines

    With caution

It shares the 8-valve version's EGR valve weakness and, on the Opel and Saab engines, the intake flaps, described as typical of this engine in the Opel Zafira B. With more power and, on many cars, a standard particulate filter, turbo wear and DPF clogging in urban use are added. Worth considering with a maintenance history and by checking these points.[8][9]

Faults that affect the 9-5

  1. High severityFrequency: CommonIntakeIntake manifold flap failure (swirl effect)Yes: the intake manifold has flaps that create a swirl in the air at low revs, and their mechanism can seize or break with use. Two independent data sheets point to this fault as typical of Opel's 1.9 CDTI, with loss of power and the engine warning light on.
  2. High severityFrequency: OccasionalTurboTurbocharger wear or failureThe turbo (fixed on the basic versions, variable geometry on the more powerful ones) fails occasionally: a documented Alfa Romeo 147 needed a new turbo at around 215,000 km, and the Opel Vectra C and Zafira B report failures among their owners, although other accounts describe it as very durable.
  3. Medium severityFrequency: CommonEmissions controlEGR valve blocked by carbonYes: the EGR valve accumulates carbon with urban use and short journeys, which turns on the engine warning light and causes loss of power. It is one of this engine's most cited faults, documented independently on Alfa Romeo, Fiat and Opel.Repair (garage): €130–€800Appears at around 80,000 km
  4. Medium severityFrequency: CommonEmissions controlParticulate filter (DPF) clogging in urban useOn versions with a particulate filter, urban use with short journeys prevents regeneration from completing and the filter clogs: the warning light comes on, the car enters limp mode and consumption rises. A 30-minute motorway run every two weeks is recommended to avoid it.Repair (garage): €350–€600
  5. Medium severityFrequency: CommonClutchDual-mass flywheel wear on manual gearbox versionsYes: the dual-mass flywheel on manual gearbox versions wears with mileage and is usually replaced together with the clutch. On the Opel Zafira B there are several documented replacements between 105,000 and 195,000 km, one of them with a dealer invoice of around €1,900.Repair: €1,900Appears at around 105,000 km
  6. Low severityFrequency: OccasionalIntakeFaulty air flow meter on the 1.9 JTD / Multijet (loss of power)On the 1.9 JTD and 1.9 CDTI the air flow meter repeatedly appears among ancillary faults: loss of power. It is fixed by replacing the sensor after ruling out air leaks and the EGR.Repair (garage): €100–€300

    With caution

In addition to the EGR valve risk, there are testimonies of a seized turbo in urban use and of a leak at the manifold gasket; no manufacturer campaign to correct them is on record.[1][2]

Faults that affect the 9-5

  1. High severityFrequency: OccasionalInjectionVP44 injection pump and air mass meter failureGerman Wikipedia documents recurring failures of the Bosch VP44 injection pump and the air mass meter in the early years of this engine. An owner testimony for this engine describes the pump being replaced at 192,500 km, at a cost the owner calls «prohibitive».
  2. High severityFrequency: OccasionalTurboSeized or leaking turbochargerGerman Wikipedia documents turbo problems in the early years of the Vectra B. Owner testimonies describe a seized turbo («grippé») in a Vectra C after many short urban journeys, and a leak at the turbo manifold in a Zafira A before 30,000 km.
  3. Medium severityFrequency: CommonEmissions controlClogged or faulty EGR valveAccording to a German used-car buying guide, the EGR valve is the only notable weakness of this engine once it had matured in the Vectra C. In the Zafira A there are several owner testimonies of a faulty EGR valve, one of them before 30,000 km.

The Dutch inspection data point to fluid leaks, leaking exhausts and damaged steering gaiters in model years 1997 to 2005.

Which Saab 9-5 engine is the most reliable?

Among the 2 engines we have documented, none has a «Buy» verdict; the safest option is the 2.0 DTI and 2.2 DTI, with a «With caution» verdict. In addition to the EGR valve risk, there are testimonies of a seized turbo in urban use and of a leak at the manifold gasket; no manufacturer campaign to correct them is on record.[1][2]

What problems does the Saab 9-5 have apart from the engine?

Outside the engine, the first-generation Saab 9-5 has only two official British DVSA recalls documented: the fuel return hose on cars built from 2006 to 2008, and the towing hitch ball joint (2002). The Dutch inspection data point to fluid leaks, leaking exhausts and damaged steering gaiters in model years 1997 to 2005. The most important documented faults are: fuel leak from the return hose (fire risk) (airbags and safety, high severity) and towing hitch ball joint that comes loose (airbags and safety, high severity).[3][4][5]

What faults does the Saab 9-5 have?

The most important by severity and frequency, on the engines we have documented, are: intake manifold flap failure (swirl effect) (1.9 JTD/Multijet and 2.4 JTD, high severity), turbocharger wear or failure (1.9 JTD/Multijet and 2.4 JTD, high severity), VP44 injection pump and air mass meter failure (2.0 DTI and 2.2 DTI, high severity), seized or leaking turbocharger (2.0 DTI and 2.2 DTI, high severity) and EGR valve blocked by carbon (1.9 JTD/Multijet and 2.4 JTD, medium severity).

What is the best year to buy a Saab 9-5?

According to our rating by year, the best are 2001, 2000, 1999 and 2 other years with the same rating (7.9/10); the worst rated is 2006 (6.0/10). Each year's rating counts only the engines sold that year and the faults that affect those units: open each year to see what changes.

Does the Saab 9-5 have recalls?

Yes: we have documented 2 campaigns for the Saab 9-5, such as DVSA R/2008/188: fuel return hose (2009). Check with your VIN at the official service centre whether yours has been done.[3]
