1.6 and 2.0 8v EA827 engine: faults and reliability

Grupo Volkswagen 1.6 and 2.0 8v de gasolina (EA827 and EA113) · Volkswagen, Seat, Škoda and Audi

Simple, naturally aspirated petrol engines that, according to the sources, last a long time with regular maintenance. Gebrauchtwagenberater describes the 8-valve 1.6 as old-fashioned but reliable, and the 102 hp 1.6 MPI as even more reliable than the 1.4 16v. Watch the timing belt with the water pump, coolant leaks, oil consumption (especially on the 2.0) and idle and sensor faults.[1][2][3][4]

Which 1.6 and 2.0 8v EA827 versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

  • 1.6 8v 75 hp (ABU, AEA, AEE, 1F, ALM; 1992-2001)

    1992–2001 · 75 hp · ABU, AEA, AEE, 1F, ALM

    With caution

These are cars aged between 25 and 34 years, and the open reliability sources barely cover them: fiches-auto.fr has just one owner account for the Octavia I with this 75 hp 1.6, which mentions the water pump and an ignition coil at around 207,000 km. There is no basis for saying it is better or worse than the 100-102 hp version, so the same pre-purchase checks apply.[4]

  • 1.6 8v 100-101 hp (AEK, AFT, ADP, AEH, AKL, APF, BAH; 1994-2008)

Gebrauchtwagenberater describes the 8-valve 1.6 of the Golf IV as an old-fashioned but reliable engine that copes well with regular maintenance, with no known problems in models after 2001. On fiches-auto.fr, no engine fault appears in more than one of the 20 owner accounts for the Audi A3 with this 100 hp 1.6.[1][10]

  • 1.6 8v 102 hp (AVU, BFQ, ALZ, BGU, BSE, BSF, CCSA; 2000-2013)

    Buy

Gebrauchtwagenberater describes it in the Octavia II as even more reliable than the 1.4 16v, which it already presents as reliable, and does not single it out for any specific fault. On fiches-auto.fr, the Golf V with this 1.6 has only 4 owner accounts, with one oil case and one sensor case at around 120,000 km.[2][11]

  • 2.0 8v 115-120 hp (2E, ADY, APK, AQY, AZJ and others; 1991-2010)

1991–2010 · 84–120 hp · 2E, ABA, ADY, AGG, AEG, APK, AQY, AZG, AZH, AZJ, AZL, AZM, BBX, ATM, AUZ, ASU, AVA, AAC

    With caution

Gebrauchtwagenberater does not record specific problems with the 2.0 of the Golf IV, but warns of high oil consumption, and fiches-auto.fr cites lambda sensor, catalytic converter and head gasket faults for the 115 hp 2.0 of the Octavia I. Keep an eye on the oil level and the coolant.[1][4]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

Known faults of the 1.6 and 2.0 8v EA827

Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).

  1. 1High severityFrequency: OccasionalTimingTiming belt and water pumpThese engines drive the camshaft with a toothed belt and, on the EA113 evolution, that same belt also drives the water pump. A seized pump or an overdue belt can leave you stranded and, if the belt snaps, can damage the engine.Repair (garage): €400–€700
  2. 2Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalCoolingCoolant leaks: flange and water pumpCoolant leaks from the cylinder head flange and the water pump are reported on the 8-valve 1.6 and 2.0. It is not a widespread fault, but Motor16 warns that a faulty pump makes the engine overheat without warning: check the level and look for traces of fluid.
  3. 3Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalLubricationHigh oil consumptionGebrauchtwagenberater reports high oil consumption on the 2.0 of the Golf IV and relatively high consumption on the petrol León I, without specifying the engine. Fiches-auto.fr adds a case on the 102 hp 1.6. The sources do not identify the responsible part.
  4. 4High severityFrequency: RareCylinder head and blockHead gasketFiches-auto.fr cites the head gasket among the problems of the 115 hp 2.0 of the Octavia I and in 2 of 5 Golf IV owner accounts with the 102 hp 1.6. These are very small samples: if there is coolant loss or overheating, it is worth ruling the gasket out.
  5. 5Low severityFrequency: OccasionalElectronicsRough idle, mass airflow meter and lambda sensorsOn the 8-valve 1.6 and 2.0, fiches-auto.fr cites rough idle caused by a dirty throttle or sensor, and mass airflow meter and lambda sensor faults. These are sensor parts, and one owner says they failed the ITV because of emissions.
  6. 6Low severityFrequency: RareIgnitionIgnition faults: coils and spark plugsFiches-auto.fr warns of ignition problems on the 1.6s of the Octavia I, and the ADAC, according to Gebrauchtwagenberater, concentrates Golf IV faults on the distributor and coil. There are few documented cases specific to these engines.

What the 1.6 and 2.0 8v EA827 is

This page covers the four-cylinder, 8-valve, single overhead camshaft petrol engines of 1.6 and 2.0 litres from the Volkswagen Group, without turbo and with a timing belt. They descend from the EA827, which Audi developed under Ludwig Kraus and which debuted in 1972 in the Audi 80. Its evolution, the EA113 (Wikipedia dates it to 1993 or 1995, depending on the article), keeps the 88 mm bore spacing, drops the intermediate shaft of the original EA827 and drives the water pump from the toothed belt.[5][12]

Scope: the 8-valve 1.6 in three versions (75 hp; 100-101 hp with codes such as AEH, AKL and APF; and 102 hp with AVU, BFQ, ALZ, BGU, BSE and BSF) and the 8-valve 2.0 of 115-120 hp (2E, ADY, APK, AQY, AZJ and others). The model tables for the cars cited (Altea, Golf Plus, Jetta V, Octavia II) list 8 valves for BSE and BSF. The 16-valve 1.6s (AUS, AZD, BCB, BTS), the 1.6 FSI, the 1.4s and the turbo 1.8s belong to other families.[5][8][12][13][14][15][16][17]

Excluded: the 8-valve 1.8 (ABS, ADZ), fitted to the Golf III, the Ibiza II and the Córdoba I, and the BSX natural-gas 2.0 of the Caddy III, because we have found no reliability data specific to them. Also excluded are the AP-1600, AP-1800 and AP-2000 engines from Latin America, which Wikipedia links to the EA827 in the Gol (the Gol, Parati, Saveiro and Santana are not in the catalogue), and the Brazilian Volkswagen Fox, whose 1.0 and 1.6 engines are EA-111, as well as the Ford Galaxy I, whose 115 hp 2.0 is a Ford engine.[18][19][20][21][22][23][24]

The 102 hp (75 kW) 1.6 is the 2000s version: it was fitted from the Golf V and Golf Plus to the León II, the Octavia II and the Audi A3 8P, and was built until 2010-2013. The 115 hp 2.0 was fitted to the Golf IV, the Bora, the Octavia I, the New Beetle, the Passat B5, the Sharan and the Alhambra, among others.[7][8][15][25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32]
