1.7 CRDi vs Skyactiv-D: which engine is more reliable?

According to our risk index, the 1.7 CRDi carries less risk than the Skyactiv-D: 38/100 (moderate risk) versus 55/100 (high risk). The 1.7 CRDi has 2 documented serious faults, the main one being «Injectors that lose calibration with mileage»; the Skyactiv-D has 3 documented serious faults, the main one being «Oil dilution with diesel during DPF regenerations».

Is the 1.7 CRDi reliable?

The 1.7 CRDi (U2 D4FD, 2010-2018) is a reasonably reliable diesel if it is properly maintained, with one specific documented problem in cold weather: power loss and stalling caused by the turbo actuator, the diesel filter and the glow plugs. It also suffers the emissions-system wear (EGR, DPF) typical of its generation, injectors that can lose calibration and, in a particular mileage range, high-pressure pump failures.[1][2][3]

Is the Skyactiv-D reliable?

The Skyactiv-D is a modern and generally reliable diesel, but across its three displacements (1.5, 1.8 and 2.2) it shares oil dilution with diesel fuel during diesel particulate filter regenerations, which means you need to watch the oil level and not stretch oil changes, especially on short journeys; the older 2.2s (2012-2014) also accumulate more turbo and carbon build-up cases.[4][5][6][7]
