1.7 CRDi vs 1.8/2.2 DI-D: which engine is more reliable?
According to our risk index, the 1.7 CRDi carries less risk than the 1.8/2.2 DI-D: 38/100 versus 46/100 (both moderate risk). The 1.7 CRDi has 2 documented serious faults, the main one being «Injectors that lose calibration with mileage»; the 1.8/2.2 DI-D has 3 documented serious faults, the main one being «Clogged particulate filter and oil dilution».
The index (0–100) weights the severity and frequency of the three most serious documented faults. How it is calculated
Is the 1.7 CRDi reliable?
The 1.7 CRDi (U2 D4FD, 2010-2018) is a reasonably reliable diesel if it is properly maintained, with one specific documented problem in cold weather: power loss and stalling caused by the turbo actuator, the diesel filter and the glow plugs. It also suffers the emissions-system wear (EGR, DPF) typical of its generation, injectors that can lose calibration and, in a particular mileage range, high-pressure pump failures.[1][2][3]
See the 5 of the 1.7 CRDi faultsIs the 1.8/2.2 DI-D reliable?
Yes, in general: Mitsubishi's own 1.8 DI-D (4N13) and 2.2 DI-D (4N14) diesels have a reputation for reliability compared with the Volkswagen and PSA engines they replaced in 2010. Their best-documented fault is a clogged particulate filter with oil dilution on short journeys, along with occasional cases of injector, turbo and balance shaft problems. Do not confuse them with the PSA 2.2 HDi that the Outlander used earlier, shared with the C-Crosser and the Peugeot 4007.[4][5][6][7]
