Renault 1.5 dCi (K9K)Urgency: Monitor

Abnormal vibrations or unstable idle in the 1.5 dCi engine: causes

In the 1.5 dCi engine, 2 documented faults may be the cause: premature dual-mass flywheel failure and clutch problems and injector and injector seal failures.[1][2][4]

What to do now

Monitor

If it comes with the engine warning light, ask for a fault code read-out. If not, have the mounts and the dual-mass flywheel checked.

What it means

The engine shakes at idle or sends vibrations through the steering wheel and the body. It can come from worn engine mounts, the dual-mass flywheel, injectors or misfires.

Engine faults that cause it

From most to least important. Under each fault, how the symptom shows up. Check the affected years and versions on each page.

How much it can cost

Depending on the cause, repair at an independent garage ranges from €700[2][3] (premature dual-mass flywheel failure and clutch problems) to €1,300[2][3] (premature dual-mass flywheel failure and clutch problems), including VAT.

Most serious fault among the possible causes: Medium severity

Other common causes: vibrations

Besides the documented faults of the 1.5 dCi, these are the most common causes on any car according to the sources.

  • Combustion fault: spark plugs, coils or cylinders not working[7][8][9][10]Common
  • Worn engine mounts[11][12]Common
  • Rough idle from sensors, air mass meter or intake[7][13][14]Common
  • Dirty or worn injectors, EGR valve or high-pressure pump (diesel)[7]Possible
  • Damaged dual-mass flywheel or worn clutch[12][15]Possible
  • Poor compression or worn cylinders[12]Uncommon

What to check first

  1. Work out when it vibrates: with the car stationary it points to the engine, and from around 100 km/h it usually points to the wheels, according to Carglass. That decides whether you continue with this guide or with the steering wheel and brakes ones.[8]
  2. Rule out what is normal: RACE explains that, if the engine is cold, it is normal for it to vibrate a little until the oil lubricates, and that the speed rises on starting before settling.[13][16]
  3. Watch the rev counter in neutral: if the needle fluctuates illogically or there is jerking on starting, RACE suspects the crankshaft or camshaft sensors.[13]
  4. Ask for a code reading with a diagnostic machine, especially if the engine warning light is on. RACE recommends diagnosing before replacing the air mass meter, and a code such as P0300 indicates a misfire.[10][14]
