Premature turbo failure and intake hoses that come loose on the 1.5 dCi
Why this rating?
High severity: Risk of a serious engine, turbo or gearbox failure.
Frequency occasional: Caradisiac cites failures on the first Clio III 105, on the Scénic III 105/110 and on the Qashqai II 110, and considers them rare or isolated on the Kadjar and Sandero II. fiches-auto attributes most turbo problems of the 110 hp to the hose that disconnects, except on the first versions with a DPF. Autopista also associates more turbo failures with the old 1.5 dCi of the Qashqai.[1][2][3][4][6][7][8]
Symptoms
- Loss of power when a hose from the air filter or the turbo comes off.[9]Less power: other faults that cause it · Monitor
- The engine goes into limp mode when an intake hose disconnects.[9]Limp mode: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
Why it happens
Premature turbo failure on the 105 and 110 hp versions.[1][2][3]
On the first 110 hp versions with a particulate filter, the filter became blocked and ended up damaging the turbo.[4]
Turbo intake hoses that come loose or burst, sometimes repeatedly (Duster I, Qashqai II).[3][4][9]
If it is not repaired: Loss of power or limp mode; if the turbo fails it has to be replaced.[2][9]
Affected cars and years
Mainly 105 and 110 hp. On the first 110 hp with a particulate filter, a blocked filter could end up destroying the turbo; on the Kadjar (from 2015) the cases are much rarer than on earlier models.[4][6]

How much it costs to repair
Includes: Turbo replacement with labour; if only a hose has come off or split, simply replacing it is enough.[4][5]
There are no published prices in Spain for this engine's turbo. As a generic reference, Autopista says that replacing a turbo can cost up to €2,800 (price in Spain). fiches-auto considers the hose failure to be not very serious.
Prices in Spain, including VAT. A workshop hour costs on average €38–66 at independent garages and €77–134 at dealerships in Spain, depending on the region and the brand. How we calculate costs
How to check for it before buying a used car
- On the test drive, accelerate hard in an intermediate gear: the thrust should be progressive, with no cutting out or limp mode.[9]
- Inspect the turbo intake hoses for cracks or loose clamps.[3][9]
- Ask whether the turbo has been replaced and, on a 110 hp with the first DPFs, about the condition of the particulate filter.[4]

What owners say
Frequently asked questions
Why does my 1.5 dCi suddenly lose power?
A common cause on this engine is an intake or turbo hose coming off or bursting, which can trigger limp mode. If the hose is fine, the turbo needs checking.[3][4][9]
Does the 1.5 dCi turbo fail often?
It is not the norm, but Caradisiac documents premature failures on the 105 and 110 hp, on the Qashqai II sometimes before 80,000 km. On more recent models such as the Kadjar or Sandero II the cases are rare.[3][6][7]
How much does it cost to replace the turbo?
There are no published prices for this engine in Spain. Autopista gives up to €2,800 as a general reference for a turbo replacement.[5]

Other 1.5 dCi faults
- Critical severityFrequency: CommonLubricationWear and seizure of the big-end bearingsThe Euro 3 and Euro 4 1.5 dCi engines (approx. 2001-2010), especially the 100 and 105/106 hp, have fragile big-end bearings that can seize and wreck the engine. Renault went as far as paying up to 90% of the repair, with a limit of 7 years and 180,000 km.
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalTimingPremature timing belt failureOn the 85, 105 and 110 hp 1.5 dCi engines built up to late 2010, especially in the Mégane III and Scénic III, the timing belt could break early, sometimes before 50,000 km, and damage the engine. Renault opened a workshop action in 2013.
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalInjectionDelphi high-pressure pump that sheds filings and damages the injectionOn the first 1.5 dCi engines (up to approx. 2010), especially the versions with Delphi injection of 65, 70 and 85 hp, the high-pressure pump can shed iron filings that contaminate the whole circuit and destroy the injectors. The pump, injectors and rail all have to be replaced.Appears at around 60,000 km
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonEmissions controlBlocked EGR valve on the early 1.5 dCiThe EGR valve often gets dirty and fails on the 65, 80 and 100 hp 1.5 dCi engines from before 2007; on later versions it is much less common. Cleaning it is often enough.
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalClutchPremature dual-mass flywheel failure and clutch problemsThe 105 and 110 hp 1.5 dCi engines can break the dual-mass flywheel early, sometimes before 40,000 km. It warns you with vibrations at idle and metallic noises, and forces you to replace the clutch and flywheel assembly.Repair (garage): €700–€1,300
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalInjectionInjector and injector seal failuresThe 1.5 dCi injectors, or their seals, can fail early, especially on the 110 hp, causing rough running, jerking or hard starting. Replacing the affected injector is usually enough; Caradisiac still reports cases on the Kadjar and Duster II.
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalEmissions controlNOx trap and AdBlue system on the Euro 6 1.5 dCiThe 2015 Euro 6b 1.5 dCi engines had a badly calibrated NOx trap that Renault corrected with recall campaigns. On the Blue dCi (from 2018), the AdBlue pump, tank or injector can fail, with an emissions warning and even the car locked out with a full tank.
More faults with the turbo on other engines and cars
- High severityFrequency: Very frequent1.6 HDiTurbo failure through lack of lubrication (carbon deposits and union filter)On the 16-valve 1.6 HDi/TDCi engines (2004-2011) the turbo can seize because carbon deposits from the oil clog the mesh filter in the union that feeds it. It is a serious, repeat fault: if only the turbo is replaced without cleaning the circuit, it fails again.Repair (garage): €700–€1,050
- High severityFrequency: Very frequent2.0 Ingenium diéselTurbocharger failureYes: according to several sources, the turbo is the component that causes the most faults on the 2.0 Ingenium diesel. It fails across a very wide mileage range (from around 35,000 to over 140,000 km) and, if it breaks up inside, it can send oil or metal into the engine and destroy it.Repair (garage): €2,600–€3,000Appears at around 35,000 km
- High severityFrequency: CommonBMW N47Turbo and wastegate valve failureThe N47's turbo does not usually fail from general wear, but because of failure of the wastegate valve, which regulates boost and can seize or lose adjustment, sending fuel consumption soaring; oil leaks from the turbo itself are also common.Repair (garage): €900–€1,800
- High severityFrequency: CommonOM651Variable-geometry turbo failure and its pneumatic actuatorThe OM651's variable-geometry turbo tends to fail at the pneumatic actuator (cracks, loss of calibration) before the turbo itself. Symptoms range from a gradual loss of power to permanent limp mode, with whistling or smoke if the problem progresses.Repair (garage): €500–€3,000
- High severityFrequency: Common1.6 dCiPremature turbocharger failure or breakageThe 1.6 dCi turbo fails fairly often, sometimes at low mileage: fiches-auto documents failures between 23,000 and 113,000 km in the Kadjar, Qashqai II, X-Trail III and Espace V, with loss of power and, in several cases, the manufacturer refusing to cover the cost out of warranty.Repair (garage): €3,000
- High severityFrequency: Common2.0 HDiVariable-geometry turbo failures (actuator, sensors and clogging)On the 107/110 hp and, above all, 136-140 hp 2.0 HDi, the variable-geometry turbo fails relatively often: sometimes it is the whole turbo, but often it is the actuator, sensors or hoses, with loss of power and limp mode.
