Volkswagen 1.6 TDI (EA189 and EA288)Particulate filter (DPF/FAP)
Clogged particulate filter (DPF) on the 1.6 TDI
Why this rating?
Medium severity: It can leave you stranded or get worse if ignored, without destroying the engine.
Frequency common: It is a widespread problem in urban use of any diesel with a particulate filter since the Euro 5 standard (2009), this engine included; there are no incidence figures specific to the 1.6 TDI.[1]
Symptoms
- The particulate filter warning light comes on when the accumulated soot exceeds the limit without a regeneration having been completed.[2]DPF warning light: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
- If the warning is ignored, the ECU may activate limp mode with a loss of power to protect the engine.[2]Limp mode: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
Why it happens
Short urban trips at low revs do not heat the exhaust enough (around 350-450 °C) to burn off the accumulated soot, and automatic regeneration is interrupted.[1]
If it is not repaired: A heavily saturated filter requires a forced regeneration at the workshop or, if it is already damaged, replacement.[2]
Affected cars and years
The particulate filter has been mandatory since the Euro 5 standard (2009) and is fitted to the whole production run of this engine, EA189 and EA288.[1]

How much it costs to repair
Includes: Cleaning by ultrasonic bath and forced regeneration, or complete replacement of the filter, including labour.[1][2]
Autofácil puts cleaning at around €200 (in Spain) and recommends it before replacing the filter. Diariomotor puts a new filter at €500-600 up to more than €2,000, and complete replacement can reach €3,000 depending on the vehicle.
Prices in Spain, including VAT. A workshop hour costs on average €38–66 at independent garages and €77–134 at dealerships in Spain, depending on the region and the brand. How we calculate costs

Parts needed
The part or kit that fixes this fault, according to the sources.
Particulate filter 1.6 TDI[1]
Replaced when cleaning is no longer enough to bring down the soot load.
Indicative price of the part: €500–€2,000

How to prevent it
- Take road trips from time to time so that the filter regenerates on its own.[1]
Recalls, campaigns and claims
As of 26 September 2026, we have no record of recalls, campaigns or extended manufacturer warranties for this fault. Check with an official dealer using the chassis (VIN) number: they will tell you whether the car has any outstanding campaign.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to clean or replace the 1.6 TDI particulate filter?
Cleaning costs around €200 (in Spain). A new filter ranges from about €500-600 to more than €2,000, and replacing it including labour can reach €3,000.[1][2]
Why does the filter clog up if I only drive in town?
The exhaust does not reach the 350-450 °C needed to burn off the soot, so automatic regeneration is not completed.[1]
What happens if I keep driving with the DPF warning light on?
The car may activate limp mode with a loss of power to protect the engine.[2]

Other 1.6 TDI faults
- Medium severityFrequency: Very frequentEmissions controlManipulated emissions software (dieselgate) and air flow stabiliserThe 1.6 TDI EA189 engines (2009-2015, 75-105 hp) carried software that reduced exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) outside homologation tests. Unlike the 2.0 TDI, Volkswagen corrects this engine with the software update plus the fitting of an air flow stabiliser.Repair: €0
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalTimingTiming belt and water pumpThe 1.6 TDI drives its timing with a toothed belt. It is common for the water pump to be changed together with the kit: if the pump seizes first, it can drag the belt with it, with a risk of breakage and serious cylinder head damage.Repair (garage): €400–€1,500
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalTurboVariable-geometry turbo seized or with playThe variable-geometry turbo on the 1.6 TDI EA189 can seize because of carbon deposits or wear on the shaft. The engine loses power, whistles or emits bluish smoke, and replacing the turbo costs around €1,000 if there is no additional damage.Repair (garage): €1,000
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonEmissions controlEGR valve clogged with carbon depositsThe EGR valve accumulates carbon deposits, especially on short urban trips, until it seizes and no longer seals or opens precisely. The engine loses power and jerks; cleaning the valve costs considerably less than replacing it.Repair (garage): €100–€1,000
More faults with the particulate filter on other engines and cars
- High severityFrequency: Very frequentOM651EGR and particulate filter clogging, and emissions software updatesThe particulate filter and EGR clog up with short journeys, as on any diesel with these systems. In addition, Germany's KBA required software updates on several models with this engine between 2018 and 2021 because of a function that reduced EGR outside a temperature range.Repair (garage): €800–€2,500
- High severityFrequency: Common1.3 MultijetIncomplete particulate filter regenerations and oil dilutionIn heavy urban use, with short journeys that do not let the particulate filter regeneration finish, unburnt diesel passes into the sump and dilutes the oil; the level can rise on the dipstick and the oil loses its ability to lubricate. Repeated many times, it speeds up engine wear.
- High severityFrequency: Common2.0 HDiDPF clogging on additive-type systems (Eolys/cerine)The additive-type diesel particulate filter (DPF) of the 2.0 HDi clogs relatively easily on short journeys, especially on the 107/110 and 136-140 hp versions. The anti-pollution warning light comes on and, if ignored, the car loses power and may end up needing a new DPF.
- High severityFrequency: Common1.6 and 2.0 MultiJet IISaturated diesel particulate filter (DPF) from incomplete regenerationsIn urban use with short journeys, the particulate filter does not manage to complete its regeneration and becomes saturated; garages recommend a weekly motorway run to avoid it. The filter itself is among the weak points flagged in the 1.6 and 2.0 MultiJet II after a certain mileage.
- High severityFrequency: Common2.0 Ingenium diéselFuel dilution of the oil linked to particulate filter regenerationsYes: on short trips and in urban use, the Ingenium diesel's particulate filter does not always complete regeneration, and some of the diesel injected to burn off the soot ends up mixing with the engine oil, which reduces its ability to lubricate.
- High severityFrequency: CommonMZR-CDOil dilution from leaking injector seals and DPF regenerationsOn the 2.0 and 2.2 MZR-CD, injector seals that age badly and incomplete particulate filter regenerations on short journeys can let unburnt diesel into the sump, diluting the oil and leaving the engine with less lubrication.
