PSA/Ford 2.0 HDi, BlueHDi and TDCi (DW10)Urgency: Garage soon

AdBlue system warning in the 2.0 HDi engine: causes

In the 2.0 HDi engine, 1 documented fault may be the cause: AdBlue tank crystallisation and failures (BlueHDi).[1]

What to do now

Garage soon

If the tank is full and the warning persists, the problem lies with the system. Go to a garage before the countdown ends and keep your receipts in case the fault is covered by a manufacturer campaign.

What it means

Diesels with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) use AdBlue to cut NOx emissions. A warning with a countdown ("engine will not restart in X km") indicates a low level or a fault in the AdBlue tank, pump, heater or injector. When the countdown reaches zero, the car will not start again.

Engine faults that cause it

From most to least important. Under each fault, how the symptom shows up. Check the affected years and versions on each page.

How much it can cost

Depending on the cause, repair at an independent garage ranges from €800[1][2][3] (AdBlue tank crystallisation and failures (BlueHDi)) to €1,200[1][2][3] (AdBlue tank crystallisation and failures (BlueHDi)), including VAT.

Most serious fault among the possible causes: Medium severity

Other common causes: adBlue warning

Besides the documented faults of the 2.0 HDi, these are the most common causes on any car according to the sources.

  • Low AdBlue level[4][5][6]Common
  • Urea crystals in the injector, the lines or the tank[4][6][7]Common
  • Faulty pump, heater or tank[6][7]Possible
  • Faulty level or NOx sensors[5][6][7]Possible
  • Dosing fault due to low pressure in the system[8]Possible
  • Factory-defective AdBlue tank on Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Opel diesels[1][9][10]Possible

What to check first

  1. Note the message that appears and, if there is a countdown, the kilometres it shows: the warning starts in yellow or orange and becomes more insistent as they drop.[4][5]
  2. Check that AdBlue really is low and top up with approved product (ISO 22241 standard). Never put it in the fuel tank.[5][7]
  3. After topping up, wait a few minutes, switch the ignition on several times or start the engine and drive for a while. If the level was very low, add enough: with less than 4 or 5 litres the sensor may not register the change.[4][5][6][11]
  4. If the warning stays on, or there is a countdown with the tank full, ask for a diagnosis with code reading before it reaches zero. Do not tamper with or disable the system.[5][8]
