2.0 TSI/TFSI Gen 3B / evo, with added indirect injection (2016 onwards, 190-320 hp) engine: faults and reliability
What changes in this version
Adds a second, indirect injection circuit (in the manifold) alongside direct injection, mainly to reduce consumption and emissions, with the added effect of cleaning the intake valves somewhat. The high-performance versions reach 300-320 hp in the Golf GTI Clubsport, the Seat León Cupra, the Cupra Ateca/Formentor or the Audi TTS/S3.[1][3]
Engine codes of this version: CHHA, DKFA, DLBA, CJXE, CJXA, CJXB.
Faults of the CHHA engine
The documented engine faults that affect this version and its years, from most to least important.
- 1High severityFrequency: CommonLubricationHigh oil consumptionIt is the most repeated complaint on first-batch EA888s (2008-2012) and still appears, to a lesser extent, in later generations. The engine needs topping up between services with no visible leak or obvious smoke at first.Repair (garage): €1,500–€4,000
- 2Medium severityFrequency: CommonCoolingThermostat housing leak and water pump failureSince Volkswagen integrated the water pump impeller into the thermostat housing, this plastic part leaks coolant over time; on the oldest units, with a separate belt-driven pump, failures of the pump itself are also documented.
- 3Low severityFrequency: OccasionalLubricationPCV valve (crankcase ventilation) failureThe PCV valve returns to the intake manifold the oil and combustion vapours that build up in the crankcase. If it sticks closed or open, it causes a rough idle, misfires or oil leaks from the seals.Repair (garage): €60–€250

Frequently asked questions
Is the CHHA engine reliable?
Our verdict is “Buy”. The added indirect injection reduces the carbon build-up problem and the documented oil consumption is lower. It is still worth checking the thermostat housing/water pump and the PCV valve, which are common to the whole family.[1][2][3]
What faults does the CHHA engine have?
The documented ones that affect this version, by importance: high oil consumption (high severity), thermostat housing leak and water pump failure (medium severity) and PCV valve (crankcase ventilation) failure (low severity).
Which cars use the CHHA engine?
Volkswagen Golf VII (2012–2020), Volkswagen Golf VIII (since 2019), Volkswagen Passat B8 (2014–2023), Volkswagen Tiguan II (2016–2024), Volkswagen T-Roc (since 2017), Volkswagen Arteon (2017–2023), Seat León III (2012–2020), Seat Ateca (since 2016), Cupra Ateca (2018–2020) and Cupra Formentor (since 2020), among 18 others.[1][4][5][6][7]
