BMW M43 (1.6, 1.8 and 1.9 de gasolina, 8 válvulas)Cooling
Failure of the plastic parts in the cooling system on the M43 1.6, 1.8 and 1.9
Why this rating?
High severity: Risk of a serious engine, turbo or gearbox failure.
Frequency common: Four independent sources place it among the first faults of the M43: Autohints calls it the most common, Enginescope and CarWiki cover it for the whole engine, and the Z3 guide from Euro Premium Parts says leaks are common from 80,000 miles (about 129,000 km). None provides fleet statistics.[1][2][3][4]
Symptoms
- Coolant leaks from the plastic parts; the Euro Premium Parts Z3 guide describes them as common from 80,000 miles.[2][4]Coolant leak: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
- The temperature gauge rises; Autohints advises switching the engine off if it goes above halfway.[2][3]Overheating: other faults that cause it · As soon as possible
Why it happens
With heat cycling, the expansion tank, water pump, thermostat, radiator, flanges and hoses become brittle and crack, according to Enginescope and CarWiki; Autohints specifically cites the plastic coolant flanges.[1][2][3]
The viscous fan can fail and cause overheating, according to Autohints.[3]
The thermostat and its housing appear among the parts that fail (Enginescope), and owners of the E46 316i/318i describe housings leaking at the flange and at the thermostat’s electrical connector on a forum.[2][5]
If it is not repaired: Enginescope stresses that overheating must be avoided. CarWiki lists the cylinder head gasket among the problems of high-mileage engines, with coolant consumption, white smoke and milky oil as symptoms.[1][2]
Affected cars and years
The sources describe it for the M43 in general; Autohints documents it on the 1.8 and Euro Premium Parts on the Z3 1.8 (M43B18).[3][4]

How much it costs to repair
Includes: Renewal of the circuit: expansion tank, thermostat, water pump, radiator, flanges and hoses, with labour.[4]
The Euro Premium Parts Z3 guide gives $300-600 in parts to renew the circuit; we have not found a published quote in Spain.
Prices in Spain, including VAT. A workshop hour costs on average €38–66 at independent garages and €77–134 at dealerships in Spain, depending on the region and the brand. How we calculate costs
How to check for it before buying a used car
- Ask for the invoice for the cooling circuit renewal. Autohints advises changing the auxiliary belt, tensioner, water pump and thermostat as a precaution every 80,000-100,000 km.[3]
- Check the coolant level with the engine cold, the expansion tank and the plastic flanges, and look for coolant residue around the pump and the thermostat.[2][3]

How to prevent it
- Change the water pump, thermostat, auxiliary belt and tensioner as a precaution every 80,000-100,000 km, as Autohints advises.[3]

Frequently asked questions
What usually fails in the cooling system of a BMW 316i or 318i with the M43 engine?
The plastic parts: expansion tank, water pump, thermostat, radiator and flanges, which crack with age. Autohints adds the viscous fan.[1][2][3]

Other M43 1.6, 1.8 and 1.9 faults
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalIntakeDISA intake manifold valve with play and noiseThe DISA intake manifold flap on the M43 can develop play and rattle. Autohints warns that if it is left alone, broken pieces can end up in the intake; Enginescope says it is fixed with a repair kit or a new valve.
- Low severityFrequency: CommonLubricationOil leaks from gaskets (rocker cover, front cover and crankcase breather)Over the years the M43’s gaskets harden and seep oil: the rocker cover gasket, the filter housing, the front cover (especially on the M43TU) and the crankcase breather valve. It is a common fault and, according to the sources, a minor one.
- Low severityFrequency: OccasionalIntakeRough idle from the idle valve, intake boot or air mass meterThe M43’s idle becomes rough, or the engine stalls, when the idle control valve clogs with carbon, the rubber boot between the air mass meter and the manifold cracks (letting in false air), or the air mass meter fails. Cleaning the valve is usually enough.
- Low severityFrequency: OccasionalIgnitionMisfires from worn coils, leads and spark plugsOn a high-mileage M43 the spark plugs, leads and ignition coil wear and cause rough running, judder and occasional misfires. These are wear items that are renewed as part of maintenance.
