CVT Jatco JF011E gearbox: faults and reliability
Jatco JF011E / CVT2 (RE0F10A; Xtronic de Nissan, X-Tronic de Renault, INVECS-III de Mitsubishi) · Nissan, Renault, Mitsubishi, Peugeot, Citroën and Jeep
The Jatco JF011E CVT (Nissan’s Xtronic, Renault’s X-Tronic, Mitsubishi’s INVECS-III) has weak points well described by workshops and the technical press: wear of the pump and its valves, bearings that hum and, according to some sources, the belt and pulleys. Nissan fixed a possible belt slip in the first-generation Qashqai and X-Trail with software.[1][2][3][4]

Jatco JF011E / CVT2 (CVT with torque converter)
since 2002 · JF011E, RE0F10A, CVT2
Workshops and the technical press describe repeated weak points (pump and valves, bearings, belt), and Renault and Nissan only ask for the oil to be checked during the warranty. Check the gearbox history and do a long test drive before buying.[1][2][3]
Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.
Known faults of the CVT Jatco JF011E
Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).
- 1High severityFrequency: CommonTransmissionPressure loss from pump and valve wearWith use, the valve that regulates oil pressure in the pump wears; pressure falls and the gearbox slips, judders or is slow to engage D and R. Workshops and the technical press identify it as the main cause of faults in this type of CVT.
- 2High severityFrequency: CommonTransmissionHum from worn CVT bearingsA characteristic hum that changes with speed usually points to worn bearings on the gearbox shafts; zr.ru cites it as the most common fault of the JF011E, and GEARS Magazine warns that a broken bearing can lock the pulleys.
- 3High severityFrequency: OccasionalTransmissionWear of the metal belt and pulleysAuto.ru places the main weak point of the JF011E in the metal belt: it stretches at around 100,000 km and rarely passes 150,000 km; zr.ru adds that the sideways wear of the belt damages the pulleys. GEARS Magazine, by contrast, says many belts can be reused.Appears at around 100,000 km
- 4Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalTransmissionNissan 2013 campaign for possible belt slip (Qashqai and X-Trail)In November 2013 Nissan launched a service campaign for the Qashqai (2006-2012) and X-Trail (2006-2011) with CVT: under high load and on a slippery or poor surface the belt could slip for an instant and, if it repeated, wear. The fix was to reprogramme the gearbox control unit.
- 5Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalTransmissionCVT overheating and gearbox oil coolerIf the gearbox’s auxiliary radiator clogs with dirt, or the Qashqai I’s oil cooler starts to leak, the CVT overheats: zr.ru describes a warning on the dashboard and a switch to limp mode, and a German guide warns that the leak can end in gearbox failure.

What the CVT Jatco JF011E is
The JF011E is a continuously variable transmission (CVT) from Jatco, Nissan’s transmission company, launched in 2002. According to FenderBender, it has a lock-up torque converter and the forward and reverse clutch in front of the pulleys, and it is called JF011E in Dodge and Jeep, RE0F10A at Nissan and has another code at Mitsubishi; in the Jeep Compass Wikipedia calls it CVT2.[2][5][6]
It is the CVT of the SUVs and mid-size saloons of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance in the second half of the 2000s: Nissan calls it Xtronic and Renault X-Tronic, and Mitsubishi’s CVT is known as INVECS-III. Zr.ru and Auto.ru cite it in the Nissan Qashqai and X-Trail, the Renault Koleos, Mégane, Scénic and Fluence, the Mitsubishi Lancer and Outlander, the Citroën C-Crosser and the Jeep Compass.[1][7][8]
This entry deals with first-generation cars and their twins. The Qashqai II, X-Trail III, Koleos II, Juke, Pulsar, Note and Micra, with the JF015E and JF016E/JF017E gearboxes, have their own entry (‘CVT Xtronic’) and are not repeated here. FenderBender says the JF015E replaced the JF011E in the smaller applications.[2]
Zr.ru reminds that the oil must be CVT-specific (Nissan NS-2, Renault Elfmatic CVT, Mitsubishi DiaQueen CVT-J1): Renault and Nissan only ask for the level and condition to be checked during the 100,000 km warranty, while Mitsubishi asks for it to be changed at 75,000 km.[1]

Jatco JF011E / CVT2 (CVT with torque converter)
Jatco’s first CVT with the forward and reverse clutch in front of the pulleys and a lock-up torque converter; it was introduced in 2002. The JF015E (CVT7) gradually replaced it in compact cars, while the Alliance’s mid-size SUVs moved later to the JF016E/JF017E, which has its own file on MotorFiable.[2][5]
