M270/M274 engine: faults and reliability
Mercedes-Benz M270/M274 (1.6/2.0 turbo gasolina) · Mercedes-Benz
The M270 (transverse, front-wheel drive) and the M274 (longitudinal, rear-wheel drive) are the family of turbocharged, direct-injection 4-cylinder engines that Mercedes-Benz has fitted since 2011 in 1.6 and 2.0 litres. They are generally solid engines —the timing chain no longer gives trouble— but with documented faults: camshaft breakage caused by a defective weld (2015) and, on the M274, oil leaking from the camshaft adjuster into the connector.[1][2][3]
Which M270/M274 versions should you buy?
Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.
- With caution
2011–2020 · 102–156 hp · M270 DE16
It shares the weak points documented for the M270 in general —possible camshaft breakage on 2015 units because of a defective weld—, with the sources not identifying a pattern specific to this displacement compared with the 2.0-litre.[3]

2012–2020 · 156–218 hp · M270 DE20
It shares the weak points documented for the M270 in general —possible camshaft breakage on 2015 units because of a defective weld—, with the sources not identifying a pattern specific to this displacement compared with the 1.6-litre.[3]
- With caution
2013–2023 · 156–245 hp · M274 DE20
It is the variant with the two most specific problems documented for this engine family: possible camshaft breakage on 2015 units and oil leaking from the camshaft adjuster into the electrical connector over the years. These are known faults but they need not stop you buying if you check for them first.[2][3]
Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.
Known faults of the M270/M274
Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).
- 1Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalTimingCamshaft breakage due to a defective weld (2015 units)Yes: some M270 and M274 engines built in 2015 can suffer a camshaft breaking because of a poorly executed factory weld, with a risk of engine damage. It affects specific units from that year across several models, not the whole production run.
- 2Medium severityFrequency: CommonTimingOil leaking from the camshaft adjuster into the electrical connector (M274)Yes: on the M274, the camshaft adjuster solenoids can lose their seal over the years and let oil wick up to the connector and the wiring harness, potentially reaching the ECU. It is fixed relatively cheaply with a specific repair cable.
- 3Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalCoolingCoolant leaks: thermostat and expansion tankYes: the M270/M274 thermostat can fail and trigger code P0128, and on the M270 the expansion tank can lose its seal over the years. Both are described as occasional faults of moderate cost, not as a serious systematic fault.
- 4Low severityFrequency: CommonEmissions controlNOx sensor failure (code P2200) on the M274Yes: the M274 can throw fault code P2200 because of a NOx sensor failure, a component of the emissions control system. A German specialist workshop describes it as a frequent fault, with a repair cost of between €100 and €500.Repair (garage): €100–€500
- 5Medium severityFrequency: RareTimingTiming chain and tensioner: a strong point compared with earlier enginesGenerally no: unlike earlier Mercedes engines, the M270/M274 timing chain is not a common source of faults. The specialist workshops consulted agree that it hardly gives any trouble now, with only isolated cases cited online.

What the M270/M274 is
The M270 and the M274 are families of inline four-cylinder engines, turbocharged and with direct petrol injection (BlueDIRECT), which Mercedes-Benz introduced from 2011 to replace earlier generations of four-cylinder engines. The M270 is mounted transversely, for front-wheel-drive models; the M274 longitudinally, for rear- or all-wheel-drive ones. Both share an architecture: aluminium block and cylinder head, twin overhead camshafts with adjusters, chain-driven timing and, in the lower-output versions, CAMTRONIC variable valve lift technology.[1][4]
They were built in two displacements: 1.6 litres (1,595 cc), almost always reserved for entry-level and mid-range versions, and 2.0 litres (1,991 cc) for the more powerful ones. Depending on the version, documented output ranges from about 102 hp to 245 hp, with torque of 180 to 370 Nm; the exact output and designation vary by model, market and year of manufacture.[1]
The M270 powers the A-Class (W176), the B-Class (W246), the CLA (C117) and the GLA (X156). The M274 powers the C-Class (W205); the E-Class, first the W212 after the 2013 facelift —which replaced the 1.8 turbo M271— and then the W213; the GLC (X253); and the SLC (R172), successor to the SLK.[1][5][6][7][8][9]
The US magazine WardsAuto included the M274 2.0 turbo in its list of the 10 Best Engines of 2017. Outside Mercedes-Benz, related variants of this family have also been used in Infiniti models, the result of the technology agreement between Daimler and the Renault-Nissan Alliance.[1]
