3.0 Di ZD30 engine: faults and reliability
Nissan ZD30 3.0 Di / DDTi (Renault Master 3.0 dCi ZD3) · Nissan and Renault
The 3.0 Di (ZD30) fitted to the Patrol GR and the Terrano II had, in its first units, a lubrication fault that burned pistons, and Nissan increased the oil capacity in 2000. Australian press still reports burnt pistons on later cars, while the British press of 2005 praises its reliability: it is worth checking the service history.[1][2][3][4]
Which 3.0 Di ZD30 versions should you buy?
Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.
- With caution
3.0 Di 158 hp (ZD30DDTi, Patrol GR, 2000-2004)
2000–2004 · 158 hp · ZD30DDTi
Patrols from the early years are worth buying if there is proof that they received the oil correction and were well maintained: Nissan revised the oil capacity in 2000 and burnt pistons are documented, although Auto Express (2005) rated the diesels as very reliable.[1][2][4]
- With caution
3.0 Di 160 hp (ZD30DDTi, Patrol GR, 2004-2010)
2004–2010 · 160 hp · ZD30DDTi
The sources consider the turbo problems fixed by the redesign, but CarsGuide (2009) could not confirm that later Patrols were free of burnt pistons; it is worth verifying the maintenance.[8][9]
- With caution
3.0 Di 154 hp (ZD30DDTi, Terrano II, 2002-2006)
2002–2006 · 154 hp · ZD30DDTi
We have not found sources on faults specific to the 3.0 Di in the Terrano II. RAC says the Terrano II has a reputation for not breaking down, and AUTO BILD (2002) reports that expensive engine failures are almost absent, but that survey covers the 2.4 and 2.7, not the 3.0.[10][11]
- With caution
3.0 dCi 136-156 hp (ZD3, Renault Master II, from 2003)
since 2003 · 136–156 hp · ZD3
It is a derivative of the ZD30 and we have not found sources on its reliability; it is worth checking the maintenance history and not extrapolating the Patrol's faults without confirmation.[12][13]
Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.
Known faults of the 3.0 Di ZD30
Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).
- 1Critical severityFrequency: CommonCylinder head and blockBurnt or perforated pistons from insufficient lubricationIn the 3.0 Di of the Patrol, mainly in the first units from 2000, the pistons (almost always number 3 or 4) can burn or perforate and force an engine rebuild. Nissan increased the oil capacity; the Australian press still reports cases on later cars.
- 2High severityFrequency: OccasionalTurboVariable-geometry turbo stuck and overpressure spikesThe ZD30's variable-geometry turbo is a documented weak point: Wikipedia says the problems with that geometry were resolved with the 2005 Patrol redesign, and a turbo manufacturer describes vanes stuck by soot and pressure spikes. These spikes are also cited as a possible cause of melted pistons.

What the 3.0 Di ZD30 is
The ZD30 is a four-cylinder in-line diesel of 2,953 cm³ (96 x 102 mm), with an aluminium cylinder head, twin overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. According to Wikipedia, the first generation of the ZD30DDTi used a VP44 rotary injection pump and an intercooler, and its timing drive combines gears and a chain.[5]
In the register it is fitted to the Patrol GR (Y61) from May 2000, with 158 hp and 160 hp from October 2004; to the Terrano II from spring 2002, with 154 hp taken from the Patrol; and to the Renault Master II, which from the autumn 2003 redesign uses a 3.0 dCi of Nissan origin (ZD3) derived from the ZD30.[6][7][10][12][13][14]
Sources are mixed: AUTO BILD reported that Nissan recalled the engine in 2000 for insufficient oil supply, which gave it a poor reputation, and Auto Express (2005) called the Patrol's diesels ultra-reliable, while CarsGuide cites burnt pistons in the 3.0 between 2004 and 2020.[1][2][4][15]

What changed between versions
2000–2004
3.0 Di 158 hp (ZD30DDTi, Patrol GR, 2000-2004)
The 3.0 Di replaced the 2.8 TD in the Patrol GR in May 2000, with 158 hp (116 kW) and 354 Nm. The British press in 2005 recommended Patrols built after the December 2002 redesign.[4][6][7]
2002–2006
3.0 Di 154 hp (ZD30DDTi, Terrano II, 2002-2006)
In spring 2002 the Terrano II received the 154 hp 3.0 Di taken from the Patrol, alongside the 2.7 TDi; the 2.4-litre petrol was withdrawn that year.[10][11][14]
since 2003
3.0 dCi 136-156 hp (ZD3, Renault Master II, from 2003)
In the autumn 2003 redesign the Master II received a 3.0 dCi of Nissan origin, derived from the ZD30 (code ZD3), with 136 hp (100 kW) according to German Wikipedia and 136 or 156 hp according to French Wikipedia.[12][13][16]
2004–2010
3.0 Di 160 hp (ZD30DDTi, Patrol GR, 2004-2010)
From October 2004 the 3.0 Di rises to 160 hp and 380 Nm; German Wikipedia attributes this update to common rail injection. English Wikipedia says the variable-geometry turbo problems were resolved with the 2005 Patrol redesign.[6][7][8]
