1.9 D (XUD and DW8) engine: faults and reliability

PSA 1.8 D and 1.9 D de inyección indirecta (XUD7, XUD9 and DW8) · Peugeot and Citroën

Simple, long-lived indirect-injection diesels with uncommon faults. The points to watch are the cylinder head gasket, the connecting rod on the 1996-1999 1.9 TD (rare but destructive), the accessory belt on cars built up to mid-1999, and oil or injection pump leaks at high mileage.[1][2][3][4]

Which 1.9 D (XUD and DW8) versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

  • 1.8 D 58-60 hp (XUD7, until 2000)

    1984–2000 · 58–60 hp · XUD7, A9A

    With caution

Very little published data exists on this engine: fiches-auto records only two reviews of the Partner 1.8 D. It shares its architecture with the 1.9 D, so the same points to watch apply (cylinder head gasket, oil leaks, injection pump).[5][9]

  • 1.9 D 68-71 hp (XUD9 A: D9B and DJY, 1994-2000)

    1994–2000 · 68–71 hp · XUD9A, D9B, DJY

    With caution

Sources present it as a durable engine with a few points to watch: the cylinder head gasket in the early 306s, the accessory belt in 1998-1999 cars, and oil or injection pump leaks at high mileage. Buy it after checking those points.[1][2][4][10]

  • 1.9 SD 75 hp and 1.9 TD 90-92 hp (XUD9 SD and XUD9 TE, 1994-2000)

    1994–2000 · 75–92 hp · XUD9SD, DHW, XUD9BSD, DHV, XUD9TE, D8A, DHY

    With caution

Caradisiac warns of a rare but destructive risk of connecting rod failure with no prior warning in the 1996-1999 1.9 TD, and of the accessory belt in 1998-1999 cars. If the car has already passed that window without incident, the other points to watch match those of the naturally aspirated 1.9 D.[1][2][3]

  • 1.9 D 69-72 hp (DW8: WJY, WJZ and DW8B, 1999-2005)

    1999–2005 · 69–72 hp · DW8, WJY, WJZ, DW8B

    With caution

There is little DW8-specific data: on fiches-auto the Berlingo 1.9 D 70 has 7 reviews on consumption or oil leaks and 5 on the timing system out of 54, and Caradisiac flags the risk of the accessory belt breaking on 1999 Berlingos.[10][11]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

Known faults of the 1.9 D (XUD and DW8)

Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).

  1. 1High severityFrequency: OccasionalCylinder head and blockDamaged cylinder head gasket and cylinder head on the 1.9 D and TDCaradisiac cites occasional cylinder head gasket failures, and sometimes cylinder head failures, from 100,000 km on the 1.9 D and TD of the early 306s, and rare cases on the 406 1.9 TD up to July 1997. Owners place them between 190,000 and 250,000 km.
  2. 2Critical severityFrequency: RareCylinder head and blockConnecting rod failure without warning in the 1.9 TD (XUD9 TE)Caradisiac warns of a connecting rod failure risk, with no prior sign and from 70,000 km, in the 1.9 TD built up to July 1999 (306 from July 1996 to May 1999, Xsara up to July 1999). It is rare, but it destroys the engine.
  3. 3Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalOtherAccessory belt failure in the 1998-1999 dieselsCaradisiac cites an accessory belt failure risk on the 1.9 D Xsara built up to July 1999 (mainly from September to December 1998) and on the 1999 Berlingo 1.9 D, and a reinforced tensioner on the 406 1.9 TD with air conditioning up to June 1999.
  4. 4Low severityFrequency: OccasionalLubricationOil seepage from the sump gasketCaradisiac cites a light oil sweat from the sump gasket around 70,000 km on the non-HDi 306 diesels and on the four-cylinder 406 diesels with air conditioning, and considers it harmless. Oil consumption and leaks also appear in reviews of the Berlingo, 206, Xsara and 306.Appears at around 70,000 km

What the 1.9 D (XUD and DW8) is

The XUD7 (1,769 cc) and XUD9 (1,905 cc) are four-cylinder diesels with a pre-chamber cylinder head (Ricardo Comet V) and indirect injection, which PSA built between 1982 and 2005, according to Wikipedia. The XUD7 produced 58-60 hp; the XUD9 ranged from about 65 hp in naturally aspirated versions to 90-92 hp in the XUD9 TE, a turbo with intercooler, passing through the 75 hp XUD9 SD turbo.[5][7]

The DW8 (1,868 cc, 82.2 × 88 mm, compression ratio of 23:1) is, according to Wikipedia (en), 'in every respect an evolution of the XUD9': no turbo and no common rail, 69-71 hp, Euro 3, and it was withdrawn around 2007 because it did not meet Euro 4. It is not derived from the DW10: the DW10 is the 2.0 HDi direct-injection common-rail engine, which replaced the turbo XUD9 in 1999. That is why we document the DW8 on the same page as the XUD engines.[6]

In the MotorFiable catalogue they are fitted to the Peugeot 306 (1.8 D, 1.9 D, 1.9 SD and 1.9 TD, from 1993 to 2001), the 406 (1.9 SD and 1.9 TD, from 1996 to 1998), the 206 (1.9 D DW8), the Citroën Xsara (1.9 D and 1.9 TD, from 1997 to 2004), the first-generation Berlingo and Partner (1.9 D) and the C15 (1.8 D and 1.9 D). Wikipedia (de) dates the replacement of the Berlingo's 1.9 D with a 1.6 HDi to October 2005.[8][12][13][14][15][16][17][18]

Editorial reliability documentation is scarce for engines more than twenty years old: Caradisiac's pages record specific faults tied to build dates (cylinder head gasket, 1.9 TD connecting rod, accessory belt), and owner reviews on fiches-auto add oil leaks and injection pump faults at mileages above 200,000 km.[1][2][3][4][10]
