1.6 e-XDi160 engine: faults and reliability

SsangYong / KGM 1.6 e-XDi160 diésel (D16DTF) · SsangYong and KGM

The 1.6 e-XDi160 diesel (D16DTF) in the Tivoli and Korando C300 has one well-documented problem: a series of recalls (2018–2021) for the fuel line, which could crack or rub against the wiring and leak diesel, creating a fire risk, in units built up to June 2020. We have not found any other engine faults confirmed by two sources.[1][2][3][4][5]

Which 1.6 e-XDi160 versions should you buy?

    With caution

It is worth buying if the chassis number confirms that the fuel line replacement from the 2018–2021 recalls has been done, which affects units built up to June 2020. We have not found any other serious documented faults, but there are also no large-scale reliability studies.[1][2][4][5]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

What the 1.6 e-XDi160 is

The 1.6 e-XDi160 (code D16DTF) is a 1,597 cc four-cylinder diesel with common-rail injection, a variable-geometry turbo with intercooler and a timing chain, Euro 6 approved. SsangYong introduced it in the Tivoli in 2015.[6][7]

Besides the Tivoli, it is also fitted to the Tivoli XLV (the longer version, which according to Spanish Wikipedia is offered only with all-wheel drive and this diesel) and, from 2019, to the Korando C300, where English Wikipedia gives it as 136 hp. For the Tivoli, the mymotorlist.com database cites 115 hp and 300 N·m.[6][7][8]

Auto Express notes that the fourth-generation Korando engines have a timing chain, so there is no belt to replace. The only problem the sources consulted document for this diesel is the fuel line recalls, which affected units built between July 2015 and June 2020.[1][2][3][4][9]
