2GD-FTV
2.4 D-4D 150 (2GD-FTV, 150 hp, from 2016) engine: faults and reliability
Toyota 2.4 / 2.8 D-4D (serie GD: 2GD-FTV and 1GD-FTV) version
What changes in this version
2,393 cc diesel with a variable-geometry turbo, common rail and a timing chain. In Europe it is Euro 6 with a particulate filter and SCR with AdBlue (14-litre tank according to ADAC) and delivers 150 hp and 400 Nm. It was the only Hilux engine at its UK launch in April 2016.[3][4][5]
Engine codes of this version: 2GD-FTV.
Faults of the 2GD-FTV engine
The documented engine faults that affect this version and its years, from most to least important.
- 1Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalEmissions controlBlocked particulate filter (DPF) due to incomplete regenerationsThe particulate filter (DPF) of the GD diesels can become saturated with soot when regenerations are not completed, especially on short, urban journeys, and it causes a warning light, white smoke and limp mode. It is very well documented in Australia; in Europe we have found no recall or lawsuit.
- 2Medium severityFrequency: RareTurboVariable geometry turbo (VNT) seized by sootIn the 2.4 and 2.8 D-4D Hilux from 2016-2020, soot can cause the variable geometry of the turbo to seize and deliver incorrect boost pressure, with loss of power or limp mode. Only a Swedish fault guide and a general technical data sheet mention it, so we treat it as rare.
- 3Medium severityFrequency: RareLubricationDiesel dilution of the engine oil from interrupted particulate filter regenerationsIn the 2.4 and 2.8 D-4D Hilux from 2016-2020, interrupted diesel particulate filter regenerations can leave diesel in the engine oil: the dipstick level rises and the oil smells of fuel. Only two sources mention it and give no figures; we rate it as rare.

Frequently asked questions
Is the 2GD-FTV engine reliable?
Our verdict is “With caution”. There are no serious mechanical faults documented in Europe for the 2.4, but it shares the particulate filter technology and the Australian lawsuit also names the 2GD-FTV: it is worth knowing how the car has been used and that regenerations are not left unfinished.[1][2]
What faults does the 2GD-FTV engine have?
The documented ones that affect this version, by importance: blocked particulate filter (DPF) due to incomplete regenerations (medium severity), variable geometry turbo (VNT) seized by soot (medium severity) and diesel dilution of the engine oil from interrupted particulate filter regenerations (medium severity).
