09G (Aisin) gearbox: faults and reliability

Volkswagen 09G / Aisin TF-60SN (convertidor de par, 6 velocidades, «Tiptronic») · Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Škoda

The 09G is the Aisin (TF-60SN) 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox that the Volkswagen Group sold as the "Tiptronic" from 2003, in the Golf V/VI, Passat B6, Touran, Tiguan I and sister models from Seat, Škoda and Audi. It has a reputation for being tougher than the DSG and there are hardly any serious faults documented, although isolated cases of overheating or gearbox failure exist, and you should not rely on the "lifetime" oil.[1][2][3]

    With caution

It has a reputation for being more reliable than the DSG and the press documents hardly any systemic faults, but there are isolated cases of overheating or total gearbox failure, and as with any torque converter automatic of this age it is worth checking the oil maintenance history before buying.[3][4][5]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

What the 09G (Aisin) is

The 09G is the code the Volkswagen Group uses to identify the Aisin TF-60SN automatic gearbox: a torque converter and planetary gearset transmission, 6-speed and transversely mounted. It was marketed as the "Tiptronic", to distinguish it from the dual-clutch DSG, and the group also used the codes 09M and 09K for it or for very similar variants, although the sources consulted do not explain exactly what distinguishes each one.[1][2]

Aisin supplied it to the Volkswagen Group from the early 2000s: the earliest documented application is the Volkswagen Transporter T5 (2003), and it reached the Golf V around the same time. From there it spread to other cars built on the same transverse platform or related to the Golf of their generation - the Seat Leon explicitly shares its technical base with the equivalent Golf - such as the Audi A3 8P, the Škoda Octavia II, the Touran I or the Passat B6, and later the Tiguan I and the Jetta VI.[1][2][6]

The documentation available in the press and used-car buying guides devotes far more pages to DSG failures - above all the dry-clutch DQ200 - than to those of this Tiptronic: a buying guide centred on the Passat B6 expressly describes it as considerably more reliable than the DSG. That does not mean it is free of faults, but it does mean that the documented ones are scarcer and, on the information available, look like isolated cases rather than a systemic pattern.[3]

What changed between versions

  1. 2003–2018

    09G (Aisin TF-60SN, 2003-2018)

We have found no sources documenting a second generation or a significant redesign of this gearbox over its commercial life: the codes 09G (the most cited), 09M and 09K coexist in the available documentation without it explaining what sets each one apart.[2]
