Volkswagen 1.2 TDI de 3 cilindros common rail (EA189, 2009-2014)Particulate filter (DPF/FAP)
Blocked diesel particulate filter (DPF) on the 1.2 TDI
Why this rating?
Medium severity: It can leave you stranded or get worse if ignored, without destroying the engine.
Frequency occasional: Particulate filter blockage is a widespread problem in urban use of any diesel of this era, but there are no incidence figures specific to this engine, nor sources that single it out as a defect of its own. We rate it as «occasional»: the risk depends mainly on use (short journeys) rather than on the engine's design.[2]
Symptoms
- The particulate filter warning light comes on when the accumulated soot exceeds the limit without a regeneration having been completed.[2]DPF warning light: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
- If the warning is ignored, the control unit can activate an emergency mode with loss of power to protect the engine.[2]Limp mode: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
Why it happens
Short urban journeys at low revs do not heat the exhaust enough to burn off the accumulated soot, and the automatic regeneration is interrupted.[2]
If it is not repaired: A heavily saturated filter may need a forced regeneration at the garage or, if it is already damaged, complete replacement; in addition, the car will not pass the MOT-style inspection (the ITV in Spain) while it is blocked.[2]
Affected cars and years
The sources consulted describe this engine with a particulate filter as standard ("1.2 TDI CR DPF") in all its documented applications.[1]

How much it costs to repair
Includes: New particulate filter including labour; ultrasonic cleaning is a cheaper but temporary alternative.[2]
Diariomotor puts a new filter from about €500-600 in Spain and warns that the cost can exceed €2,000 depending on the model. This is not a figure specific to this engine.
Prices in Spain, including VAT. A workshop hour costs on average €38–66 at independent garages and €77–134 at dealerships in Spain, depending on the region and the brand. How we calculate costs
How to check for it before buying a used car
- Ask about the car's usual use: one used in the city on short journeys is a candidate for DPF problems.[2]
- Ask for a diagnostic scan to see the accumulated soot load.
Parts needed

Replaced when cleaning is no longer enough to bring down the soot load.
Indicative price of the part: €500–€2,000

How to prevent it
- Make road journeys from time to time so that the filter regenerates by itself.[2]
Recalls, campaigns and claims
As of 27 September 2026, we have no record of recalls, campaigns or extended manufacturer warranties for this fault. Check with an official dealer using the chassis (VIN) number: they will tell you whether the car has any outstanding campaign.
What owners say
Frequently asked questions
Do all versions of this engine have a particulate filter?
The sources consulted describe this engine with a particulate filter as standard ("1.2 TDI CR DPF") in all its documented applications, with no versions lacking a DPF.[1]
How much does it cost to replace the particulate filter?
As a generic figure in Spain, a new filter starts at about €500-600 and can exceed €2,000 depending on the model, with labour on top.[2]
What happens if I keep driving with the DPF warning light on?
The car can activate an emergency mode with loss of power to protect the engine, and it will not pass the ITV (the Spanish roadworthiness inspection) while the filter is blocked.[2]

Other 1.2 TDI faults
- Medium severityFrequency: Very frequentEmissions controlManipulated emissions software (dieselgate) and the subsequent updateThis 1.2 TDI belongs to the EA189 family. The emissions scandal broke in September 2015, centred on the 1.6 and 2.0-litre TDIs, but the list of affected engines was extended to include this 1.2 TDI a few days later. Volkswagen has offered the software update free of charge since January 2016.Repair: €0
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalTimingTiming belt, water pump and high-pressure pumpOn this engine, a single toothed belt drives the camshaft, the water pump and the common-rail high-pressure pump. If the water pump seizes, it can drag the belt with it and cause it to jump a tooth or break, with the risk of serious engine damage.Repair (garage): €400–€700
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalTurboFailing turbo: loss of power, whistling or smokeThe 1.2 TDI's turbo can lose pressure through deteriorated hoses or wear on the shaft with use. The engine loses power, whistles or gives off bluish smoke, and replacing the turbo costs around €1,000 in Spain if there is no added damage to other parts.Repair (garage): €1,000
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalEmissions controlEGR valve blocked by carbon depositsThe EGR valve builds up carbon deposits, especially on short urban journeys, until it seizes and stops sealing or opening precisely. The engine loses power and judders; cleaning it costs considerably less than replacing it.Repair (garage): €100–€700
More faults with the particulate filter on other engines and cars
- High severityFrequency: Very frequentOM651EGR and particulate filter clogging, and emissions software updatesThe particulate filter and EGR clog up with short journeys, as on any diesel with these systems. In addition, Germany's KBA required software updates on several models with this engine between 2018 and 2021 because of a function that reduced EGR outside a temperature range.Repair (garage): €800–€2,500
- High severityFrequency: Common1.3 MultijetIncomplete particulate filter regenerations and oil dilutionIn heavy urban use, with short journeys that do not let the particulate filter regeneration finish, unburnt diesel passes into the sump and dilutes the oil; the level can rise on the dipstick and the oil loses its ability to lubricate. Repeated many times, it speeds up engine wear.
- High severityFrequency: Common2.0 HDiDPF clogging on additive-type systems (Eolys/cerine)The additive-type diesel particulate filter (DPF) of the 2.0 HDi clogs relatively easily on short journeys, especially on the 107/110 and 136-140 hp versions. The anti-pollution warning light comes on and, if ignored, the car loses power and may end up needing a new DPF.
- High severityFrequency: Common1.6 and 2.0 MultiJet IISaturated diesel particulate filter (DPF) from incomplete regenerationsIn urban use with short journeys, the particulate filter does not manage to complete its regeneration and becomes saturated; garages recommend a weekly motorway run to avoid it. The filter itself is among the weak points flagged in the 1.6 and 2.0 MultiJet II after a certain mileage.
- High severityFrequency: Common2.0 Ingenium diéselFuel dilution of the oil linked to particulate filter regenerationsYes: on short trips and in urban use, the Ingenium diesel's particulate filter does not always complete regeneration, and some of the diesel injected to burn off the soot ends up mixing with the engine oil, which reduces its ability to lubricate.
- High severityFrequency: CommonMZR-CDOil dilution from leaking injector seals and DPF regenerationsOn the 2.0 and 2.2 MZR-CD, injector seals that age badly and incomplete particulate filter regenerations on short journeys can let unburnt diesel into the sump, diluting the oil and leaving the engine with less lubrication.
