Grupo Volkswagen 1.6 and 2.0 8v de gasolina (EA827 and EA113)Head gasket
Head gasket on the 1.6 and 2.0 8v EA827
Why this rating?
High severity: Expensive repair (over about €1,000), leaves the car immobilised or reduces a safety function without disabling it.
Frequency rare: It only appears on two fiches-auto.fr pages: the general Octavia I text for the 115 hp 2.0 and 2 of 5 Golf IV owner accounts with the 102 hp 1.6. It does not appear among the 20 Audi A3 owner accounts with the 100 hp 1.6 or the 7 Golf IV accounts with the 2.0. With so little data we rate it rare.[1][2][3]
Symptoms
- Work on the head gasket or cylinder head in the Golf IV owner accounts with the 102 hp 1.6.[2]
Why it happens
The sources do not explain the cause; fiches-auto.fr only records the fault.[1][2]
If it is not repaired: Motor16 places a warped cylinder head and a damaged head gasket in the scenario of a broken belt in an interference engine, with repairs above €1,500. The sources for this page do not explain the cause of the recorded head gasket cases.[2][4]
Affected cars and years
The two sources refer to the 115 hp 2.0 (Octavia I) and the 102 hp 1.6 (Golf IV).[1][2]

How much it costs to repair
Includes: Replacement of the head gasket, with cylinder head skimming if needed, and labour.[2]
We have not found published Spanish prices for this repair on these engines.
Prices in Spain, including VAT. A workshop hour costs on average €38–66 at independent garages and €77–134 at dealerships in Spain, depending on the region and the brand. How we calculate costs
How to check for it before buying a used car
- Check that there is no milky residue on the oil filler cap and no coolant loss, and that the temperature stays stable while driving.
- Ask for the repair history: a head gasket already replaced, with an invoice, is a good sign.
Parts needed
The part or kit that fixes this fault, according to the sources.
Head gasket and bolt set 1.6 / 2.0 8v
Seals the join between block and cylinder head; it is replaced with new bolts during the repair.

How to prevent it
- Keep an eye on the coolant level, deal with any leak promptly and change the belt and pump at the due interval: Motor16 warns that a faulty pump makes the engine overheat without warning.[4]
Recalls, campaigns and claims
As of 2 November 2026, we have no record of recalls, campaigns or extended manufacturer warranties for this fault. Check with an official dealer using the chassis (VIN) number: they will tell you whether the car has any outstanding campaign.
What owners say
Frequently asked questions
Does the 1.6 8v have head gasket problems?
Fiches-auto.fr records 2 cases among 5 Golf IV owner accounts with the 102 hp 1.6 and none on the Audi A3 with the 1.6 100 hp (20 accounts). It is a very small sample, which does not allow us to speak of a widespread fault.[2][3]
And the 115 hp 2.0?
The general fiches-auto.fr text on the Octavia I cites it among the problems of the 115 hp 2.0, alongside the lambda sensor and the catalytic converter; it does not appear in the Golf IV statistics for the 2.0 (7 owner accounts).[1][2]
How can I stop the gasket failing?
Motor16 notes that a faulty pump makes the engine overheat without warning, and that a broken belt can distort the cylinder head and damage the gasket in an interference engine. Change the belt and pump on time and keep an eye on the coolant.[4]

Other 1.6 and 2.0 8v EA827 faults
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalTimingTiming belt and water pumpThese engines drive the camshaft with a toothed belt and, on the EA113 evolution, that same belt also drives the water pump. A seized pump or an overdue belt can leave you stranded and, if the belt snaps, can damage the engine.Repair (garage): €400–€700
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalCoolingCoolant leaks: flange and water pumpCoolant leaks from the cylinder head flange and the water pump are reported on the 8-valve 1.6 and 2.0. It is not a widespread fault, but Motor16 warns that a faulty pump makes the engine overheat without warning: check the level and look for traces of fluid.
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalLubricationHigh oil consumptionGebrauchtwagenberater reports high oil consumption on the 2.0 of the Golf IV and relatively high consumption on the petrol León I, without specifying the engine. Fiches-auto.fr adds a case on the 102 hp 1.6. The sources do not identify the responsible part.
- Low severityFrequency: OccasionalElectronicsRough idle, mass airflow meter and lambda sensorsOn the 8-valve 1.6 and 2.0, fiches-auto.fr cites rough idle caused by a dirty throttle or sensor, and mass airflow meter and lambda sensor faults. These are sensor parts, and one owner says they failed the ITV because of emissions.
- Low severityFrequency: RareIgnitionIgnition faults: coils and spark plugsFiches-auto.fr warns of ignition problems on the 1.6s of the Octavia I, and the ADAC, according to Gebrauchtwagenberater, concentrates Golf IV faults on the distributor and coil. There are few documented cases specific to these engines.
More faults with the head gasket on other engines and cars
- Critical severityFrequency: Very frequent2.0/2.2 D-4DWarped cylinder head gasket and oil consumption on the 2.2 D-4DYes: the 2.2-litre block (2AD-FTV and 2AD-FHV D-CAT) has numerous documented cases of warped cylinder head gaskets and oil consumption or dilution in the Avensis, RAV4, Auris, Corolla Verso and Verso, with repairs that sometimes require replacing the engine.Appears at around 40,000 km
- Critical severityFrequency: Common1.6 EcoBoostCracked cylinder head from overheating, with fire riskYes: Ford acknowledges that a loss of coolant circulation can overheat the engine, crack the cylinder head and let oil escape onto hot areas, with a risk of fire. It has issued recalls in South Africa (2017-2018) and in the US/Canada (2013 and 2017); we have not found an identical campaign in Spain.
- High severityFrequency: Common1.4/1.6/1.8 Ecotec 16V (primera generación)Leaking water pump and head gasket burnt by overheatingThe water pump of the four-valve Ecotecs tends to drip. If the coolant loss goes unnoticed, the engine overheats and can burn the head gasket; the sources cite it on the Corsa B, the Astra F and G and the 1.4 Corsa C.
- High severityFrequency: Common1.9 D / dTiDamaged cylinder head and head gasket (naturally aspirated 1.9 D)The naturally aspirated 1.9 D (F8Q) is known for cylinder head and head gasket problems, especially in its first generation: adding up the Fiches-auto entries, the cylinder head appears in 14% of opinions and the gasket in 10%, and Wikipedia acknowledges it.
- High severityFrequency: CommonRover K-SeriesHead gasket failureThe K-Series' big problem is the head gasket, which can fail even below 100,000 km because of a mix of gasket design, cooling and overheating. The usual repair uses the multi-layer steel (MLS) gasket that was developed for the Freelander.
- Critical severityFrequency: Occasional2.3 EcoBoostFocus RS cylinder head gasket and block: coolant entering the cylindersYes, on the 2016-2017 Focus RS: the cylinder head gasket can stop sealing and coolant gets into the cylinders, causing white smoke, misfires when cold and coolant loss. Ford offered to inspect and repair affected cars free of charge, with no limit on warranty or mileage.
