ZF 8HP (caja automática de convertidor de par, 8 velocidades)Automatic gearbox (torque converter and CVT)Gearbox mechatronic unitManual gearbox
Mechatronic failure as the gearbox ages (sometimes with reverse) on the ZF 8HP
Why this rating?
High severity: Risk of a serious engine, turbo or gearbox failure.
Frequency occasional: It is a minority within each sample of accounts reviewed (about 8 gearbox fault cases among 252 accounts for the BMW 5 Series F10), but it repeats across different models and brands -BMW, Audi, Land Rover-, which rules out an isolated case from a single manufacturer. There is no joint official count or campaign that would allow it to be quantified precisely across the whole range.[1][2][3]
Symptoms
- The gearbox stays in a single gear, does not engage reverse or stops responding normally to the selector.[1]Gears will not engage: other faults that cause it · As soon as possible
- Entering safety mode with very limited gears or loss of performance.[3]Limp mode: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
- Gearbox fault warning on the dashboard that does not always go away when the control unit is restarted.[2]Gearbox warning: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
Why it happens
The valve body and solenoid valves of the mechatronics regulate the oil pressure that operates the internal clutches; with years and mileage they can wear or fail more deeply than a simple calibration drift.[4]
On a BMW 5 Series (F10), one owner documents a mechatronic failure at 128,000 km, and another describes a quote of around €10,000 after being unable to engage reverse.[1]
On the Land Rover Range Rover Sport and the Audi A6 with the 3.0 TDI, several owners describe the gearbox control unit, the selector or the solenoid valves ceasing to communicate correctly, locking the transmission or preventing a gear from engaging.[2][3]
If it is not repaired: In the worst case, the gearbox stops working normally and the mechatronics or valve body has to be repaired or replaced, with the cost and downtime that entails; in milder cases a reprogramming is enough.[1]
Affected cars and years
It is documented on both first- and second-generation units, across different brands and models, without the sources allowing it to be blamed on a single specific version.[1][4]

How much it costs to repair
Includes: Diagnosis and replacement or repair of the mechatronics/valve body at an official dealer.[1]
Figure from a documented case on the BMW 5 Series (F10); if the failure also affects the internal gears or clutches, or the complete gearbox has to be replaced, the cost can be considerably higher -one owner describes a quote of around €10,000 for a reverse gear fault-. We have not found independent garage rates specific to the ZF 8HP.
Prices in Spain, including VAT. A workshop hour costs on average €38–66 at independent garages and €77–134 at dealerships in Spain, depending on the region and the brand. How we calculate costs
How to check for it before buying a used car
- Ask for a diagnosis with an OBD reader and check whether any gearbox fault codes are stored in the control unit, even if the warning light is not on at that moment.
- Check that all the gears engage normally, including reverse, cold and warm.[1]
- Ask whether the gearbox has had any work on the mechatronics and, if so, ask for the invoice and the mileage at which it was done.
Parts needed

ZF 8HP mechatronics / valve body
Unit that integrates the solenoid valves and the gearbox control unit; it is repaired or replaced when the pressure or the communication with the rest of the vehicle fails.

How to prevent it
- Changing the gearbox oil and filter preventively (see the related fault) reduces the risk of the mechatronics wearing out early.
- Do not ignore a gearbox warning light or a gear that is hard to engage: the sooner it is checked, the lower the risk of a major repair.
Recalls, campaigns and claims
As of 27 September 2026, we have no record of recalls, campaigns or extended manufacturer warranties for this fault. Check with an official dealer using the chassis (VIN) number: they will tell you whether the car has any outstanding campaign.
What owners say
Frequently asked questions
Does the ZF 8HP mechatronic unit fail often?
Not in most cases: in the reliability analyses consulted it is a minority of the accounts, but it repeats across different brands and can appear from 120,000-130,000 km.[1]
Is this fault covered out of warranty?
There is no official policy published by any manufacturer; it is worth negotiating case by case with the dealer, especially if the car has had regular maintenance.[1]
Can only the mechatronics be repaired without replacing the whole gearbox?
In several of the documented cases yes, by replacing or repairing the valve body; only in the most serious cases does the complete gearbox need replacing.[4]
What can you do now?
We will put you in touch with a partner only if you authorise it in the form.
Other ZF 8HP faults
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonTransmissionJerking and hesitation when changing gear, sometimes needing reprogrammingYes: on BMW, Audi, Jaguar and Alfa Romeo there are accounts of jerking, hesitation or harsh shifts with the ZF 8HP. It is usually due to ageing oil or the calibration of the mechatronics, and the dealer often fixes it -not always first time- by reprogramming the gearbox control unit.
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalLubricationOil leaks from the gearbox gaskets or sumpYes: on the BMW 1 Series and the Jaguar F-Pace there are accounts of oil leaks from the ZF 8HP gearbox gaskets, in one case already at 40,000 km. If it is not repaired soon, the loss of pressure can speed up internal wear and lead to the jerking or mechatronic failure of the related faults.Repair (garage): €1,000–€2,000
More faults with the automatic gearbox on other engines and cars
- Critical severityFrequency: CommonMultitronicWear of the variator chain and conesYes: the variator uses a chain of more than 1,000 links between two pairs of cones that wears with mileage, especially if the oil is not changed regularly. Gebrauchtwagenberater ties the gearbox's reputation to "numerous total failures"; Schaeffler/LuK sells a kit to repair the chain.
- Critical severityFrequency: Common2.0 CDI (OM640)Costly failure of the Autotronic (CVT) automatic gearboxYes: the Autotronic continuously variable gearbox, optional on the 180 CDI and 200 CDI, is the problem cited most by owners of the 140 hp version (24 of 114 testimonies) and a fault hotspot according to the ADAC up to 2006. A German source recommends avoiding it and choosing the manual gearbox.
- High severityFrequency: CommonMultitronicControl unit (TCU) failure and limp modeYes: the multitronic control unit, especially in the 01J code (up to 2007), is one of its best-documented weak points. Overheating with oil seeping into the control unit causes fault warnings and limp mode and, if ignored, can end up damaging the gearbox itself.
- High severityFrequency: CommonAudi A6 C6Wear and failures of the Multitronic automatic gearbox on front-wheel-drive versionsYes: on front-wheel-drive versions with the Multitronic (CVT) gearbox, gebrauchtwagenberater.de documents jerking when pulling away that can progress to complete failure, especially on older cars; fiches-auto.fr adds selector lock-ups and torque converter breakages. The quattro versions, with the Tiptronic gearbox, do not share this problem.Repair (garage): €1,000Appears at around 120,000 km
- High severityFrequency: CommonMINI Cooper R50Faults in the CVT automatic gearbox, the manual gearbox and the clutchAccording to the reports collected by fiches-auto.fr, the Mini R50 accumulates 22 gearbox mentions and 32 clutch mentions, and the CVT automatic variant is described as fragile and 'to be avoided'. Wikipedia confirms that the CVT and the manual gearboxes were fitted depending on the year.
- High severityFrequency: CommonRenault AustralErratic behaviour of the E-Tech hybrid automatic gearboxOn the 200 hp E-Tech hybrid Austral built from 3 October 2022 to 25 June 2024, the gearbox input shaft seal can wear out early and allow oil to leak towards the electric motor. Renault covers the repair (seal or complete gearbox) in France even after the two-year warranty has expired, but it is not a recall.
