Automatic gearbox fault warning: causes and the faults that trigger it
The gearbox warning lights, a yellow cog or a red light depending on the make, warn of a fault in an automatic gearbox. RACE (Spain's motoring club) says a red or yellow light comes on in the dashboard and that, if the fault is serious, you should not keep driving: the recommendation is to call roadside assistance and have a garage read the codes with a diagnostic machine.[1][2]
Colour: yellow or amber. Symbol: a gear or cog, yellow or red depending on the make.
25 documented faults cause it in 16 engines. The most important:
- Critical severity: Costly failure of the Autotronic (CVT) automatic gearbox · 2.0 CDI (OM640)
- High severity: Mechatronic unit failure: pressure accumulator, pump and cracked housing · DSG7 DQ200
- High severity: Control unit (TCU) failure and limp mode · Multitronic
What it means
On automatic and dual-clutch gearboxes, the warning can show up as a dedicated warning light, as a flashing gear indicator or as a message on the dashboard. It is often accompanied by a limp mode with only a few gears available.
General explanation from MotorFiable. How it shows up in each engine, with sources, is in the list of faults.
What to do now
Garage soon
Stop the car somewhere safe. Sometimes the warning disappears when you switch off and on again, but the fault stays logged: have it diagnosed before it gets worse.
Most common causes
From most to least likely according to the sources. Under each cause, the part and the related OBD codes.
1. Degraded ATF oil or insufficient level
Common causeRACE points to degradation of the hydraulic ATF oil as the most common problem in the automatic gearbox: it loses its lubricating power and gets dirty, and the parts rub more. It also cites lack of oil, or the circuit having run out of it, among the reasons the gears won't go in.[1][2]
2. Clogged valve body (mechatronic unit)
Common causeAccording to RACE, when the oil gets dirty the valve body, also called the mechatronic unit, can become clogged, and it describes this as a fairly common failure. The first symptoms are that the car changes gear when it shouldn't, doesn't change or revs without moving up to the next gear.[2]

3. Electrohydraulic unit or synchronisation fault
Possible causeRACE mentions problems with the electrohydraulic unit that manages the gearbox and the unit's synchronisation failure, for example if the gearbox is replaced and the new one is not resynchronised.[1]

4. Low battery voltage
Possible causeRACE includes lack of battery power among the reasons why the automatic gearbox doesn't work: with low voltage the electronic management doesn't work properly.[1]
5. Leak or lack of pressure in the hydraulic circuit
Possible causeRACE explains that a small leak in the hydraulic circuit can cause a pressure problem and the gearbox to start working improperly.[1]
6. Torque converter or internal clutch disc
UncommonRACE cites wear of the internal clutch disc and torque converter failure; in the latter case, a very common fault is that the gearbox doesn't go past second gear.[1]
Faults with with the automatic gearboxFaults with with the clutch
7. Internal breakage of a component
UncommonRACE also lists the breakage of a component inside the gearbox among the causes of the gears not going in.[1]
Depending on what you notice
The car revs and doesn't change up
RACE describes as the first symptom of an automatic gearbox fault the car revving excessively without moving to the next gear or staying in a high gear and not shifting down. It links it to dirty oil and a clogged valve body.[2]
The automatic gearbox won't go into gear
RACE gives as causes lack of lubrication, wear of the clutch disc, the electrohydraulic unit, a low battery, lack of synchronisation, hydraulic leaks, the torque converter or an internal breakage. With the fault a red or yellow warning light comes on.[1]
The warning goes away when you switch off and restart
None of the sources consulted talks about warnings that disappear on their own. What they do say is that a recorded fault requires diagnosis with a machine, so it is worth reading the codes even if the light has gone out.[1][2]
Dual-clutch gearbox with jerking at low speed
RACE cites as drawbacks of the dual-clutch gearbox (DCT) jerking at low speed, clutch wear, greater mechanical and electronic complexity and potentially more costly repairs.[3]
CVT or e-CVT gearbox with a warning
RACE says CVT gearboxes are not repaired but replaced, and recommends changing their specific oil every 90,000 km. The e-CVTs in Toyota hybrids have no belt or pulleys: they are controlled by a control unit.[4]
What to check first
- Note the colour and symbol of the warning light, whether the gear indicator flashes and how the gearbox behaves: jerking, gears that won't go in, high revs or only one gear available.[1][2]
- With the car stationary in a safe place, check the condition of the 12 V battery: RACE includes low voltage among the causes of a gearbox that doesn't work.[1]
- See when the ATF oil and filter were last changed: RACE speaks of roughly every 100,000 km on torque converter gearboxes and every 90,000 km on CVTs, as the manufacturer indicates.[1][2][4]
- Check for oil stains under the car, since a leak in the hydraulic circuit lowers the pressure.[1]
- Ask for a code reading of the gearbox control unit with a diagnostic machine and a detailed quote before agreeing to replace the gearbox.[1][2]
Can I keep driving?
Urgency: Garage soon
RACE warns that if a red or yellow warning light comes on because of an automatic gearbox fault, there is a major mechanical fault and you should not keep driving: the right thing is to call roadside assistance to have the car taken to a garage. If the warning appears while the car is working normally, no source sets how many kilometres you can drive; the prudent course is to get a diagnosis as soon as possible.[1][2]

Frequently asked questions
What does the automatic gearbox warning light mean?
RACE explains that, when something fails in the automatic gearbox, a red or yellow warning light comes on in the dashboard (a cog in the case of the yellow one). It indicates a major mechanical problem and doesn't say by itself which: the codes have to be read with a diagnostic machine.[1][2]
Can you drive with the gearbox warning light on?
RACE advises not to keep driving and to call roadside assistance to have the car taken to a garage with a diagnostic machine.[1]
How much does it cost to repair an automatic gearbox?
RACE says the normal course is to repair it, for €2,000 to €3,000. Replacing it with a new one can cost around €6,000 for the part plus labour, and the total can exceed €7,000-8,000. These are prices in Spain.[1][2]
How many kilometres between automatic gearbox oil changes?
RACE says the hydraulic ATF oil and its filter are changed roughly every 100,000 km, depending on the manufacturer, and that CVT gearboxes need their specific oil every 90,000 km. Going beyond that interval wears the parts prematurely.[1][2][4]
Does a small car with an automatic gearbox use the same oil?
Not always. RACE explains that many automatics in small cars are actually robotised, with a control unit and servomotors, and use gearbox oil like a manual instead of ATF oil.[2]
