Problems with the manual gearbox: symptoms, cost and affected models
We have documented 106 faults with the manual gearbox in 10 engines and gearboxes and 95 cars, affecting 176 models of car in our database. The most important by severity and frequency: noise and premature wear of the manual gearbox and clutch (MINI Cooper R56), gear lever shudder and risk of M32 manual gearbox failure (Opel Astra J) and stiff or non-engaging manual gearbox (synchros and bearings) (Suzuki Grand Vitara II). At an independent garage, the repair costs from €340 to €4,000 depending on the engine or car.[1][2][3]
How it works and why it fails
Manual gearbox
Manual gearboxes are generally very durable, but some have bearings, synchromesh or linkages with documented abnormal wear. The typical symptom is a noise that increases with speed or gears that grind or will not engage.
What to do
If a gear grinds when you select it, the lever wobbles or the gearbox makes a bearing noise, check the gearbox oil level and get a diagnosis early: a bearing that breaks can wreck the whole gearbox.
