What code P0463 means

The ECU has read a voltage above its normal range from fuel level sensor "A" for a period of time.[1][2]

The sensor is a float with an arm over a variable resistor, inside the fuel pump module in the tank. The voltage changes with the level. A high signal usually indicates an open circuit in the sensor or its wiring, which lets the signal rise towards the reference voltage.[1]

The ECU uses the level to decide when to run the EVAP leak check, so an incorrect value can block it.[1]

Original definition (SAE J2012): Fuel Level Sensor A Circuit High[1][2]

Causes of P0463

From most to least likely, according to the sources.

  1. 1Level sensor (float resistor) open or corroded inside the pump module, the most common cause according to AutoDTCs.[1][2]
  2. 2Float arm bent, broken or stuck, so that the wiper loses contact.[1]
  3. 3Signal wire open or chafed between the sensor and the ECU or cluster.[1][2]
  4. 4Loose or corroded connector at the pump module or at a splice.[1][2]
  5. 5Instrument cluster or ECU fault, uncommon.[1][2]

Symptoms

How to diagnose P0463

In order: from the most likely and cheapest to check to the most expensive.

  1. 1With a diagnostic tool, read the fuel level value and compare it with the fuel actually in the tank.[1]
  2. 2Inspect the pump module connector (usually under the rear seat) for corrosion or pushed-in pins and wiggle the wiring while watching the live value.[1]
  3. 3Check the continuity of the signal wire to the ECU or cluster.[1]
  4. 4Measure the sensor resistance while moving the float from empty to full; there must be no open sections.[1]
  5. 5Check earth and reference voltage before suspecting the ECU or cluster.[1][2]

Can I keep driving with P0463?

Monitor

It does not damage the engine, but an unreliable gauge can leave you without fuel: refuel soon and keep track of the kilometres. It keeps the warning light on and may fail the emissions test.[1]

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive with code P0463?

Yes, but do not trust the gauge: keep track of the kilometres and refuel with a margin.[1]

Does the fuel pump need replacing?

Not necessarily. The sensor is inside the pump module, but the fault may be in the connector, the wiring or the float. The module is only replaced if the sensor is faulty.[1][2]

Why does the warning light come on because of a gauge?

Because the ECU uses the level to run the EVAP system check and detects out-of-range signals.[1]

How much does it cost to fix?

CarWiki gives a range of €50 to €1,500 depending on the cause, from a connector to the complete module. It is not a reliable workshop figure.[2]

Will I pass the MOT with code P0463?

If the code has switched on the engine warning light, no: with that light on, the inspection records a serious defect, and on Euro 5 and Euro 6 cars the ITV (Spain's roadworthiness inspection, similar to the MOT) also reads the OBD diagnostic system. Repair the fault before you go; clearing the code just before the inspection does not help either, because it counts as a serious defect.[3]
