Kia EV6 problems (2021–today)

The only engine of the Kia EV6 that we have documented, the Hyundai-Kia E-GMP (Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, EV6), has high or critical severity faults in the versions it is fitted to. Our verdict depends on the version: «Buy» for Ioniq 5 and EV6 with 84 kWh battery, facelift (2024-present); «With caution» for Ioniq 5 and EV6 58 kWh, rear-wheel drive, 170 hp (2021-2024), Ioniq 5 and EV6 72.6 kWh and 77.4 kWh, rear-wheel drive, 218-229 hp (2021-2024) and Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6 and EV6 77.4 kWh, all-wheel drive, 306-325 hp (2021-2024).[1][2][3][4][5][6]

Outside the engine: Outside the ICCU and the charging system, which we rate under its electric motor, the EV6 has three recalls (parking brake in 2021-2022, rear left driveshaft in 2023 and the digital instrument cluster screen in 2025) and software faults such as the 'zombie' mode. Drains of the 12 V battery are also mentioned. Almost everything is fixed with software or at the official service.[4][7][8][9][10]

The first label is the most serious fault affecting that engine in this car; the second, our verdict for the versions it is fitted to. Each engine's risk index is calculated only from the faults that affect this car (how we calculate it). Faults that affect the EV6

  1. High severityFrequency: CommonPower electronicsFaulty ICCU: 12 V battery drains, charging fails and power is lostThe ICCU, which combines the on-board charger and the converter that powers the 12 V system, can fail on the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6 and EV6: it cuts AC charging, drains the 12 V battery and, in the worst case, the car loses power and stops. Hyundai and Kia have recalled units built from 2021 to 2024.Repair: €2,000–€5,000
  2. High severityFrequency: RareTraction batteryFaulty traction battery module or cellsOn some Ioniq 5 and EV6 the battery management system detects a faulty module or cell block, limits power or immobilises the car, and the repair requires replacing the module. These are isolated testimonies from one listing, with no campaign or study behind them.
  3. High severityFrequency: RareElectric motor and reduction gearWhine from the reduction gear or electric motor and bearing wearSome Ioniq 5 and EV6 owners describe a whine or whistle from the reduction gear that increases with speed and, in one EV6 case, replacement of the motor or reduction gear at 19,000 km. It is a rare problem, based only on listing testimonies.
  4. Medium severityFrequency: RareChargingIoniq 6 charging port cover and panel: opens by itself or may come offOn the Ioniq 6 the charging port cover can open by itself with the car parked, or close badly, and a 2026 recall covers the risk of the outer panel coming off while driving. The evidence is a single listing with few testimonies.

What problems does the Kia EV6 have apart from the engine?

Outside the ICCU and the charging system, which we rate under its electric motor, the EV6 has three recalls (parking brake in 2021-2022, rear left driveshaft in 2023 and the digital instrument cluster screen in 2025) and software faults such as the 'zombie' mode. Drains of the 12 V battery are also mentioned. Almost everything is fixed with software or at the official service. The most important documented faults are: electric parking brake fault (brakes, high severity), rear left driveshaft with faulty heat treatment: may break (gearbox and clutch, high severity), software faults: 'zombie' mode, black screen and slow response (electronics and infotainment, medium severity) and digital instrument cluster screen with delay or incorrect response (electronics and infotainment, medium severity).[4][7][8][9][10]

What faults does the Kia EV6 have?

The most important by severity and frequency, on the engines we have documented, are: faulty ICCU: 12 V battery drains, charging fails and power is lost (Hyundai-Kia E-GMP (Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, EV6), high severity), faulty traction battery module or cells (Hyundai-Kia E-GMP (Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, EV6), high severity), whine from the reduction gear or electric motor and bearing wear (Hyundai-Kia E-GMP (Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, EV6), high severity) and ioniq 6 charging port cover and panel: opens by itself or may come off (Hyundai-Kia E-GMP (Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, EV6), medium severity).

What is the best year to buy a Kia EV6?

According to our rating by year, the best is 2026 (8.5/10); the worst rated is 2021 (6.5/10). Each year's rating counts only the engines sold that year and the faults that affect those units: open each year to see what changes.
