Is the 1.0 TSI / 1.5 TSI reliable?

The three-cylinder 1.0 TSI has a reputation for being robust and has no systematic serious faults. The 2017–2019 1.5 TSI evo suffered cold-start jerking at low speed, which Volkswagen corrected with software between 2019 and 2020; later units and the 2022 evo2 are more mature. Watch for coolant leaks and check the 2019 and 2020 recalls.[1][2][3][4][5]

Is the 2.0 and 2.5 Hybrid reliable?

Overall, yes: the M20A-FXS (2.0) and A25A-FXS (2.5) are naturally aspirated, non-turbo engines and carry no known oil consumption or timing problems. Their documented weak point is not in the engine block but in parts that Toyota shares with a large part of its range: the low-pressure fuel pump, with campaigns in the US and the European Union, and the 12 V battery, which discharges easily if the car sits unused for several days.[6][7][8]

  1. Medium severity: Coolant leaks from the water pump and thermostat module
  2. Low severity: Cold jerking at low speed ("kangaroo effect") on the 1.5 TSI evo
  3. Medium severity: Lack of torque on starting in the manual 150 hp 1.5 TSI (2019 recall)
  1. Critical severity: Low-pressure fuel pump failure: loss of power and fire risk
  2. Medium severity: The 12 V battery goes flat if the car sits unused for several days
  3. Critical severity: Loosely tightened inverter bolt on the latest Camry Hybrid (US): fire risk
