1.8/2.2 DI-D engine: faults and reliability
Mitsubishi 1.8/2.2 DI-D (4N13/4N14) · Mitsubishi
Yes, in general: Mitsubishi's own 1.8 DI-D (4N13) and 2.2 DI-D (4N14) diesels have a reputation for reliability compared with the Volkswagen and PSA engines they replaced in 2010. Their best-documented fault is a clogged particulate filter with oil dilution on short journeys, along with occasional cases of injector, turbo and balance shaft problems. Do not confuse them with the PSA 2.2 HDi that the Outlander used earlier, shared with the C-Crosser and the Peugeot 4007.[1][2][3][4]
Which 1.8/2.2 DI-D versions should you buy?
Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.
- With caution
1.8 DI-D 116 (4N13, 2010-2019)
2010–2019 · 116 hp · 4N13
It shares the documented weak points of the 1.8/2.2 DI-D (particulate filter, injectors, EGR valve, turbo); check the service history of the filter and the oil before buying.[3]
- With caution
1.8 DI-D 150 (4N13, 2010-2015)
2010–2015 · 150 hp · 4N13
Same precautions as the 116 hp version: check the particulate filter and the condition of the oil.[3]
- With caution
2.2 DI-D 150 automatic (4N14, 2013-2015)
2013–2015 · 150 hp · 4N14
No sources document faults specific to this variant compared with the Outlander's 177 hp one; the same general precautions as for the 2.2 DI-D apply.[3]
- With caution
2.2/2.3 DI-D 177 MIVEC (4N14, 2010-2021)
2010–2021 · 177 hp · 4N14
Mitsubishi's own engine improved reliability compared with the third-party diesels it replaced, but there are documented cases of balance shaft failure in the third generation; check that it makes no abnormal noises when cold.[4]
Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.
Known faults of the 1.8/2.2 DI-D
Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).
- 1High severityFrequency: CommonEmissions controlClogged particulate filter and oil dilutionYes: the particulate filter on the 1.8/2.2 DI-D often clogs in urban use and on short journeys, and incomplete regeneration dilutes the engine oil with unburnt fuel, the most commonly cited sign being an oil level above the maximum.
- 2High severityFrequency: OccasionalTurboTurbocharger wear at high mileageOccasional: the variable-geometry turbocharger on the 1.8/2.2 DI-D is cited as a weak point at high mileage, with whistling and loss of power as the most common symptoms before failure.
- 3Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalInjectionSoot fouling of injectors and EGR valveOccasional: at high mileage, the common-rail injectors and EGR valve on the 1.8/2.2 DI-D can become fouled with soot, with jerking, loss of power and the engine warning light as the most commonly cited symptoms.
- 4High severityFrequency: RareTimingBalance shaft failure on the Outlander's 2.2 DI-DRare but documented: some units of the third-generation Outlander's 2.2 DI-D (4N14) have suffered balance shaft failures, with abnormal engine noise as the sign.

What the 1.8/2.2 DI-D is
The 4N13 (1.8 litre, 1,798 cc) and the 4N14 (2.2 litre by trade name, 2,268 cc actual displacement) are diesels with an aluminium block and head, 16-valve twin overhead camshafts (DOHC), MIVEC variable valve timing on the intake side, common-rail injection and a variable-geometry turbocharger with intercooler. Mitsubishi presented them in 2010 as its first in-house diesels designed for Europe.[5]
Mitsubishi uses the «DI-D» (Direct Injection-Diesel) brand for any diesel it fits, whether its own or not. The second-generation Outlander (CW, 2006-2012), shared with the Citroën C-Crosser and the Peugeot 4007, was sold first with a Volkswagen 2.0 TDI and, from 2007, with a PSA 2.2 HDi - the latter also sold as the «2.2 DI-D» by Mitsubishi, as a test from the time confirms - and only from September 2010 did it switch to Mitsubishi's own 2.2 DI-D (4N14), which is the one this guide covers. This guide does not cover the Volkswagen or PSA diesels, even though the PSA one shares a trade name with the one we do cover.[1][2][8]
The 1.8 DI-D (4N13) debuted in 2010 in the Mitsubishi ASX and the Lancer, with 116 hp in both and, in the ASX only, also with 150 hp - Mitsubishi's first diesel to reach that power output. From 2013 the ASX also gained a 150 hp 2.2 DI-D (4N14) variant without MIVEC, available only with the torque-converter automatic gearbox, distinct from the 177 hp MIVEC version that the Outlander has used since 2010.[6][7][9]
A German source specialising in used cars describes the Outlander's 4N14 as more durable than the third-party diesels it replaced, precisely because it is Mitsubishi's own design, although it also documents isolated cases of balance shaft failure in the third generation.[4]

What changed between versions
2010–2019
1.8 DI-D 116 (4N13, 2010-2019)
This is the entry-level output of the 1.8 DI-D with which Mitsubishi launched its own diesel in 2010: 116 hp and 300 Nm of torque. It was fitted to both the ASX and the Lancer.[5][6][7][10]
2010–2015
1.8 DI-D 150 (4N13, 2010-2015)
The higher-output version of the 1.8 DI-D (150 hp, the same maximum torque of 300 Nm but delivered at higher revs), exclusive to the ASX and, according to French Wikipedia, Mitsubishi's first diesel to reach that power figure. In 2015 the ASX switched to a PSA-sourced 1.6 DI-D that this guide does not cover.[6][7]
2010–2021
2.2/2.3 DI-D 177 MIVEC (4N14, 2010-2021)
The version with MIVEC on the intake side and higher power (177 hp, 380 Nm at 2,000 rpm) that Mitsubishi reserves for the Outlander: from September 2010 it replaced the Volkswagen and PSA diesels in the second generation (CW) and was the only engine in the third generation (GF/GG) until the arrival of the diesel-free Outlander in 2021.[1][2][4][5]
2013–2015
2.2 DI-D 150 automatic (4N14, 2013-2015)
A 2.2 DI-D variant without MIVEC (150 hp, 360 Nm between 1,500 and 2,750 rpm) that Mitsubishi reserved in the ASX exclusively for the 6-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox and the top-of-the-range Kaiteki trim.[9]
