Particulate filter warning light (DPF) in the 1.6 HDi engine: causes

In the 1.6 HDi engine, 1 documented fault may be the cause: additive-fed particulate filter (Eolys cerine): depleted additive and clogging.[1][2]

What to do now

Garage soon

If the handbook allows it, a 20-minute drive on a motorway at a steady speed can complete the regeneration. If the light stays on or you lose power, go to a garage.

What it means

On modern diesels it means the particulate filter is clogged with soot and has not been able to regenerate. It is common in cars used mostly for short town journeys, although it can also be caused by a sensor or by an injection or EGR fault.

Engine faults that cause it

From most to least important. Under each fault, how the symptom shows up. Check the affected years and versions on each page.

How much it can cost

Depending on the cause, repair at an independent garage ranges from €100[3][4] (additive-fed particulate filter (Eolys cerine): depleted additive and clogging) to €1,500[3][4] (additive-fed particulate filter (Eolys cerine): depleted additive and clogging), including VAT.

Most serious fault among the possible causes: Medium severity

Other common causes: DPF warning light

Besides the documented faults of the 1.6 HDi, these are the most common causes on any car according to the sources.

  • Short journeys and almost purely urban use[5][6][7][8]Common
  • Interrupted regenerations (switching the car off midway)[5][6][7]Common
  • Accumulated ash or a filter near the end of its life[6][7][9][10]Possible
  • DPF additive used up (cars with an additive system)[7][11]Possible
  • Faulty differential pressure sensor or other sensors[7][12]Possible
  • Faults that prevent regeneration: EGR, injectors or leaks[12]Possible

What to check first

  1. Note whether the light is steady or flashing and whether the car loses power or goes into limp mode: a flashing light or one that does not go out is a reason to go to the garage immediately.[7][13]
  2. If you notice signs of regeneration (a fan that keeps running after switching off, higher idle, a different exhaust sound, Start/Stop disabled), do not switch the car off: carry on for about 15 or 20 minutes on a main road.[5][13]
  3. Get onto a main road and drive for a while at 2,300-2,500 rpm in a lower gear than usual. Do not try to open or clean the filter yourself.[5]
  4. If the light stays on, ask a garage for a forced regeneration with a diagnostic scanner and have them read the fault codes to rule out sensors, EGR or injectors.[5][6][12]

Frequently asked questions

DPF warning light in the 1.6 HDi: what could it be?

In the 1.6 HDi engine, 1 documented fault may be the cause: additive-fed particulate filter (Eolys cerine): depleted additive and clogging. Each fault has its own page with the affected years and versions, the cause and how to check for it.

DPF warning light in the 1.6 HDi: is it serious?

Urgency: garage soon. If the handbook allows it, a 20-minute drive on a motorway at a steady speed can complete the regeneration. If the light stays on or you lose power, go to a garage. The most serious fault that causes it on this engine has medium severity.

DPF warning light in the 1.6 HDi: how much does it cost to fix?

It depends on the cause: at an independent garage, from €100 (additive-fed particulate filter (Eolys cerine): depleted additive and clogging) to €1,500 (additive-fed particulate filter (Eolys cerine): depleted additive and clogging), including VAT.
