PSA/Ford 1.6 HDi, e-HDi, TDCi and BlueHDi (DV6)Particulate filter (DPF/FAP)
Additive-fed particulate filter (Eolys cerine): depleted additive and clogging on the 1.6 HDi
Why this rating?
Medium severity: It can leave you stranded or get worse if ignored, without destroying the engine.
Frequency common: The DPF is one of the most cited faults of the 1.6 HDi 110 on Fiches-Auto (136 testimonies) and PSA corrected the clogging of the 8V engines with regeneration and reprogramming until July 2013.[9][10]
Symptoms
- Warning of the risk of the particulate filter clogging.[10][11]DPF warning light: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
- Warning on the on-board computer when the additive runs out.[3]Pollution control faulty: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
Why it happens
The cerium-based additive is dosed into the diesel tank at every refuel and lowers the temperature at which soot burns; when it runs out, regenerations stop being effective.[1][3][11]
Regeneration needs load and temperature: town use at low revs prevents it from completing.[2][11]
There are two types of additive (green, Eolys 176, and blue, Powerflex) that must not be mixed because they degrade the filter early.[11]
If it is not repaired: The filter clogs and may need cleaning or replacement; in addition, the post-injections of failed regenerations dilute the oil with diesel.[2][11]
Affected cars and years
All versions with a DPF: the 110 hp 16V in its Euro 4 variant, the Euro 5 8V engines, which have it as standard, and the BlueHDi, whose maintenance schedule includes checking the additive level.[4][5][6][7][8]

How much it costs to repair
Includes: From topping up the additive at a garage (€100-120) to replacing the particulate filter (about €1,500). Prices are from Spain.[1][2]
The filter itself has a limited life: Midcar puts it at about 120,000-150,000 km depending on use.
Prices in Spain, including VAT. A workshop hour costs on average €38–66 at independent garages and €77–134 at dealerships in Spain, depending on the region and the brand. How we calculate costs
How to check for it before buying a used car
- With diagnostic equipment, check the additive level and the soot load of the DPF. The official BlueHDi schedule provides for checking the additive at 100,000 km and the filter clogging at 150,000 km.[7]
- Ask when the additive was topped up: if the car is over 120,000 km without it being topped up, expect that cost.[1]
- Be wary of cars used exclusively in town with DPF warnings in the history.[2]

Regeneration and reprogramming for DPF clogging on the 1.6 HDi 8V
According to L'argus, on 8-valve 1.6 HDi engines with DPF clogging warnings, until 7/7/2013, the official service regenerated the filter and reprogrammed the engine.[10]
What owners say
Frequently asked questions
How often is the DPF additive topped up?
Normally every 80,000-120,000 km, although Diariomotor speaks of durations from 80,000 to over 200,000 km depending on the tank capacity and use.[1][3]
How much does it cost to top up?
Midcar puts it at between €100 and €120 at a garage; Diariomotor warns that with labour it easily exceeds €100 (prices in Spain).[1][3]
What happens if additives are mixed?
PSA's two types of additive (green Eolys 176 and blue Powerflex) are not interchangeable: mixing them degrades the filter prematurely.[11]

Other 1.6 HDi faults
- High severityFrequency: Very frequentTurboTurbo failure through lack of lubrication (carbon deposits and union filter)On the 16-valve 1.6 HDi/TDCi engines (2004-2011) the turbo can seize because carbon deposits from the oil clog the mesh filter in the union that feeds it. It is a serious, repeat fault: if only the turbo is replaced without cleaning the circuit, it fails again.Repair (garage): €700–€1,050
- High severityFrequency: Very frequentTimingTiming belt failure and premature wearOn the 8-valve 1.6 HDi/e-HDi 112/115 built between October 2010 and September 2011 the belt could break and leave the car stranded. PSA covered the repair and in 2014 preventively replaced the belt and crankshaft sprocket on those that had passed 120,000 km.
- Medium severityFrequency: Very frequentEmissions controlAdBlue tank and pump fault (1.6 BlueHDi)The 1.6 BlueHDi engines (2013-2019) suffer from the AdBlue tank defect of Stellantis diesels: an emissions warning appears with a countdown until starting is prevented. Replacing the tank, with the integrated pump, costs over €1,000 (price in Spain), but there is an extended warranty of up to 8 years.Repair: €1,000–€1,200
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonInjectionLeaks at the injector washers and carbon build-up in the cylinder headIt is common for the copper washers of the 1.6 HDi injectors to stop sealing: the engine blows gases, carbon forms around the injector and soot gets into the oil. It is cheap to repair, but if left it contaminates the oil and is one of the causes of turbo failure.Repair (garage): €110–€310
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonInjectionJerking and injection faults on the 1.6 e-HDi 112/115 (Continental injectors)The 112 and 115 hp 1.6 HDi/e-HDi built between late 2011 and February 2014 can jerk and turn on the engine warning light because of an internal electrical defect in their Continental injectors. PSA covered their replacement depending on age and mileage.
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonEmissions controlDirty EGR valve and EGR cooler leaksThe 1.6 HDi EGR valve gets dirty easily, especially in town use, and causes jerking and stalling at idle. On the 8V engines the EGR cooler also fails, consuming coolant with no visible leaks.
More faults with the particulate filter on other engines and cars
- High severityFrequency: Very frequentOM651EGR and particulate filter clogging, and emissions software updatesThe particulate filter and EGR clog up with short journeys, as on any diesel with these systems. In addition, Germany's KBA required software updates on several models with this engine between 2018 and 2021 because of a function that reduced EGR outside a temperature range.Repair (garage): €800–€2,500
- High severityFrequency: Common1.3 MultijetIncomplete particulate filter regenerations and oil dilutionIn heavy urban use, with short journeys that do not let the particulate filter regeneration finish, unburnt diesel passes into the sump and dilutes the oil; the level can rise on the dipstick and the oil loses its ability to lubricate. Repeated many times, it speeds up engine wear.
- High severityFrequency: Common2.0 HDiDPF clogging on additive-type systems (Eolys/cerine)The additive-type diesel particulate filter (DPF) of the 2.0 HDi clogs relatively easily on short journeys, especially on the 107/110 and 136-140 hp versions. The anti-pollution warning light comes on and, if ignored, the car loses power and may end up needing a new DPF.
- High severityFrequency: Common1.6 and 2.0 MultiJet IISaturated diesel particulate filter (DPF) from incomplete regenerationsIn urban use with short journeys, the particulate filter does not manage to complete its regeneration and becomes saturated; garages recommend a weekly motorway run to avoid it. The filter itself is among the weak points flagged in the 1.6 and 2.0 MultiJet II after a certain mileage.
- High severityFrequency: Common2.0 Ingenium diéselFuel dilution of the oil linked to particulate filter regenerationsYes: on short trips and in urban use, the Ingenium diesel's particulate filter does not always complete regeneration, and some of the diesel injected to burn off the soot ends up mixing with the engine oil, which reduces its ability to lubricate.
- High severityFrequency: CommonMZR-CDOil dilution from leaking injector seals and DPF regenerationsOn the 2.0 and 2.2 MZR-CD, injector seals that age badly and incomplete particulate filter regenerations on short journeys can let unburnt diesel into the sump, diluting the oil and leaving the engine with less lubrication.
