BMW N20 (N20B20 / N20B20A / N20B20B)Water pumpFire risk
Electric water pump failure (BMW campaign in the US over fire risk) on the BMW N20
The N20 has an electric water pump whose connector can suffer ingress of blow-by liquid; a short circuit can cause local overheating and, very rarely, a fire. BMW recalled 720,000 vehicles in the US in 2024, not including the European Union or Spain.[1]
Why this rating?
Critical severity: It can destroy the engine or gearbox, or affects safety.
Frequency occasional: BMW itself describes the short circuit and the fire as happening "in very rare cases": the recall is a preventive measure across all vehicles with this connector design, not proof that most pumps fail this way, so we do not consider it "very frequent". Even so, as a safety campaign covering more than 720,000 vehicles with the N20 or N26, it is not an isolated case.[1]
Symptoms
- Loss of coolant or a need to top up the reservoir more often than normal.[1]Coolant leak: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
- Temperature warning light or overheating if the pump stops circulating the coolant properly.[1]Overheating: other faults that cause it · As soon as possible
- Smell of burning if the short circuit in the pump connector occurs, the origin of the fire risk described by BMW.[1]Burning smell: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
Why it happens
According to BMW, liquid from the crankcase blow-by gases can seep into the electric water pump connector; if this causes a short circuit, it can generate local overheating in the connector and, in very rare cases, a vehicle fire.[1]
If it is not repaired: Beyond the fire risk described in BMW's campaign, a water pump that stops working properly causes the engine to overheat, with the consequent risk of damage if you keep driving.[1]
Affected cars and years
BMW's campaign covers vehicles with the N20 or N26 engine built between 2011 and 2019; the N26 is a variant of the N20 certified for the North American market and was not sold in Spain, so we limit the range to the N20 production relevant to this market.[1]

How much it costs to repair
Includes: Replacement of the electric water pump and, on vehicles covered by the US campaign, also the affected connector or section of wiring.[1]
The repair under the US campaign is free for covered owners; we have not found a quote in Spain for a replacement outside the campaign.
Prices in Spain, including VAT. A workshop hour costs on average €38–66 at independent garages and €77–134 at dealerships in Spain, depending on the region and the brand. How we calculate costs
How to check for it before buying a used car
- Check the coolant level and condition, and ask whether the water pump has ever been replaced.[1]

How to prevent it
- If the vehicle was bought or is used in the US and has not yet been through the campaign, check with a BMW dealer whether it is covered.[1]

Recall for short-circuit and fire risk in the electric water pump
BMW recalled 720,796 vehicles in the US with N20 or N26 engines (2011-2019) because the electric water pump connector can suffer ingress of blow-by liquid and, in very rare cases, cause a short circuit, local overheating and a fire. BMW expressly states that vehicles in the EU27+ countries, including Spain, are not affected by this campaign.[1]
What owners say
Frequently asked questions
What exactly fails in the N20's electric water pump?
According to BMW, the pump connector can suffer ingress of blow-by liquid from the crankcase, which in very rare cases can cause a short circuit, local overheating and a fire.[1]
Does this recall affect BMWs sold in Spain?
No: the campaign, from August 2024, covers around 720,800 vehicles with the N20 or N26 engine in the US; BMW expressly states that vehicles in the EU27+ countries, including Spain, are not affected.[1]
Which models does the water pump campaign include?
Among others, the BMW X1, Z4, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series and X3/X4 with the N20 or N26 engine built between 2011 and 2019, according to the statement cited by Auto Motor und Sport.[1]
What other symptoms does a water pump that is starting to fail give?
Loss of coolant, needing to top up the reservoir more often, or the temperature warning light coming on through overheating.[1]

Other BMW N20 faults
- Critical severityFrequency: CommonTimingTiming chain guide and tensioner wear (2011-2015)Yes: on BMW N20s built mainly between 2011 and 2015, the timing chain guides and tensioner wear out early; if the chain jumps teeth it can put pistons and valves out of sync and cause catastrophic damage. BMW revised the design in 2015, without a formal recall.Appears at around 129,000 km
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonLubricationOil leaks from the rocker cover gasket and the filter housingYes: with the years and heat cycles, the rocker cover gasket and the oil filter housing or cooler gasket on the N20 start to weep oil; it is not an acute defect but expected wear that is worth watching before the oil level drops too low.
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalTurboWastegate noise and plastic charge pipe breakageThe N20's single TwinScroll turbo is not, in itself, a frequent point of failure, but over the years wastegate noise or rattle and a loss of pressure can appear, and the plastic pipe that carries air from the turbo to the intercooler can crack, especially with poor maintenance or on modified engines.
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalInjectionHigh-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failureThe high-pressure pump that feeds the N20's direct injection (High Precision Injection) can fail, especially on high-mileage units, leaving the car with hard starting, jerking or, in the worst case, unable to start.

- High severityFrequency: CommonBMW M54Thermostat and water pump failureThe M54's thermostat, housing and water pump contain plastics that become brittle and fail. If left unattended, overheating can warp the aluminium cylinder head. It is advisable to replace them together.Appears at around 129,000 km
- High severityFrequency: Common1.2 / 1.4 / 1.8 i-VTECLoosening of the water pump pulley and accessory belt failureOn the Civic VIII built between 2008 and 2010, the water pump pulley can work loose and break the accessory belt, with loss of power steering and battery charging; Honda documented it as a technical notice for those production years.
- High severityFrequency: Common1.4/1.6 VTiFragile water pump (and expansion tank or heat exchanger, depending on displacement)Yes: fiches-auto.fr describes a fragile water pump in both the 1.4 VTi (with an expansion tank prone to leaks) and the 1.6 VTi (with the heat exchanger), a cooling problem that the turbocharged 1.6 THP inherits from this naturally aspirated version.
- High severityFrequency: Common1.6 THPFragile water pump and heat exchangerYes: both the naturally aspirated 1.6 VTi and the turbo 1.6 THP share, according to fiches-auto.fr, a water pump and a heat exchanger described as fragile; in the most serious cases, the resulting overheating has gone as far as damaging the cylinder head.
- High severityFrequency: Common3.0 TDI V6Failing water pump and cooling system leaksOn the 3.0 TDI the water pump can fail and, from 2010, overheat to the point of damaging the engine (the A6 C6 guide cites a service action). Owners also cite coolant leaks from hoses, the regulating valve and the cooler.
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalOM654Leak in the vacuum-operated coolant pump (overheating risk)Mercedes-Benz recalled vehicles with the OM654 and OM656 engines because the vacuum-operated coolant pump can lose its seal between the coolant circuit and the vacuum circuit, with a risk of overheating and, in the worst case, fire.
