1.8 and 2.0 Zetec-E engine: faults and reliability
Ford Zetec-E 1.8 and 2.0 16v de gasolina (familia Zeta) · Ford
The 1.8 and 2.0 litre Zetec-E engines in the Focus I are simple naturally aspirated petrol engines that, according to the sources, have no recurring serious fault. The most frequently mentioned issue is the plastic thermostat housing, which deforms and leaks coolant; in addition, Ford issued a recall in 2000 to replace the oil filler cap on 1.8 and 2.0 units built up to December 1999.[1][2][3]

1.8 Zetec-E 16v 115 hp (Focus I, 1998-2004)
1998–2004 · 115 hp
The 23 fiches-auto.fr reviews of this 1.8 mostly concern the clutch, flywheel and sensors; for the engine there are only an oil leak from the block (at about 180,000 km), a thermostat (166,000 km) and a water housing (92,000 km). Check that the thermostat housing has been replaced and, if the car is from 1999 or earlier, that the oil cap is the redesigned one.[1][2]
- With caution
2.0 Zetec-E 16v 130 hp (Focus I, 1998-2004)
1998–2004 · 130 hp
Of the 10 testimonies on the 2.0 at 130 hp on fiches-auto.fr, 3 cite the housing or the calorstat (between 100,000 and 216,000 km), 3 the fuel pump and 1 a water pump seized at 160,000 km. Gebrauchtwagenberater also points to the thermostat as a common fault of the Focus I; Exchange & Mart rates the Zetec as reliable overall.[1][2][6]
- With caution
1.6 Zetec-E 16v 90 and 95 hp (Mondeo II, 1996-2000)
1996–2000 · 90–95 hp
Fiches-auto.fr records only 2 testimonies for the 90 hp 1.6 Mondeo from 1993 to 2001, with no engine faults reported, so there is no sample to assess it. Given its age, check the maintenance history, especially the timing belt, which this engine family uses.[4][7]

1.8 Zetec-E 16v 115 hp (Mondeo II, 1996-2000)
1996–2000 · 115–116 hp
Of the 21 testimonies for the 115 hp 1.8 Mondeo (1993-2001) on fiches-auto.fr, the most repeated fault is the clutch (3). Engine cases are isolated only: one timing belt, one ignition coil at around 95,000 km, and one belt noise. The sample is small and mixes the two generations.[7]
- With caution
2.0 Zetec-E 16v 131 hp (Mondeo II, 1996-2000)
1996–2000 · 131 hp
Fiches-auto.fr records only 6 testimonies for the 130 hp 2.0 Mondeo (1993-2001), with no engine faults reported. The comments cite a fuel pump at around 140,000 km and a power steering pump at around 110,000 km. The sample is minimal and mixes the two generations.[7]
Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.
Known faults of the 1.8 and 2.0 Zetec-E
Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).
- 1Medium severityFrequency: CommonCoolingPlastic thermostat housing: coolant leaksThe plastic thermostat housing on the Focus I 1.8 and 2.0 deforms over the years and leaks coolant. Gebrauchtwagenberater flags it as a common fault, and fiches-auto.fr records it in 5 of the 33 testimonies on the 1.8 and 2.0, between about 90,000 and 216,000 km.
- 2Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalLubricationLoose oil filler cap and oil leak onto the exhaustIn 2000 Ford Focus cars were recalled because the oil filler cap could loosen and drip onto the exhaust heat shield. Gebrauchtwagenberater places it on the petrol 1.8 and 2.0 built up to December 1999; the fix was a redesigned cap.
- 3Low severityFrequency: OccasionalIntakeDirty idle control valve: unstable idleOn the petrol Focus I the idle control valve gets dirty over time and can make the idle speed fluctuate, according to Gebrauchtwagenberater. AutoCentrum.pl records a case where the same blocked valve made the engine stall at low revs (a 1.6 16v running on LPG).

What the 1.8 and 2.0 Zetec-E is
The Zeta, renamed Zetec because Lancia held the Zeta name, is a 16-valve, twin-overhead-camshaft, in-line four-cylinder family with a cast-iron block, aluminium head and multi-point fuel injection. Ford built it from 1991 to December 2004 in Bridgend (Wales), Cologne and Chihuahua (Mexico), with a timing belt, and fitted it to the Mondeo, Escort, Fiesta III and Focus, as well as several North American models.[4]
This entry covers its versions in the Ford Focus I (1998-2004) in Europe and South America, the 1.8 with 115 hp and the 2.0 with 130 hp, and the 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 of the Mondeo II (1996-2000). The same cars also used the 1.4 and 1.6 Zetec-S/SE, from the Sigma family, which have their own entry under the 1.6 Ti-VCT and are not repeated here. The diesels and the ST170 and RS turbo performance versions are not covered either.[1][5][8]
In South America the Focus I was built from 2000 in General Pacheco (Argentina). In Brazil it was offered with the 1.8 at 115 hp and the 2.0 Zetec at 130 hp, which the 2.0-litre Duratec HE replaced in 2005; the 1.6 RoCam 8-valve from that market has its own entry, the one for the 1.3 and 1.6 Endura-E and Duratec 8v.[9]
