Land Rover/Jaguar 2.2 diésel (TD4, SD4, eD4)Urgency: As soon as possible

Coolant warning light on (low level or temperature) in the 2.2 TD4 / SD4 engine: causes

In the 2.2 TD4 / SD4 engine, 1 documented fault may be the cause: coolant leak from the EGR valve cooler.[1]

What to do now

As soon as possible

Slow down, stop on level, safe ground and switch the engine off. With the engine cold, check the level in the expansion tank and look for leaks; if the level drops again or the light persists, do not keep driving and call for assistance.

What it means

It is the symbol of a thermometer over wavy lines, which warns of a problem in the cooling circuit: low fluid level or excessive temperature. The colour changes by brand (red, yellow or blue) and the seriousness of the warning depends on it.

Engine faults that cause it

From most to least important. Under each fault, how the symptom shows up. Check the affected years and versions on each page.

Other common causes: coolant light

Besides the documented faults of the 2.2 TD4 / SD4, these are the most common causes on any car according to the sources.

  • Coolant level below the minimum[3][4]Common
  • Leak in hoses, radiator, water pump or expansion tank[3][5][6]Common
  • Deteriorated cap or expansion tank[4]Possible
  • Thermostat stuck closed[3][5][7]Possible
  • Faulty water pump[3][5][7]Possible
  • Blocked radiator or faulty electric fan[3][5]Possible

What to check first

  1. As soon as it comes on, reduce your speed, avoid hard acceleration, find a level, safe place, stop and switch off the engine.[3][8]
  2. Wait for the engine to cool before opening the bonnet (RACE says about 15 minutes; Autodoc Club speaks of 30 to 45 minutes before checking or topping up). Do not open the expansion tank with the engine hot: the fluid comes out under pressure and can cause serious burns.[3][9][10]
  3. With the engine cold and the car on level ground, look at the level in the translucent reservoir: it should sit between the minimum and maximum marks.[4][9]
  4. Look for stains under the car (usually yellow or green), but remember there are leaks with no visible stain. Also watch for white smoke from the exhaust or milky coolant, signs that the fluid is entering the engine.[5][6][9][10]
