2.0 and 3.0 Ingenium gasolina engine: faults and reliability

Jaguar Land Rover Ingenium gasolina: 2.0 (P200/P250/P300) and 3.0 seis cilindros MHEV · Land Rover and Jaguar

The petrol Ingeniums (2.0 with 200 to 300 hp and the 3.0 six-cylinder with mild hybridisation) have a considerably better reputation than the diesel, but very little data has been published. We have only been able to document chain noise on some 2.0 engines, with no serious faults or campaigns.[1][2][3]

Which 2.0 and 3.0 Ingenium gasolina versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

  • With caution

The sources consulted describe it as the quietest Ingenium and document no serious faults, but there is manufacturer technical information on chain noise on some 2.0 petrols, and one workshop points to the tensioner in the first 2019 cars: listen to a cold start and ask for the history.[1][3][6]

  • With caution

It shares its block and valve timing with the P200/P250, so the same checks apply; there is little published data specific to this output.[1][2]

  • It is a recent engine and we have found no documented faults in open sources; a British guide considers it more robust than the four-cylinder, but without high-mileage data the sensible course is to keep the warranty and the maintenance history up to date.[2]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

What the 2.0 and 3.0 Ingenium gasolina is

Ingenium is the engine family that Jaguar Land Rover developed in-house. In petrol there is a 2.0 turbo four-cylinder (200, 250 and 300 hp; 320, 365 and 400 Nm) that replaced the Ford-derived 2.0 EcoBoost engines from late 2015, and since 2019 a 3.0 inline-six with 48 V mild hybridisation (340-400 hp).[4][5][7]

The 2.0 petrol powers the Evoque, Velar, Discovery Sport, Discovery, Defender and the Jaguar XE, F-Pace and E-Pace depending on version and year. The 3.0 six-cylinder is offered in the Defender, Velar, F-Pace and Discovery, as well as the large Range Rovers, which are not covered on this page.[4][5][8][9]

British workshop guides describe the petrols as the quietest Ingenium, with coil, chain or oil consumption faults at high mileage far less common and less serious than those of the diesel. These are sources from workshops and parts suppliers with a commercial interest, and we have not found an independent reliability survey that separates the petrol from the diesel. A French outlet considers the P250 the best compromise in the Evoque range with no specific faults, while Auto Express's 2023 Driver Power survey placed the Evoque 72nd out of 75 for reliability and costs, without distinguishing engines.[2][3][10][11][12]
