Which Mercedes EQC versions should you buy?
Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.
- With caution
EQC 400 4MATIC, 80 kWh, 408 hp (2019-2023)
2019–2023 · 408 hp
There are no widespread faults, but there are battery recalls (2019 and 2021) and a front differential recall (2019) that should be confirmed as closed, depending on the chassis number.[1][2][3]
Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.
Known faults of the Mercedes EQC
Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).
- 1Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalTraction batteryHigh-voltage battery: housing with insufficient corrosion protection and a poorly tightened cell moduleMercedes recalled two batches of EQCs over manufacturing defects in the battery: 1,463 cars built in 2019 with the housing exposed to corrosion and moisture, and 5 built between May and July 2021 with a loosely tightened cell module. In both cases the risk identified is fire.
- 2Critical severityFrequency: RareElectric motor and reduction gearFront axle differential gear bolt that may breakMercedes recalled the first EQCs, built up to November 2019, in 2019 because a bolt on the front axle differential gear may not meet the required strength and could break. A fragment could lock the differential and the front wheels, or damage the housing and cause an oil leak.
- 3High severityFrequency: RareElectric motor and reduction gearAbnormal electric motor noise: cases of motor unit replacementTwo of the five testimonies on the French EQC listing describe a loud electric motor noise (at around 30,000 km in one case, and a dynamo-like hum in the other) that ended in the motor being replaced. It is a very small base: no widespread defect is recorded.Repair: €8,200

What the Mercedes EQC is
The EQC was Mercedes-Benz's first series-production electric car (2019-2023). It uses an 80 kWh gross battery and two asynchronous motors, one per axle, and was built in Bremen and Beijing.[5]
In Spain it kept the name EQC 400 4MATIC (408 hp). According to Driving Electric, the battery warranty means Mercedes repairs or replaces it if its capacity falls below 70% within eight years.[4][6]
