How we work

How it works and why it fails

Differential

The differential splits drive between the two wheels of an axle and lets them turn at different speeds in corners. Four-wheel-drive cars have one per axle and often a centre differential or coupling that shares power between the axles.

What to do

A whine that changes with speed, knocks when lifting off or pressing the accelerator, or oil leaks next to the axle point to the differential. Follow the oil change intervals the manufacturer specifies for the differentials and 4x4 couplings: many failures come from skipping them.

Problems of the differential by car

Faults documented on specific cars, which occur with any engine. From most to least important.

  1. 1Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalFord RangerRear axle differential failure under heavy load and loss of tractionCampaign 22S30 covers 43,545 Rangers built from 1 September 2018 to 31 May 2019: under heavy loads, the rear axle differential can fail and leave the car without traction or lock the rear wheels.
  2. 2High severityFrequency: OccasionalJeep Cherokee KLLoss of traction from the differential or transfer caseThree Safety Gate alerts (2020, 2023 and 2026) cover the differential and transfer case assembly of the Cherokee KL built between 2014 and 2019, with a risk of suddenly losing drive traction and of the parking function failing.
  3. 3High severityFrequency: OccasionalKia Cerato IWear of bearings, synchronisers and differential in the M5CF1 and M5CF2 manual gearboxesThe used Kia Cerato I press review calls the manual gearboxes unreliable, especially the M5CF1 and M5CF2: the bearings tend to start whining at around 100,000 km and the synchronisers to wear at around 150,000 km. The M5BF2 is considered the best, with a life of around 300,000 km, although its seals tend to leak oil.Appears at around 100,000 km
  4. 4High severityFrequency: OccasionalMercedes-Benz GLA X156Rear differential noise and vibrations on the all-wheel-drive GLAAccording to fiches-auto.fr, 11 of 116 GLA reports cite the transmission or differential, with vibrations when pulling away, dull noises or loss of traction; one owner reports a failed differential at 58,000 km.
  5. 5High severityFrequency: OccasionalSuzuki S-Cross IInsufficient oil level in the rear differential of the four-wheel drive (4x4 versions)On the first S-Cross 4x4 vehicles (2013-2014), Suzuki issued a recall over a possible insufficient oil level in the rear differential: because of a fault in the factory fill, around half could be missing, and with too little oil the differential could become noisy and end up locking.
  6. 6High severityFrequency: OccasionalVolvo XC60 INoise and failure of the rear differential and the Haldex all-wheel-drive systemAccording to the testimonials collected by fiches-auto.fr, it is the most-cited non-engine fault on the all-wheel-drive XC60: bearing noise from the rear end, and differential or driveshaft replacements between roughly 100,000 and 160,000 km.
  7. 7Medium severityFrequency: CommonMercedes-Benz Clase C W202Rear differential oil leaksThe W202 differential tends to leak oil, from a slight weep to dripping that means the seals have to be replaced, according to German Wikipedia. A slight leak can be dealt with by a synthetic oil change.
  8. 8Critical severityFrequency: RareMercedes-Benz Clase G W463ACracks in the rear differential housing of the Mercedes G-Class 4x4² (2020 to 2023)Yes: Safety Gate alerts A12/00070/23 and A12/00027/24 cover G-Class 4x4² (AMG G 63 4x4²) from 2020 to 2023 for cracks in the rear differential housing, which may leak oil and break the transmission to the rear axle.
  9. 9Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalBMW X4 F26Noise, shaking and oil leaks from the rear differentialFive reports on fiches-auto.fr describe grinding noises, shaking on deceleration and oil leaks at the rear axle; in one case the differential was replaced at 55,000 km despite regular servicing.
  10. 10Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalFord Kuga IHaldex all-wheel drive pumpOn all-wheel drive first-generation Kugas, the pre-charge pump of the Haldex coupling can fail because of sludge in the oil, and the rear wheels stop receiving torque; it shows because the front wheels spin.
  11. 11Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalJaguar F-PaceDifferential and rear axle wear with bearing noisesAccording to testimonials on fiches-auto.fr, some Jaguar F-Pace owners report rear axle or differential wear, with worn bearings and grinding noises.
  12. 12Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalLand Rover Range Rover Evoque IFailures of the Haldex coupling, the transfer case and the rear differentialEvoque I owners cite failures of the Haldex coupling of the four-wheel drive (a system-not-available warning, loss of power, a failed pump), of the transfer case bearing and of the rear axle. A workshop source attributes it in part to Haldex oil not being changed in time.
  13. 13Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalMercedes-Benz CLA C117Vibrations and noises from the driveline and differential on the CLA 4Matic and AMGThe fiches-auto.fr page records 8 cases of driveline or differential problems, with vibrations, noises or jerking under acceleration, mainly on 4Matic and AMG versions.
  14. 14Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalOpel Mokka AHaldex clutch pre-charge pump failure on the Mokka 4x4Gebrauchtwagenberater warns that on the Mokka 4x4 the Haldex clutch pre-charge pump can stop working because of sludge in the oil, and the rear wheels stop receiving torque; the typical symptom is the front wheels spinning.
  15. 15Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalVolkswagen Tiguan IHaldex coupling pre-charge pump failure (4Motion)On four-wheel-drive 4Motion versions, the Haldex coupling that sends torque to the rear axle can lose effectiveness if its pre-charge pump becomes blocked with sludge from degraded oil; the car then stops sending torque to the rear wheels and the front wheels slip sooner than normal. Two European sources agree in pointing to the Haldex as something that needs special attention on this model.
  16. 16Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalVolvo XC90 IHaldex coupling or transfer case failure that leaves you without all-wheel driveAccording to a German buying guide, on the XC90 I the Haldex coupling can fail and leave the all-wheel drive inoperative; a faulty transfer case can also be the cause. It mainly affects cars built before the May 2006 facelift.
  17. 17High severityFrequency: RareMINI Countryman R60Noises and faults in the ALL4 four-wheel-drive system (driveshaft, transfer case, differential)According to the reports collected by fiches-auto.fr, ALL4 versions of the Countryman show, in specific cases, driveshaft noises and transfer case or differential faults, between about 46,000 and 168,000 km. It is a minority pattern.
  18. 18Medium severityFrequency: RareLand Rover Range Rover Sport IIRear axle noise and differential wearAccording to fiches-auto.fr, 2 Sport II reports describe rear axle noise when manoeuvring (one at 75,000 km, replaced under warranty) and differential and bearing wear with grinding noises.
  19. 19Medium severityFrequency: RareNissan Primera IIIWear of the driveshafts and differential on the Nissan PrimeraAccording to the fiches-auto.fr reports, there are 5 cases of driveshafts or differential on the Primera. It is a low figure and comes without technical detail.
  20. 20Medium severityFrequency: RareŠkoda YetiHaldex four-wheel drive: faults from unchanged oilThe Yeti's Haldex four-wheel-drive coupling can cause problems if its oil change is neglected: Gebrauchtwagenberater.de links it to front wheels spinning, and Parkers describes it as 'temperamental' if neglected, with many 4x4 Yetis already running as front-wheel drive only.
  21. 21Medium severityFrequency: RareVolvo V70 IIHaldex coupling failure in the all-wheel driveOn second-generation V70s with all-wheel drive, Gebrauchtwagenberater warns that the Haldex coupling can fail and leave the 4x4 system not working. It only affects AWD versions; the source gives no mileage or frequency.
  22. 22Medium severityFrequency: RareVolvo XC70 IIHaldex coupling failure in the Volvo XC70's all-wheel driveAccording to Gebrauchtwagenberater, the Haldex coupling on the second-generation V70 (of which the XC70 is the crossover version) can fail and leave the all-wheel drive not working. The article gives no mileage, frequency or cost.
