Porsche Taycan engine: faults and reliability

Porsche Taycan (J1): motores síncronos de imanes permanentes, 800 V and baterías de 79 a 105 kWh · Porsche

Open sources do not document faults with the electric motor or the two-speed rear gearbox; what is on record are high-voltage battery recalls (cells with a short-circuit risk, built 2018-2024) and a 2021 software update for loss of traction. Check the recalls against the chassis number.[1][2][3]

Which Porsche Taycan versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

What the Porsche Taycan is

The Taycan has been built in Stuttgart since 2019 on the J1 platform, shared with the Audi e-tron GT. In February 2024 it received a facelift with 89 and 105 kWh batteries, a new rear motor from the electric Macan and charging of up to 320 kW.[4]

Each axle carries a permanent-magnet synchronous motor. The front has a single gear ratio; the rear has a two-speed gearbox with a limited-slip differential. Until 2024 the batteries were the Performance Battery (79.2 kWh gross) and the Performance Battery Plus (93.4 kWh gross).[4]

The system runs at 800 V, with DC rapid charging of up to 270 kW before 2024 and 320 kW afterwards, and three-phase AC charging of up to 22 kW.[4]

The ADAC puts the share of electric-car faults caused by the traction battery, motor or charging at just 4.4%, compared with the 12 V battery; that statistic does not break down the Taycan. We have found no documented faults with the motor or the two-speed gearbox.[7][8]
